X-Factor, Infinity War and Cable's Face

Post by Michael »

There seems to be a contradiction in our placement of X-Factor and Infinity War.

We have Infinity War taking place in between X-Factor 78 and 79. However, Sleepwalker 17 takes place DURING Infinity War. Sleepwalker 17 continues from Darkhawk 19-20. We have the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants' appearance taking place after X-Factor 82. (There's a footnote in Darkhawk to the Brotherhood's appearance in X-Factor 72, which was almost certainly meant to be 82, since they don't appear in 72.)

The complicating factor in this is Cable's face. In X-Force 9, Cable's face is damaged. It doesn't get fixed until X-Force 15, but at that point Nate is separated from X-Force, and he doesn't rejoin them until X-Force 25. Cable appears in Captain America 402-407 (the Capwolf story) and his face is undamaged and he's with Shatterstar and Feral. Steve is still a werewolf at the end of issue 407 and he's restored to human form in issue 408 during a battle with his Infinity War doppleganger. So we placed Captain America 402-408 before X-Force 6-15. Now X-Factor 82 takes place after Sauron's appearance in X-Force 11.

Taking this into consideration, I think the simplest solution is this- we move X-Factor 79-81 before Infinity War, then assume that X-Force 6-11 and X-Factor 82-83 take place DURING Infinity War, immediately after Cap 402-408. I'm not sure about all the ramifications of this though- can anyone think of any problems?

BTW, I noticed that we have Warheads 4-5 placed between X-Force 10-11. I don't have those issues- is Cable's face damaged in them?

It is possible that I'm not paying enough attention but going by your explanation, and given the number of titles involved, I'm failing to see where exactly the contradiction is.

To answer your question at the end though, and this is a possible misplacement I can confirm, Cable's face is undamaged in Warheads 4-5, with a footnote in issue 5 stating that the events in said issue precede X-Force 11. Which would mean Warheads 4-5 should precede at least X-Force 9 as well since that's when Cable's face first gets damaged.

Let me try to rephrase the contradiction. We have X-Factor 79 taking place after Infinity War. However, we have Sleepwalker 17 taking place during Infinity War and after X-Factor 82. So X-Factor 79 takes place after X-Factor 82?

The bit that Michael left out is that the Brotherhood appear in Darkhawk #19-20 and Sleepwalker #17.

So, for X-Factor, the order of events currently is:

X-Factor #78 -> Infinity War -> X-Factor #79-82

For the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, it's:

X-Factor #82 -> Darkhawk #19-20/Sleepwalker #17

And for Sleepwalker, it's:

Sleepwalker #17 -> Infinity War. (Only the last 2 pages of #17 occur "during" Infinity War, the rest can occur beforehand if need be.)

So, totaling up, you get:

X-Factor #78 -> Infinity War -> X-Factor #79-82 -> Darkhawk #19-20/Sleepwalker #17 -> Infinity War. Boooooo.

X-Factor appears in most of Infinity War #1-6, so we can't really claim that issues #79-82 occur during the event.

--------

Meanwhile, over on the X-Force side of things, we currently have Cable's chronology like so:

Captain America #406-407 (undamaged face) -> X-Force #6-15 (face is damaged)

And Sauron, from the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, looks like this:

X-Force #5-11 -> X-Factor #82 -> Darkhawk #19-20/Sleepwalker #17

And Captain America's chronology looks like this:

Cap #402-408 -- a single unbroken arc. #408 features Cap and D-Man attacked by their evil doubles -- a tie-in to Infinity War #1.

So we have: Cap #402-408 -> X-Force #6-11 -> X-Factor #82 -> Darkhawk #19-20/Sleepwalker #17 -> Infinity War/Cap #408

Boooooooo.

It should be noted that Sleepwalker #17 crosses over with Infinity War #5, not #1. So it is possible that Cap #408 touches IW #1, and Sleepwalker touches IW #5, and all the rest occur during the event. Unfortunately, like I said, X-Factor appears in IW #1-6 -- so they can't be appearing in X-Factor #82 at the same time.

Maybe a gap can be opened up in IW #1. Or maybe we could reshuffle Sauron and the Brotherhood's chronology. Or ignore Cable's face in Cap #406-407.

I do not have the Sleepwalker/Darkhawk issues by hand, but can't the order for the first part be?

X-Factor 79-81 --> Captain America 402-407 --> X-Force 5-11 --> Captain America 408 --> X-Factor 82-83 --> Infinity War

Assuming:
No references to Infinity War in X-Factor 79-83
Captain America is attacked by his doppelganger (CA 408) in between the pages of Infinity War #1

Because of the Brotherhood of Mutants, X-Factor #79-83 needs to happen before Infinity War. Great.

The Brotherhood of Mutants appear in X-Force #5-11 (where Sauron is recruited, then “dies”) before X-Factor #82 (where Sauron is revived). Sweet.

Cable appears in CA 406-407 (where Cable’s with X-Force, and his face is fine) before X-Force #6 (which starts a story where Cable’s face is damaged and he leaves X-Force). That means CA 402-407, XFOR 5-15, XF 82-83 and DHAWK 19-20 all happen before Infinity War (in theory, DHAWK could happen during Infinity War). Awesome.

However, CA 408 continues from CA 407, and CA 408 is an Infinity War tie-in. Luckily, X-Force #6-15 happens pretty quickly, and X-Factor #82-83 takes an undefined amount of time to happen. If we assume it took Capwolf a day or three to get his ducks in a row between CA 407-408, then everything works out except for one thing.

Wolfsbane appears in one panel in CA 408, telling Cap (after he’s returned to normal, and after he battles his doppelganger) that she’s going back to Washington. We don’t see her “cured” in CA 408, so we can assume that she returned to X-Factor after CA 407, appeared in XF 82-83, THEN appeared in CA 408 to hang out once Capwolf is ready to cure everyone else (and himself). Cable, Shatterstar, Feral and Wolverine don't appear n CA 408.

As mentioned, Warheads features Cable (his face is fine) and X-Force, so that has to happen before X-Force #6.

X-Force Annual #1/3, though, has Cable with X-Force and his face is fine. This is also going to have to be before X-Force #6 (and the Capwolf story).

Let’s see how it falls together:

X-Force Annual #1/3 can't occur before X-Force #6, because one of the villains that Cable discusses is ... the Brotherhood. Who they don't fight until #6-9.

I say leave it where it is (between XFOR #10-11), and just pretend that Cable's uninjured face is an art error.

One more question- why is X-Force Annual 1/3 placed before X-Force 11 and 12 for Cannonball but between X-Force 10 and 11 for everyone else?
