Luke Cage, Power Man #31 & Power Man Annual 1 (1976)

Post by StrayLamb »

Apologies if this has already been hashed out somewhere - i couldn't find anything on Power Man 31..

I don't understand the placement of Power Man 31 being so far removed from issue 30, when issue 31 follows on immediately from issue 30 with no break.

In Power Man 30, the issue ends with Cage battling Piranha Jones and Cockroach Hamilton, when a canister of highly toxic gas is cracked, and the gas starts leaking out. Issue 31 begins at the exact same spot, albeit the canister has shrunk.

The Power Man chronology looks like this..

PM 26
PM 27
PM 29-FB
PM 29
PM 28
PM 30
M/TIO 13
DEF 37
DEF 38
DEF 39
PM@ 1-FB
PM@ 1
DEF 40
DEF@ 1
PM 31
FF 168
FF 169
FF 170

During the space of a few seconds, we have M/TIO 13, and the Headmen/Nebulon saga in Defenders 37-40 & DEF@ 1, plus PM@ 1, in which Cage travels to Japan.

Problem (this gets a little complicated, so bear with me): According to the Dr Strange chronology, M/TU 48-51 occurs between DEF 40 & DEF@ 1.

Iron Man's appearance in M/TU 48-51 occurs after IM 88-91, which occurs at the same time as DD 138, which in turn crosses over with GR 17-20. IM 88 specifically states the story is set in April. H2 194, which takes place immediately after DEF@ 1 shows a ripe wheat crop, which would make this mid to late Spring, so that fits.

Daimon Hellstrom's appearance in GR 17-19 occurs after M/TIO 14, which specifically occurs on New Year's Eve, and takes place after M/TIO 13.

Hulk appears in OU 2 between DEF 35 & DEF 36. Spider-Man appears in M/TU 41-51 and M/TIO 17 after OU 5.

So we end up with a combined chronology here which looks like this..

M/TIO 13
M/TIO 14 (New Year's Eve)
GR 17 (2:4-18)
GR 18-19
IM 88-91 (April)
DD 138
GR 20
DEF 35
OU 2
DEF 36-39
PM@ 1
DEF 40
OU 5
M/TU 41-46
M/TIO 17
M/TU 47-51
DEF@ 1 (Jack Norriss states the events of the Headmen/Nebula Saga have taken place over several weeks)
H2 194 (Late Spring)

In the Power Man chronology, all of this occurs between PM 30 & PM 31, which as i have mentioned above, have no break between them at all.

Shouldn't PM 31 be placed immediately after PM 30.?

I also want to mention that PM@ 1 really doesn't really belong between DEF 39 & DEF 40. I know this has been hashed out somewhere, and i believe the placement hinges on a nebulous shadowy on-screen appearance of White King Edward Buckman, which on his chronology is placed prior to UX 96.

Michel has already proposed a the White King chronology be ammended as follows http://www.chronologyproject.com/phpbb2 ... man#p33477..
WHITE KING/EDWARD "NED" BUCKMAN
X:HC 4-FB
* X 139-FB added
UX 100-FB
* {PM@ 1} moved from here
UX 96-BTS
CX 4-BTS
* UX 97 to be deleted
* {PM@ 1} moved here
CX 6/2-BTS
UX 98 (1 - 11)-BTS
CX 6 (14)
UX 98 (12 - 17)-BTS
UX 99-BTS
CX 7 (9)
CX 7/2
* UX 100-BTS to be deleted
If this amendment were to be implemented, PM@ 1 could easily be placed after FF 170, which is where the editorial note states it should be, as UX 97 fits very nicely between M/TIO 13 & M/TIO 14.

The combined chronology for these characters would then appear like this..

PM 26-27
PM 29
PM 28
PM 30-31
M/TIO 13
UX 97
M/TIO 14 (New Year's Eve)
GR 17 (2:4-18)
GR 18-19
IM 88-91 (April)
DD 138
GR 20
DEF 35
OU 2
DEF 36-40
OU 5
M/TU 41-46
M/TIO 17
M/TU 47-51
DEF@ 1 (Jack Norriss states the events of the Headmen/Nebula Saga have taken place over several weeks)
H2 194 (Late Spring)
FF 166-170
PM@ 1

Okay - so i'm replying to my own post.

I know this has been discussed before here http://www.chronologyproject.com/phpbb2 ... l+3#p37461 and here http://www.chronologyproject.com/phpbb2 ... f=2&t=5659

The entire chronology seems to have been settled, rather peremptorily i thought, having read the discussion, and the resulting current chronologies appear to based on this previous discussion.

