Red Wolf VII & Lobo II-IV problems

Post by JephYork » Fri Aug 07, 2015 1:53 pm

I've been reading about Red Wolf VII (Will Talltrees) lately, and I noticed a few hiccups in his chronology.

Right now, we've got this for his past:

M/CP 15/4-FB
{A 80 (8:5 - 16:2)-FB}
DD 258-FB
A 80 (16:3 - 17:1)-FB

And this for his mid-90s adventures:

M/CP 15/4
M/SH3 2/6
M/CP 72/4-FB
M/CP 72/4
M/CP 170/4
DS3 25
M/CP 107/4
NOM2 10

However, the A #80 FB is broken incorrectly. Instead of breaking between page 16 panels 2-3, which are only separated by months -- it needs to break between page 10 panels 1-2, between Talltrees as a boy and his super-hero origin.

M/CP #15/4's flashbacks show Talltrees fighting in Vietnam, and later working as a construction worker. They should not be placed before his boyhood in A #80 (8-10)-FB.

DD #258's flashbacks also show Talltrees fighting in Vietnam (and should be placed between his boyhood and his superhero origin). In fact, both DD #258-FB and M/CP #15/4-FB tell the same story, the origin of the Bengal, and both are written by the same author. It's possible that M/CP #15/4's Vietnam flashback contains no new information -- I'll have to compare them later.

There are other flashbacks in M/CP #15/4 that aren't accounted for properly. In that story, Red Wolf struggles to survive after a brutal fight against the Bengal, and that fight is told in flashbacks that occur immediately prior to the main story. But they're missing in our chronology.

Also, M/CP #72/4 has flashbacks to that same fight against the Bengal, revealing new information -- that Red Wolf's wolf Lobo was killed in the fight.

However, Lobo is shown alive in M/SH3 #2/6, meaning that story must occur prior to M/CP #15/4.

So, reshuffling things, we get this for his past:

{A 80 (8:5 - 10:1)-FB} - Talltrees' boyhood
DD 258-FB - Talltrees in Vietnam / Bengal origin
M/CP 15/4 (3:2-3, 4:5-5:1, 5:6, 6:7-7:2)-FB - more Talltrees in Vietnam / Bengal origin (maybe an rfb)
M/CP 15/4 (5:2)-FB - Talltrees as a construction worker
A 80 (10:2 - 17:1)-FB - Talltrees' origin as Red Wolf

...and this for his mid-90s adventures:

M/SH3 2/6 - Lobo still alive
M/CP 15/4 (1:3, 4:2)-FB - Red Wolf fights Bengal
M/CP 72/4 (2:2)-FB - Lobo killed in fight with (masked) Bengal
M/CP 15/4 (7:3-4)-FB - Bengal unmasks
M/CP 72/4 (2:5)-FB - (unmasked) Bengal decides to let Red Wolf live
M/CP 15/4 - Red Wolf survives his injuries
M/CP 72/4 - Red Wolf mourns Lobo, adopts new wolf pup

Finally, the MCP places M/CP #170/4 (published December 1994) between M/CP #72/4 (published early 1991) and DRS3 #25 (published January 1991). I see absolutely no in-story reason for this.

In fact, given that the new puppy Lobo is coming along on his missions by the time of M/CP #170/4, I think it should be moved forward to where it was published. In terms of the puppy's development, in DRS3 #25, it's left home and barely housetrained, and in NOM2 #10, it's still not trained well enough to come on missions -- in fact, Red Wolf is surprised to see that it tagged along.

Reshuffling, we get this order:

M/CP 72/4 - puppy adopted
DS3 25 - puppy left home
M/CP 107/4 - no puppy
NOM2 10 - puppy not fully trained, not supposed to be on mission
M/CP 170/4 - puppy on mission

So, putting things together, that's this for Red Wolf VII:

A 80 (8:5 - 10:1)-FB
DD 258-FB
M/CP 15/4 (3:2-3, 4:5-5:1, 5:6, 6:7-7:2)-FB
M/CP 15/4 (5:2)-FB
A 80 (10:2 - 17:1)-FB
...
M/SH3 2/6
M/CP 15/4 (1:3, 4:2)-FB
M/CP 72/4 (2:2)-FB
M/CP 15/4 (7:3-4)-FB
M/CP 72/4 (2:5)-FB
M/CP 15/4
M/CP 72/4
DS3 25
M/CP 107/4
NOM2 10
M/CP 170/4
...

And this for the Lobo puppy:

M/CP 72/4
DS3 25
NOM2 10
M/CP 170/4

Finally: the Lobo wolf seen in RW #7-9, belonging to Red Wolf/Thomas Thunderhead, is NOT the same wolf as the original Lobo (the one that bengal killed) belonging to Red Wolf/Will Talltrees. Yet we've got them conflated as the same character, "Lobo II".

They should be separated and renumbered, like this. Also, the puppy should now become Lobo IV, the Skrull should become Lobo IV imposter, and the guy from NW2 #3 should become Lobo V.
