Deadpool: Back in Black #1-5

Post by Col_Fury »

Thanks for the heads-up, Jason!

DEADPOOL: BACK IN BLACK #1 (December 2016)
By Cullen Bunn & Salva Espin

APPEARANCES:
Spider-Man, Venom Symbiote, Killer Thrill, Guzz, Coldwar, Machine Man, Dansen Macabre, Cult of Kali (inc the Mech-Lords of Hell), bystanders (inc a janitor), Collector (bts, revealed in #5)

FLASHBACK:
Deadpool participates in the Beyonder’s contest, meets the Venom Symbiote and accidentally shows Spider-Man where to find it (repeats DPSECSECWARS 1-4, no new information).
SYNOPIS:
Spider-Man uses church bells to separate himself from the Venom Symbiote (repeats WOSM 1, no new information). The Symbiote later hides in a church and eventually befriends a janitor, but when alien bounty hunters (Killer Thrill, Guzz & Coldwar) come looking for it the janitor dies from a heart attack. Meanwhile, Deadpool and Machine Man fight the Cult of Kali, but Machine Man has been enchanted by Dansen Macabre (Deadpool dug out his own eyes so he wouldn’t be affected). The Symbiote finds Deadpool and merges with him (or whatever it’s called); Deadpool easily defeats the Cult and traps Dansen Macabre. Feeling empowered, Deadpool patrols the city.

NOTE:
The bounty hunters keep calling the Symbiote a “Klyntar,” which is the species name for those Symbiotes (“Klyntar” was revealed in Bendis’ GOTG run a while back).

Killer Thrill first appeared in Drax #6 (2016). Obviously, this occurs before that. For one thing, she has two normal arms here and in Drax (in the current day), she has one replacement robot arm. This has to happen before she loses an arm, right?

Spider-Man’s dialogue on the first two pages is copied from WOSM 1. The part where he stumbles out of the church nearly naked is new, though.

DEADPOOL: BACK IN BLACK #2 (December 2016)
By Cullen Bunn & Salva Espin

APPEARANCES:
Deadpool, Venom Symbiote, Black Cat, Killer Thrill, Guzz, Coldwar, Power Pack: Gee, Lightspeed, Energizer, Mass Master; Obnoxio the Clown (!), some Snarks, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Killer Thrill continues to watch Deadpool. Meanwhile, Power Pack attends a birthday party at Pizza Time Funfare (think Chucky Cheese, or Showbiz Pizza if you’re old like me) where Obnoxio the Clown performs until some Snarks attack, looking for Power Pack. Deadpool arrives, is star struck by Obnoxio, and eventually eats the Snarks (off-panel of course, this takes place in the ‘80s when the comics code wouldn’t let you see those kinds of awful things). Deadpool leaves, and is approached by Black Cat, who thinks he’s Spider-Man.

NOTE:
This would be Earth-616’s Obnoxio the Clown; he even has a history here. Deadpool used to watch Obnoxio’s Saturday morning kids show until he had a mental breakdown on TV. Now Obnoxio owes alimony (to She-Man-Thing, according to an editor’s note) and begrudgingly performs at kids’ birthday parties. Also, he doesn’t like to make balloon animals. Also also, he prefers Pabst Blue Ribbon.

DEADPOOL: BACK IN BLACK #3 (December 2016)
By Cullen Bunn & Salva Espin

APPEARANCES:
Deadpool, Venom Symbiote, Black Cat, White Rabbit, Killer Thrill, Guzz, Coldwar, Kraven the Hunter, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Still thinking that Deadpool is Spider-Man, Black Cat tries to get frisky. They’re distracted by the White Rabbit and get into a fight. Killer Thrill arrives and kills all of the White Rabbit’s virus-bunnies. Deadpool eats one of Killer Thrill’s goons (Coldwar). Black Cat passes out so Deadpool leaves her on a roof, unaware Krvaen is stalking him…

NOTE:
Remember when Marvel comics would advertise in the margin borders of the pages? “Something happens in this week’s Dazzler!,” “story continued after next page,” stuff like that? They have fun with that in this mini; here’s one: “Try not to think about how old you’ll be in 31 years.”

If you like that sort of thing (fun in the margins, not contemplating your own mortality), you should be reading Squirrel Girl.

