PANINI COMICS!

Hi everybody it's me again bothering you!

Seriously, do you have any information regarding the Marvel UK comics AFTER Italian brand Panini acquired it in 1994 or so?

I'm sure that the series Spectacular Spider-Man Adventures, for instance, contains some original material, but... does some of you know if ALL the issues contain such material?

Is this material in Earth-616 continuity? And so, should it be included in the MCP? Regarding Spectacular Spider-Man Adventures, I don't think so, since it is aimed to a younger audience...

Thanks and bye

It's not Earth-616 ... I think some Handbook entries have actually made reference to that universe, though.

I'd be interested in learning which issues of what titles have new stories, too. There's not a lot of information on non-US original stories on the web, and that's a shame.

AFAIK Spectacular Spider-man and Marvel Heroes are the 2 that have original stories, and I think both have been that way since they started. They're aimed at a younger market than the US reprint titles I guess, and there's also an even younger comic called Spidey & Friends, but I've never bought or read it so I couldn't tell you if there's anything much in the way of stories in it.
As far as the stories go, a friend of mine asked one of the artists a while back and they basically try and keep the stories free of any references to anything in-continuity, that way they would pretty much fit anywhere, or nowhere if you prefer.

Uhmmmm that means they don't have to be analysed for the MCP, either.

Thanks!

Ehi, Davide, all of these UK series (Spectacular Spider-Man, Marvel Heroes and Spidey & Friends) are published in Italy, by Panini Comics. You can see by yourself that are clearly out of continuity.

(Insomma, sono pubblicate tutte e tre in Italia dalla Panini, e guardandole un attimo si capisce che sono chiaramente fuori continuity).

Davide,

I personaly like to collect the obscure by American standards (hard to get) and would be very interested to know what issues from Panini have new material and which characters are contained within. Its always nice to have an insider give us the scoop.

Spectacular Spider-Man is all new material, from at least #100 (they are past #200 now). The short lived Rampage title (not to be confused with the late 70s/early 80s Rampage Monthly) also had new material, as does the current Marvel Superheroes title (likewise not to be confused with the late 70s/early 80s MSH monthly). There's also a young readers title, Spider-Man and Friends,

also new material (and not disimilar in style, though pre-dating, the cartoon Super Hero Squad). None of it is 616, but see below.

Should have asked Jeph - I can put together a reasonably comprehensive list.

With regards to the Handbook entry that referenced the Spectacular Spider-Man comic (Earth-9411). One of the SSM stories had the Fury return to Earth and fight Captain Britain and Spider-Man, both of whom were sent by Merlin to stop the cybiote. The story ended with CB trapping himself and the Fury between realities. Unfortunately, the writer stated explicitly that the battle took place on Earth-616, which the Fury had "returned" to; I ran into the writer at a UK convention and briefly discussed this, and it turns out he didn't realise the significance of the numbering - he remembered it from Moore-era CB stories, but didn't know it is the reality of the mainstream Marvel comics. The continuity problem posed by having the battle taking place on 616 but CB ending up lost between realities and the Fury being merged into Mad Jim Jaspers (see X-Men: Die by the Sword) was resolved thusly
(a) Though other versions of the Fury presumably could exist in the multiverse, only 2 versions could have "returned" to 616. The 238 one (merged with Jaspers, so it couldn't be that one), and the facsimile that Jamie Braddock created to fight the X-Men, last seen vanishing into a singularity. Hence it was the latter - and since that was, at least to begin with, a weaker version, it also explained why CB and Spidey weren't toasted within seconds of engaging it in battle.
(b) The battle explicitly took place on 616, but the Spidey and CB seen were the Spectacular Spider-Man comic versions (they recalled their previous meeting, and the SSM Captain Britain wore the classic Alan Davis costume but still wore the Amulet of Right, neither of which was true of 616 CB by this point). Merlin, presumably unwilling to risk 616 CB, had not only teleported Spidey from Manhattan to Edinburgh (where the fight was taking place), but from 9411's Manhattan to 616's Edinburgh.

There's been a sequel since, where CB-9411 got home with the Fury following close behind.

Are all of Panini Comics produced in the various countries. If I was to look to England to find these would the same titles be available or are they exclusive to Italy?

They produce different titles for different countries. Some projects get reprinted in multiple countries (most of the recent GN for instance - Wolverine: Saudade, Daredevil: DoA, etc), but the regular titles are different for the different countries. The ones I mentioned in my previous post are all UK titles, written and drawn by UK creators, and published by the UK offices of Panini. I'm not sure if they are printed in the UK (I suspect they may be), but in those particular cases all the main Italian office is really responsible for is giving the UK office permission / leeway to produce them.

Well, thank you :D

But... does anyone have the complete list of everything published by Marvel UK / Panini Comics since the early 80s (I already know which were the 70s titles)?
Or at least a list of all the stories that were not US reprints??

That would be very useful...
