CAPTAIN AMERICA: RED WHITE & BLUE (September 2002)
By Paul Dini & Alex Ross
A recap of Cap’s origin; no new information. Looks great!
2nd Story:
By Tony Salmons
APPEARANCES:
Captain America, Red Skull, Allied soldiers, dirty Nazis
SYNOPSIS:
Captain America briefly joins (well, accompanies I guess) the Big Red One (1st Infantry Division) to battle the Red Skull and his scummy Nazis in the Mediterranean. Cap commandeers the Red Skull’s Ragnarok Ray and vaporizes entire squads of Nazis. Red Skull escapes in a mini personal helicopter and Cap chases after on a motorcycle.
NOTE:
Go get ‘em, Cap!
At the earliest, this would be the middle of ’43 given the 1st Infantry Division being in the Mediterranean. Cap has his triangle shield here, which he had stopped using long ago by this point, but maybe his circle shield was getting repainted or something.
3rd Story:
By Bruce Jones & Richard Piers-Rayner
APPEARANCES:
Captain America (in film reels), US soldiers
SYNOPSIS:
A guy taking movies to the war front crashes on a small island. He spends his time watching Captain America film reels which promote fighting the Japanese and running a tight ship.
4th Story:
By Darko Macan & Bruce Timm
APPEARANCES:
Captain America, Baron Leonhardt von Konigsblut (a werewolf)
SYNOPSIS:
1945: Cap helps find a lost German girl and ends up fighting a werewolf, who helps Cap save the girl from falling down a well. They take a break to return the girl to her father, then continue the fight.
5th Story:
By Paul Pope & Nick Bertozzi
APPEARANCES:
Red Skull, Hitler Youth (Uli named), a professor, a cook
SYNOPSIS:
A boy is caught reading Captain America comics when he’s supposed to be learning how ~great~ the master race is. He’s brought to the headmaster, the Red Skull, who tells the boy to shoot whoever is sneaking the comics to the kids. Eventually, the kid kills the cook (a nice, kind man). Red Skull is pleased; Uli will make a fine Nazi.
6th Story:
By Peter Kuper
APPEARANCES:
Captain America
SYNOPSIS:
Cap wakes from a nightmare where he removes his mask and is Hitler underneath. He then smooches with the Red Skull. No more rarebit cheese K-rations for Cap!
7th Story:
By Jeff Jensen & Frank Quitely
APPEARANCES:
Captain America (also in fb), Wesley Richards (also in fb), contemptuous Neo-Nazis
FLASHBACK:
France, 1944: Sharp-shooter Wesley Richards is friendly with Steve Rogers at base camp, and later saves Cap’s life during a skirmish.
SYNOPSIS:
Cap visits the dying Richards, then busts up a filthy Neo-Nazi cell. “You’d think the generations since mine would know better” thinks Cap.
NOTE:
Yeah, you’d think so.
8th Story:
By Max Allen Collins & Vatche Mavlian
APPEARANCES:
Captain America (also in fb), Sen. Joseph McRooter (actually the Rd Skull), Ken Levine (Cap’s lawyer), Betty Ross
FLASHBACK:
Cap tracks down some war criminals.
SYNOPSIS:
February 1954: Captain America is called to Congress where Sen. McRooter accuses Cap of being a double agent. A recess is called and Cap meets with Betty Ross (of the FBI); she tells him a theory that the real McRooter was killed and replaced with a decoy. Cap returns to congress and asks if McRooter still wants the mask removed. When the Senator says yes, Cap rips off McRooter’s mask and revels the Senator to be the Red Skull.
NOTE:
Hmn. There was a Captain America active in 1954 (William Burnside), but that wasn’t until later in ’54. If you squint and fudge the timeline a bit this story COULD fit in somewhere, but…
9th Story:
By Yann Lepennetier & Philippe Berthet
APPEARANCES:
Captain America, Red Bra, Black Mamba
SYNOPSIS:
November 1952: Captain America has been shrunk down and inserted into someone’s brain to fix genetic sabotage. He battles Red Bra, who turns out to be Sharon Carter. Also, Back Mamba is called in for help, who mentions the Avengers. After the patient is saved, Cap asks who it is. It’s a comic artist making comics about a rich character giving money to homeless people! GASP! How will this affect the CHILDREN???!~ wonders Cap.
NOTE: Obviously, Black Mamba and the Avengers weren’t around in 1952. Also, there was no Cap active in 1952 (Mace was forced into retirement in 1950; Burnside didn’t come around until 1954). This thing ain’t canon. If this one’s not, then I’m not inclined to hammer anything else in that’s uncomfortable (like the previous story).
10th Story:
By Mark Waid, Mike Huddleston & Bill Seinkiewicz
APPEARANCES:
Captain America; Bucky, Giant-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Wasp (in repeated scenes)
SYNOPSIS:
Cap watches as Bucky’s plane explodes (repeats A 4-FB). As he’s frozen, Cap dreams of a long life that ends with cancer, but Bucky is always there seeing him through it. At the end Bucky urges Cap to hang on just a little longer (new), and then is revived by the Avengers (repeats A 4).
SYNOPSIS:
11th Story:
By Bollers & Haspiel
APPEARANCES:
Captain America, Falcon
SYNOPSIS:
Cap and Falcon watch a recently completed movie about them. They decline to endorse it, given how exploitative it is. They pretty much got Nick Fury right, though, according to Falcon.
12th Story:
By Paul D. Storrie & David Lloyd
APPEARANCES:
Captain America
SYNOPSIS:
The news reports that a reverend in Detroit has been shot after criticizing Captain America. An argument breaks out in a tavern; is Cap racist? Cap comes on the news and tells people that the shooters have been arrested, but he wanted to make a comment so people wouldn’t misinterpret his silence as condoning the assassination attempt. Cap says the nation should strive to be unified, “instead of warring factions drawing battle lines according to race or faith or class. Black and white, rice and poor, we must learn to come together, INDIVISIBLE, with liberty and justice for all.” The fight in the tavern calms down and people start talking about sports.
13th Story:
By Scott Ciencin & Pascual Ferry
APPEARANCES:
Captain America, Red Skull, Cosmic Cube
SYNOPSIS:
As Captain America fight the Cosmic Cube-wielding Red Skull, Cap begins to hallucinate a life where he’s a homeless bum besieged by children looking to steal his medication. Cap fights through the fog and continues to fight the Red Skull.
14th Story:
By Evan Dorkin
SYNOPSIS:
It’s Red Skull and Baron Zemo as Milk & Cheese! It’s funny, it’s not canon, it reminds me to go re-read some Milk & Cheese strips.
15th Story:
By Jeff Jensen & Mike Deodato
APPEARANCES:
Captain America, FBI agents, murderous activists, Klansmen
SYNOPSIS:
The FBI have alerted Captain America that activists are using his likeness to spread pamphlets catered to hate groups, but the pamphlets are poisoned and killing those who spread them. Cap arrests the activists, finds out where the next Klan rally is and burns the pamphlets. The newspapers wonder if Cap is a Klansman.
NOTE:
…why would people be surprised that Captain America is stopping people from dying? Yes, he saved some vile, disgusting, reprehensible Klansmen, but he doesn’t kill people he disagrees with (outside of wartime, of course).