DEADPOOL: BACK IN BLACK #4 (January 2017)
By Cullen Bunn & Salva Espin

APPEARANCES:
Deadpool, Venom Symbiote, Kraven the Hunter, Killer Thrill, Guzz, Spider-Man, lions & pigeons

FLASHBACK:
Secret Wars! (again, repeats DPSECSECWARS, no new information). Deadpool parties with Cap, Iron Man (in a tux) & Hulk. Deadpool rides a mechanical bull. Deadpool goes on a date with She-Man-Thing. Deadpool (wearing the Venom Symbiote) meets Planet Terry (see NOTE).
SYNOPSIS:
Kraven fights Deadpool, thinking he’s Spider-Man. After Deadpool is poisoned the Symbiote takes over and beats up Kraven; still upset that Spider-Man abandoned him, the Symbiote tells Kraven that he should kill Spider-Man. Deadpool passes out on a rooftop and is pooped on by pigeons. The bounty hunters decide to hunt the Symbiote another way, by attacking its previous host: Spider-Man!

NOTE:
Over the flashbacks, Deadpool mentions the poison is making him hallucinate. Also, the narrator’s caption suggest that some of these memories may not be Deadpool’s, but rather maybe the Symbiote’s. Deadpool hasn’t had the Venom Symbiote for a full day yet, and hasn’t had a chance to meet Planet Terry, so we know that at least that one’s not real. We’ll chalk these up to “hallucinating.” Also, She-Man-Thing is kind of cute in a sun dress.

Also, Kraven doesn’t wear underwear under his loincloth. “Impressive,” says Deadpool.

DEADPOOL: BACK IN BLACK #5 (February 2017)
By Cullen Bunn & Salva Espin

APPEARANCES:
Deadpool, Venom Symbiote, Spider-Man, Killer Thrill, Guzz, Collector, Eddie Brock

SYNOPSIS:
Killer Thrill attacks Spider-Man; his pain is sensed by the Symbiote. Deadpool attacks Killer Thrill and he eventually eats one of her arms. She escapes, the Symbiote leaves and Spider-Man spent the whole time passed out on the floor due to blood loss. Killer Thrill reports back to the Collector to say she didn’t get the Symbiote for his collection. Deadpool follows the Symbiote to a church and wonders what to do about it. Eddie Brock wanders by (preparing to kill himself), so Deadpool suggests he goes to church.

NOTE:
Oh, well, there you go. This is where Killer Thrill loses her arm.

Spider-Man’s in his cloth version of the black suit here (and last issue). Also, Deadpool didn’t even have the Symbiote for a full day.

Time passes in issue #1, so part of it happens right after WOSM 1, and the rest happens sometime later (and before WOSM 18, where Eddie pushes Peter Parker onto the subway tracks, and of course before WOSM 31-32 (Kraven’s Last Hunt). Also, this would have to be around the time Eddie is suicidal, so at least after the Sin Eater story (PPSSM 107-110).

PPSSM 110 is in the middle of SECWARSII. Thanks to DPTU (the one-shot, not the series that counted backwards), we know that Deadpool was active during SECWARSII. So, after that for Deadpool, and before the “1987” flashback in DPV.XFOR 1 (because we’re looking at comics from the end of 1986, naturally).

Thanks to Code of Honor #4, we know the Symbiote finds Eddie during SECWARSII (they’re together when the Beyonder is still around). I guess that means (Code of Honor, not this mini) that Eddie spent a lot less time deciding to kill himself (before the Symbiote) and a lot more time deciding to go after Spider-Man (after the Symbiote). Huh.

So we’re looking at between PPSSM 110-111. PPSSM happens on Christmas, and PP 20 is the day before Christmas. Spider-Man appears in PP 21. Luckily, there’s a break for the Power kids between PP 20-21.

In the publicity leading up to the Star Comics launch (i'm pretty sure in Marvel Age, maybe in other places too), Marvel was quite clear that the various Star comics were not set in the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616) -- except for one, which they were not naming yet. And they never did name that comic, but I was always pretty sure it was Planet Terry.

I gather that recent handbooks have claimed that both Wally the Wizard and Meet Misty were Earth-616, but here's proof in an actual comic book -- it was Planet Terry after all!

The X-Babies met some of the Star Comics characters (Wally the Wizard and some others) in X-Babies #4 from 2010; that's what the handbooks were talking about.

Also, an adult Planet Terry recently appeared in Drax #7-12 from 2016. Track 'em down! :)
