Hulk Smash Avengers #1

Encouraged by the rapturous reception to my magnum opus 'Hulk Smash Avengers #2' I'm going to venture an opinion on #1. (Don't worry, it won't be anywhere near as long. And I don't have anything to add about #3-5.)

The issue itself says it's set between Avengers #7 and #14. In his note 'Placement of Hulk Smash Avengers #1' Paul Bourcier argued that it must occur before A 13, and used Wasp's costume design to place it between A 10 and 11.

I can add a supportive argument why it's before #11. Captain America contacts Spider-Man in ASM@ 37 after Spidey's adventure with them in A 11, and then again in Avengers Classic #11/2. And AC 11/2 ends with Cap going to join the Avengers fighting Hulk in New York. Hulk is being mind-controlled by Enchantress, which makes sense as revenge for this issue.

Giant-Man and Wasp are more specifically placed between TTA 63 and A 11. Hulk is also given that exact location. I don't know if it's a slip of the keyboard because his chronology has him more properly described as between TTA 63/2 and AC 11/2-BTS.

My only quibble is that other apps can't be inserted in between #63/2 and #64/2 because #63/2, as with most of Hulk's run of stories in TTA, ends in a (sort of) cliffhanger. In this particular case he's under military arrest after his latest Hulk episode, and gets sent for trial next issue.

Other apps *can* be inserted, but we have to find a place to split an issue.

In #64 his trial gets aborted but he's taken immediately to Astra Island to start the next adventure. And continuity is pretty tight after that as he gets taken to foreign parts.

#63 is a better option. #62 doesn't actually have a cliffhanger ending, but #63 starts with Chameleon digging himself out of some rubble as Banner checks for radioactivity after #62. That and the preceding origin of the Leader take up p1-3:6. p3:7-3:8 has Gen'l Ross telling Major Talbot to oversee Banner's next project. But it doesn't even say 'meanwhile'.

So we could put HSMASHA 1 and AC 11/2-BTS between TTA 62 p1-3:6 and p3:7-10.

A disadvantage of this is that Banner has to go on a separate Hulk-wander in this gap. The alternative is to find a time when he *is* Hulk and have him like that for an extended period. Unfortunately his Hulk-periods in TTA tend to be limited to specific situations. So I can't think of anything better.

The end result:-
