X-MEN FOREVER #1 (what if...? Claremont never left the X-Men?)
Is this not supposed to be canonical?

A thousand times no!

It's not even a case of a clear divergence point - it's like Earth X in that it Claremont has licence to change anything. In this case, he's claimed that he's picking up after X 3, but he's also ignoring stuff established later (retcons like Deadly Genesis, Gambit's real name & background, etc) and he's even playing fast and loose with his own rule - e.g., he's referred to "the New Mutants" in interviews, but they were X-Force by the point he's nominally picking up at.

Yes, exactly. Claremont could literally change anything he liked about this universe -- revealing that Prof. X has been a Skrull since UX #1, etc. Best to treat it as Earth-X-like; divergent from the very beginning of creation.

Four for me:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #597
FANTASTIC FOUR #567
UNCANNY X-MEN #511
X-MEN FOREVER #1

Pretty psyched for "X-Men Forever" - Claremont's "Uncanny" run (especially 1986-1991) will always be a sacred item to me. I'm not totally convinced there's more there for him to explore, but I'm all for giving him a shot.

The appeal of Forever comes from it being freed of commercial shackles. Here's a chance for Claremont to pick a direction for the characters with no regard for preserving them as money-making properties. It's going to be interesting regardless of the quality, i think. (And for the record - after reading the issue, loved it.)

Wasn't that the idea behind giving him Exiles/New Exiles?

A book he proceeded to drive so far into the ground it came out in Australia.

Hey, I live in Australia - it's a great place to be!

I didn't read Exiles, so I don't know how it ended up. But I've enjoyed the majority of Claremont's work on the core x-books since he returned. This is a 'core x-book' of a sort, and I loved the first issue - I really hope this book goes the distance.
