Slightly snarky highlights for this month :
NEW SERIES
- SQUADRON SUPREME 2 #1, by Chaykin & Turini. Picks up after ULTIMATE POWER. I fear the momentum is lost here...
- MARVEL ADVENTURES SUPER HEROES #1, a team-up book featuring Spider-Man, Hulk & Iron Man... Er, isn't there already MA AVENGERS for this ?
- HULK CHRONICLES: WWH #1, a reprint book similar to CIVIL WAR CHRONICLES
NEW MINISERIES
- SECRET INVASION: FRONT LINE #1 (of 5), by Reed & Castiello. Well, there's one for each crossover these days. The only surprise is Reed writing instead of Jenkins (what's happened to him ?)
- TRUE BELIEVERS #1 (of 5), by Bates & Gulacy. A group of information activists in the MU (or, in other words, X-Treme Frontline), if I understand. Has there been any publicity on this ?
- PATSY WALKER: HELLCAT, AGENT OF THE INITIATIVE #1 (of 5), by Kathryn Immonen & David Lafuente. Er, what ? Seriously ? Some people must have loved that MCP story...
- FANTASTIC FOUR: TRUE STORY #1 (of 4), by Cornell & Dominguez. The FF explore the world of fiction. Sounds fun, crazy and timeless.
- SKRULLS VS. POWER PACK #1 (of 4), by Van Lente & Hamscher : the latest PP mini, this time tying in in theme if not in story with the current megacrossover.
- FOOLKILLER: SHORT TIME #1 (of 5), by Hurwitz & Azaceta, MAX : a followup to the recent mini, probably.
- UNIVERSAL WAR ONE #1 (of 6), by Denis Bajram : the second book from the Soleil deal, apparently.
ONESHOTS
- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY EXTRA!!, by the regular creative team (including new writer Joe Kelly), celebrates the fifth week with an anthology issue.
- X-MEN: ODD MEN OUT features two unpublished stories drawn by Dave Cockrum.
- CAPTAIN AMERICA: WHITE #0, by Loeb & Sale, has a prelude story (the origin of Bucky) for the upcoming mini + various preview materials (sketches, covers, scripts...)
- SKRULLS! ONE-SHOT, from the handbook office
- DARK TOWER: END-WORLD ALMANAC : a sort of handbook, but not from the handbook office
- newuniversal: 1959, by Gillen & Scott, apparently handpicked by Ellis, extends the newuniversal franchise while the new mini is still ongoing.
Glorified fill-in Watch :
- None, surprisingly (if you don't count SI:RUNAWAYS/YA for both RUNAWAYS and YOUNG AVENGERS...)
NOTABLE ISSUES
- SECRET INVASION continues in (deep breath) : SI #4, SI:FF #3, SI:FRONTLINE #1, SI:RUNAWAYS/YA #2, NEW AVENGERS #43, MIGHTY AVENGERS #16, AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #15, BLACK PANTHER #39 (taken over by Aaron & Palo for 3 months), CAPTAIN BRITAIN & MI:13 #3, INCREDIBLE HERCULES #119, MS. MARVEL #29, THUNDERBOLTS #122 (taken over for 4 issues by Gage & Blanco), NEW WARRIORS #14, a mini-crossover inside the crossover in X-FACTOR #33 & SHE-HULK #31, and the SKRULLS! oneshot. There's also a director's cut for SI #1.
- ASTONISHING X-MEN #25 is the debut of Ellis & Bianchi. What's more surprising is the mention of "a SFX tie-in", making it clearly the B-Book to UNCANNY X-MEN #500 (even though it ships before the latter). UNCANNY itself gets a new cowriter (Fraction) and a new art team (Land & the Dodsons) that will later do alternate arcs. The anniversary is also celebrated by MARVEL SPOTLIGHT & a poster book. Meanwhile, the other X-Books seem to have abandonned the "Divided We Stand" branding, even though half of them are still in their opening arcs.
- Swierczynsk & Foreman take over IMMORTAL IRON FIST #17
- It's a good a place as any to mention that the Knaufs have retroactively left IRON MAN: DIRECTOR OF S.H.I.E.L.D. two months ago with #29, and that Stuart Moore has taken over since then.
GONE MISSING THIS MONTH :
- RUNAWAYS, still bidding its time during the crossover
- THE TWELVE : skip month at mid-point ?
- MARVEL ADVENTURES IRON MAN has been missing two months in a row, so I guess it's cancelled. A shame : it was one of the better ones.
NOTABLE COLLECTIONS
- Marvel Masterworks : Golden Age Captain America v2, and Defenders v1
- Essentials : FF v7, Defenders v4, and a new version of Doctor Strange v1
- INVADERS CLASSIC v2.
- The first three of the recent batch of POWER PACK minis somehow get a HC.
- PUNISHER: WELCOME BACK, FRANK PREMIERE HC : this looks like the start of a HC collection of the whole Ennis run, starting with the 2000 maxiseries
- X-MEN: LONGSHOT PREMIERE HC : it's about time !
- MINI MARVELS: ROCK, PAPER, SCISSORS DIGEST : I have no idea whether this collects the old or the new strips (maybe both). For some reason, this will have a limited print run (as opposed to what, exactly ?)
- COUNTER X VOL. 1 TPB, collecting the first two X-FORCE arcs of that relaunch (the worst part of it, then), probably to celebrate Ellis' return to the X-franchise.
- For some reason, there is a reprint of the CAPTAIN AMERICA: OPERATION REBIRTH TPB (the pre-Heroes Reborn Waid/Garney run, if I'm not mistaken)
So, what caught up your eye this time ?
