More early '80s Spider-Man corrections

Post by tlynch »

Hi all,

The current chronology for Spider-Man has the following:
PPTSS 76
PPTSS 77
ASM 238
ASM 239
PPTSS 78
PPTSS 79
M/FAN 6
KZ3 21
KZ3 22
KZ3 23
KZ3 24
KZ3 25
KZ3 26
M/TU 127
M/TU 128
Some of that has some contradictions, so far as I can tell.

1) In PPTSS 77, Doc Ock says that he'll be back "in 24 hours" to finish Spider-Man and the Black Cat off, and most of issue 78 is spent on Peter saying goodbyes of sorts to everyone he knows. As such, I have difficulty seeing the Hobgoblin introduction of ASM 238-239 fitting there, especially since 238 itself takes at least a few days.

2) In PPTSS 78, when Peter is at the Daily Bugle, he references a lot of pictures he's taken recently, including Vermin. His battle with Vermin is in M/TU 128, so that must be occurring prior to PPTSS 78.

There's a break point between PPTSS 76 and 77 of uncertain duration, and I think that's a good place to put a lot of these stories. All of the references to Black Cat being in the hospital and Doc Ock being on the loose are still valid there, and there isn't yet the 24-hour deadline imposed by Ock.

That means we'd have PPTSS 76
ASM 238
ASM 239
M/TU 127
M/TU 128
PPTSS 77

PPTSS 78
PPTSS 79
M/FAN 6
KZ3 21
KZ3 22
KZ3 23
KZ3 24
KZ3 25
KZ3 26

I don't own the issues of Marvel Fanfare or Ka-Zar in question, so I don't know how those would fit.

Thoughts? Ideas?

I agree with the need to move MTU 127+128 because of the Vermin photos (and the appearances by Captain America in both issues). As far as moving PPTSS 77, I don't think it should be moved based on Doc Ock's quote. I've found that temporal references like that are so commonly problematic that they can be easily explained away if not outright ignored. (My favorite example of this comes from Spidey's Web of Doom mini that is supposed to take place over 6! weeks. :hmmm: )

The Fanfare and Kazar issues work just fine.

I got a chance to take a better look over this stretch of Spidey comics, so let me take another stab at this. I am now going to agree w/ tlynch's re-arrangement of PPTSS 77. However, I would also move MTU 127 even earlier (to right after ASM 237). This issue has an appearance from Cap that is referenced in MTU 128. The only other useful continuity clue in it has Aunt May throwing a x-mas party at her boarding house (which was started in MTU 124). Peter begins the issue in a rather cheerful mood and there is no mention made of Felicia. For that reason it does not fit well between PPTSS 76+78 or within the confines of the "24 hour" problem.

Since we have to move the 2 MTU issues I would suggest the following changes that would work best story-wise:

Spidey
ASM 237
M/TU 127
ASM@ 16*
PPTSS 74
PPTSS 75
PPTSS 76
ASM 238
ASM 239
PPTSS 77
M/TU 128

PPTSS 78
PPTSS 79
M/FAN 6
KZ3 21
KZ3 22
KZ3 23
KZ3 24
KZ3 25
KZ3 26
ASM 240

*This new placement is based on another current thread. Putting MTU 127 in front of ASM@ 16 would also have to done for Captian America as well.