Unfortunately, it does not work, due to one very important factor, which was not even mentioned in the previous discussion - Omegaville.
Man-Thing

First, the easiest solution to the Iron Man/Hulk/Man-Thing loop would be to move IM@ 3 earlier in Man-Thing’s chronology, as follows:...
M/PRM 28
*IM@ 3 [move to here]
H2 197
H2 198
*IM@ 3 [move from here]
FF 187-FB
...

Is there anything to prevent us from doing this? If not, let’s go for it so the general chronology can be: IM@3 > IM 88-91 > M/TU 51 (as in Iron Man’s chronology); M/TU 51 > H2 197-198 (as in Hulk’s chronology). Hulk’s last app before FF 166 can stand as H2 194, as noted in FF Index #10, and there’s no need to insert a gap in M/TU 51.
IM@ 3 cannot go before H2 197-198, the reason being that in these Hulk issues, Omegaville is an overgrown ruin. In IM@ 3, which takes place over three story-blocks, each separated by a number of weeks, Omegaville starts out as an overgrown ruin, but during the course of the Iron Man Annual, is fully reconstructed.

A lot of the problem in moving some of this stuff around, appears to be hinging on dates supplied by George Olshevsky, and with all due deference to Mr Olshevsky, some of these dates appear to be assumed, rather than based on actual dates supplied within the comics issues. I may be missing something, but i can't find any particular reason as to why IM@ 3 has to be placed immediately prior to IM 88.

Moving IM@ 3 to immediately prior to A 150, allows time for all of the weeks to occur within Iron Man's internal chronology, while placing it after H2 197-198 in Man-Thing's chronology, without the need to alter any appearances by other players, that i can see.

The resulting combined chronology would look like this..

PM 26-27
PM 29
PM 28
PM 30-31
M/TIO 13
UX 97
M/TIO 14 (New Year's Eve)
GR 17 (2:4-18)
GR 18-19
IM 88-91 (April)
DD 138
GR 20
DEF 35
OU 2
DEF 36-40
OU 5
M/TU 41-46
M/TIO 17
M/TU 47-51
DEF@ 1 (Jack Norriss states the events of the Headmen/Nebula Saga have taken place over several weeks)
H2 194 (Late Spring)
FF 166-170 ~ H2 195-198 (Omegaville in ruins)
PM@ 1 (Summer) ~ FF@ 11 ~ H2@ 5 ~ IM@ 3 (takes place over several weeks, during which Omegaville is rebuilt)

BTW, while we're on the subject of Omega, could someone please explain to me why Nitro's appearance in OU 8 is placed after CM 54, when CM 54 explicitly takes place after OU 8?

I've also discovered that PM 32-35 take place in April.. so the Luke Cage chronology for this era is completely screwed up..

After a careful reading of the issues, i would propse the following changes be made..

PM 26
PM 27
PM 29-FB
PM 29
PM 28
PM 30
*PM 31 (move to here)
M/TIO 13
DEF 37
DEF 38
DEF 39
*PM@ 1-FB (move from here)
*PM@ 1 (move from here)
*PM 32 (move to here, during the week gap)
DEF 40
*PM 33 (move to here)
*PM 34 (move to here)
*PM 35 (move to here)
DEF@ 1
*PM 31 (move from here)
FF 168
FF 169
FF 170
*PM@ 1-FB (move to here)
*PM@ 1 (move to here)
*PM 32 (move from here)
*PM 33 (move from here)
*PM 34 (move from here)
*PM 35 (move from here)
DEF 42
DEF 43
DEF 44
DEF 45
DEF 46

this jibes well with all of the internal dates throughout the following combined issues..

PM 26-27
PM 29
PM 28
PM 30-31
M/TIO 13
UX 97
M/TIO 14 (New Year's Eve)
GR 17 (2:4-18)
GR 18-19
IM 88-91 (April)
DD 138
GR 20
DEF 35
OU 2
DEF 36-39
PM 32 (during the one week gap between DEF 39 & DEF 40)
DEF 40
PM 33-35 (April)
OU 5
M/TU 41-46
M/TIO 17
M/TU 47-51
DEF@ 1 (Jack Norriss states the events of the Headmen/Nebula Saga have taken place over several weeks)
H2 194 (Late Spring)
H2 195-198 (Omegaville in ruins)
FF 166-170
FF@ 11 (takes place a few days after FF 170)
M/TIO@ 1 (takes place immediately after FF@ 11
M/TIO 20 (takes place immediately after M/TIO@ 1)
PM@ 1 (Summer - specifically June)
H2@ 5 (Hulk has had enough time to reach Colorado)
IM@ 3 (takes place over several weeks, during which time Omegaville is rebuilt)
