SPIDER-MAN vs. VAMPIRES #1 (December 2010)
By Kevin Grevioux & Roberto Castro

APPEARANCES:
Spider-Man, Blade, Negus (Solomon, 2,000 year old vampire, also in fb), Dr. Silas (Negus’ drug manufacturer), Mr. Chin (Negus’ drug distributor), Dracula (in fb), vampires

FLASHBACKS:
Two thousand years ago, Negus becomes a powerful vampire in the Sudan. At some point, Negus battles Dracula and defeats him.
SYNOPSIS:
Spider-Man stumbles across a vampire fight club. He discovers they’re holding Blade captive, but Negus (in charge of the club) captured Spider-Man, turns him into a vampire and makes him fight Blade. Spider-Man snaps out of it and escapes with Blade, reviving him later at Empire State University. Blade explains that Negus has been making a drug that temporarily turns people into vampires. Spider-Man and Blade return and defeat Negus and destroy his drug operation.

NOTE:
This was originally a digital comic in three parts, also called “Spider-Man vs. Vampires,” also from 2010.

The story takes place “years ago.” Spider-Man is working on a research paper at Empire State University, and he’s already met Blade. Spider-Man’s in his classic red & blue suit, and Blade is in his movie-inspired look. Also, Spider-Man called the Avengers.

Peter Parker working on a research paper at ESU could be pretty much any time from 1988 to 1998, really. The Blade movie came out in 1998, so we’re probably looking at the tail end of that window. Since the Avengers have to be around, this would be after Heroes Return, and likely after the first arc of Avengers v3. Of course, around that time Spider-Man was a fugitive and bouncing around between four identities, so sometime after that wraps up would be good.

As for Blade, I’m noticing an oddity. M/TU2 7 (classic appearance) was published the same month as BLD (classic appearance) (both March 1998), and yet M/TU2 7 is currently placed after BLD2 1-3 (movie appearance) (Nov 1998 - Jan 1999), almost a year out of publication order. That needs to be fixed.

The Blade movie hit theaters in August 1998, so around comics with an indicia date of October 1998. October 1998-dated comics was the story where Spider-Man retired right before his books were relaunched, so it looks like we’re looking at a pretty small window, as it turns out. Right before the “Gathering of the Five” story for Spider-Man, and between the Blade one-shot and the Blade Strange Tales imprint mini for Blade.

Dracula started spending time away from his castle, often decades at a time, in TOD 52-FB. After that seems like a pretty safe bet for him for the flashback.
