King Richard the Lion-Hearted

Post by Paul Bourcier »

England's King Richard I appears in several MU stories but does not have an MCP entry.

Several appearances are set during the crusades:
BLACK KNIGHT COMICS #2-5
M/CP 73/3-FB
And I would guess his appearance in Timely's IDEAL, A CLASSICAL COMIC #4 is set during this time. However, I don't know the chronological order of these stories.

Richard returns from the Crusades in DEF 11, then he marries Fandral and Marian in TS 18/2-FB, so these are his last two appearances AFAIK.

Can anyone offer more information to help create a listing for Richard?

This might help

Add Marvel Fanfare #53-54, and see the notes.

The first Crusader story in Black Knight #1 was set around the time Richard's men first arrived in Palestine, so that might suggest they precede the bulk of the Fanfare story.

Thanks, Loki.

More research indicates that those BLACK KNIGHT COMICS published by Atlas in the '50s were about Sir Percy and were set in the 6th century, so Richard cannot appear there.

So, for Richard we have:
M/FAN 52
M/FAN 53
M/FAN 54
M/CP 73/3-FB
DEF 11
TS 18/2-FB

And IDEAL 4 still needs to be placed.

Prince John's chronology is:
DEF 11
TS 18/2-FB-BTS

Anything else?

The Black Knight Comics' first and last stories were about Sir Percy. However, the middle story was about el Alemain, the Crusader, and did feature King Richard in at least some of the issues (not #1, except perhaps bts).

Cool. So those Black Knight Comics issues (#2-#5) will have to go either before or after M/CP 73/3-FB, yes?

Yes. I'd suggest before, since the Crusader story in #1 was set just as Richard's forces were reaching Palestine, and the MCP story is some time into the campaign.

OK. So now the chronology is:

M/FAN 52
M/FAN 53
M/FAN 54
BK 2
BK 3
BK 4
BK 5
M/CP 73/3-FB
DEF 11
TS 18/2-FB

Any idea about IDEAL 4?

Sorry, no - the very brief blurb on Comics.org sounds like it might be a bio-comic covering the whole Crusades or even his entire history, but I wouldn't want to bank on that without having read the actual issue.
