FF in PM&IF #73

Post by JephYork » Mon Jul 25, 2016 12:41 pm

The Fantastic Four's appearance in PM&IF #73 is missing. They appear in a videotaped message, where they hire Power Man & Iron Fist to protect the Baxter Building from Rom.

It should go right before ROM #23 in all of their chronologies.

That would be true...except that the story in Rom #23 makes it clear that the "Fantastic Four" who hired Power Man and Iron Fist via that videotaped message were actually disguised Dire Wraiths setting the two heroes against their enemy. When Rom, Luke and Danny encounter the real FF in the Baxter Building at the end of Rom #23, the two groups actually talk instead of fighting and Reed ends up helping Rom leave Earth and return to Galador.

Hmm, are you sure? I haven't read Rom #23, but this synopsis on marvel.wikia.com seems to state that the FF *were* the real deal:

http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Rom_Vol_1_23
The three [Power Man, Iron Fist and Rom] battle their way through the Baxter Building’s defenses until they finally reach the hangar area where the spacecraft are stored. At that moment the Fantastic Four return and confront them but the trio is unsure whether they are the real Fantastic Four or Dire Wraiths disguised. Power Man asks Mr. Fantastic what the sum was they agreed upon for his services and when he states the correct amount he believes them to be the real team.
Doesn't the question that Luke asked Reed -- about the amount of money they agreed on -- refer to Reed's hiring them in PM/IF #73?

Well, it seems Somebody was correct when he gave me the following advice back in June:
Somebody wrote:Never, ever, EVER trust marvel.wikia.

EVER.
Clearly, whoever wrote that synopsis really misunderstood what he read in Rom #23. First, on page 4 of that story, Luke Cage recaps how he and Iron Fist had been suckered into going up against Rom by "a taped warning -- then a hologram -- supposedly from the Fantastic Four." This indicates that Cage and Fist had by that point realized that they had been duped by Dire Wraiths posing as the FF. Of course, there's a bit of a glitch in that PM&IF 73 only showed Luke and Danny receiving one message from the FF, the videotape sent to the office. The second message, the hologram showing the FF on the defensive against two 'killer aliens' who resembled Rom, only appears in Luke's flashback/recap and was probably a mistake due to a miscommunication between the two writers involved.

Second, when Luke, Danny and Rom are confronted by the Fantastic Four in the final two pages, the FF are surprised that the duo have broken into their headquarters accompanied by the same 'killer alien' that has had the whole city in hysteria. It's made very clear that they, the real FF, did not know who Rom was and they hadn't hired Power Man and Iron Fist to defend the Baxter Building.

Actually, I believe that Luke's question concerned the "certain salary" that Mr. Fantastic had paid him when he once briefly replaced the Thing. Luke had mentioned his temporary membership earlier on page 5 where a footnote referenced FF #168-170.

Just curious, do the Dire Wraiths that impersonated the FF in the videotaped message seen in PM&IF 73 also appear in ROM 23?

Also, yes, never take anything at the wiki site at face value. :)

Hmm. Thanks, Don.

However -- I thought Dire Wraiths could only shapeshift into the forms of their victims. To pose as the FF, they'd have to kill the FF. Or is that just the female Wraiths?

Of all the characters who appear in Rom #23, only two are identified as being Dire Wraiths (and only to the readers). They are only seen in their human forms as newsmen who have been orchestrating the panic about the "robot alien" in order to turn the people of NYC (and Earth) against Rom. There's no indication that either or both of them were among the four Wraiths who posed as the FF in that videotape.

Actually, all Dire Wraiths (both male and female) can assume the form of any physical being they want at will without killing them. They only have to kill their victims if they want to absorb those victims' memories as well - by feeding on their brains. Although all Dire Wraiths presumably have this ability, only the females have ever been seen using it. Apparently, male Wraiths find their race's true form repugnant and prefer to use their transitory forms instead, thereby forfeiting the use of the brain-sucking tongue that is part of the true Wraith form.
