MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #9 (July 1940)
By Bill Everett, Carl Burgos & John Compton

This one’s already in the MCP, and it’s fantastic.

2nd Story:

APPEARANCES:
Angel, a scientist & his thugs, a gorilla, bystanders (Hans named)

SYNOPSIS:
The Angel is vacationing in Carlsburg when he learns the town is being harassed by vampires. He investigates and learns it’s actually a scientist experimenting with switching minds between humans and gorillas; his men are posing as vampires to snatch victims and keep the town away from the lab. Angel beats them up and destroys the machinery.

3rd Story:

APPEARANCES:
Masked Raider, Lightning (MR’s horse), Pecos Bill, Mexican Pete (also op in fb), gold miners, bandits

FLASHBACK:
Mexican Pete overhears bandits making plans.
SYNOPSIS:
Masked Raider helps some gold miners fight bandits. Also, good old reliable Mexican Pete helps out.

SYNOPSIS:
Ferret investigate attacks on a cleaning company and learns a manager is arranging the attacks so he can move up in the company.

6th Story:

Ka-Zar, Zar (his lion), N’Jaga (a leopard, enemy), Rita Grey (also in fb), Mr. Grey (also in fb), Chadak (a monkey, friend), Traja (an elephant, friend)

SYNOPSIS:
Ka-Zar and his animal friends help a lost woman return to her camp.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #10 (August 1940)

This one’s already in the MCP. It’s a one-page wrap up, and everyone’s friends again!

2nd Story:

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch, Chief Wilson, police (Tom named), Atwell (gas station owner), Riley (Atwell’s crooked private guard), gangsters (Palmer named)

SYNOPSIS:
Gangsters are trying to drive up the price of gasoline, and despite no one listening to him when he tries to point it out, the Human Torch puts a stop to that nonsense.

NOTE:
There’s a great bit where the Torch lands in front of a gangster’s speeding car; as he stands in the street, the car melts around him as it tries to run him over, splitting the car in two. Neat!

3rd Story:

Sub-Mariner, Emperor Thakorr, Dorma, Luther Robinson, Lynne Harris, Capt. Bob & his crew (Burns & Stevens named), Atlanteans

SYNOPSIS:
The Sub-Mariner’s still pissed that the Human Torch burned off his ankle wings, so he decides to go back to Atlantis while he heals. However, Emperor Thakorr’s angry that Namor didn’t teach the surface world a lesson and banishes Namor from Atlantis official business. Meanwhile, Luther Robinson puts together a war party to search for the Sub-Mariner. Later as Namor and Dorma swim around, they’re attacked by Robinson’s war party. After a big fight involving Atlantis’ Navy, the Sub-Mariner swears vengeance against his attackers.

4th Story:

SYNOPSIS:
Ghouls have been kidnapping woman so they can sacrifice them to lava. Angel frees the women, but when it appears he fell into lava, everyone gives up and leaves. He survived, though.

5th Story:

Electro, Dr. Bruno Varoz, FDR (bts), FBI agents, zombies, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Dr. Bruno Varoz, former brain surgeon, has gone insane and is creating an army of zombies. The President asks for Electro’s help, so Prof. Zog finds and blows up Varoz’s castle (and melts him in a vat of acid, just to be safe).

NOTE:
Followed by “Tiger Trail” text story.

6th Story:

Masked Raider, Lightning, Jonathan Gregg (tax collector), a murderous thief, a sheriff & his daughter (Sally)

SYNOPSIS:
The Masked Raider finds a dying tax collector and goes after his killer. No one believes him, of course, but he gets the bad guy eventually anyway.

7th Story:

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance, Doctor Watson (his monkey), “Deadline” Dawson (vo), a murdered doctor, his murdered lawyer, his family, his doctor partner, police

SYNOPSIS:
Terry Vance, boy detective, investigates two simultaneous murders and discovers the step-son did it. The police were preparing to arrest someone else. Good thing Terry Vance came along!

8th Story:
Ben Thompson

APPEARANCES:
Ka-Zar, two Scotland Yard detectives & their pilot, “London” Jack, Zar, Nono (a monkey, friend)

SYNOPSIS:
Two Scotland Yard detectives have found a murderer they’ve been looking for for years in the jungle, and arrest him. As they fly away their plane crashes. Ka-Zar helps capture the murderer and everyone goes their separate ways.

Followed by “Our Hall of Shame” one-page feature.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #11 (September 1940)

Human Torch, Chief Wilson, Dr. Stone, Reed, Frank Simmons, Skeets, Roddy, J.B. (bts), paramedics, police (Casey, Tom named), bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
The Black Plague is tearing through the slums, so a doctor convinces the Human Torch to burn down all the buildings. The slumlord owner isn’t happy that his property is being destroyed, so he pays someone $50,000 to make sure the Torch fails. The police try to arrest the Torch (their fellow officer, remember) for arson, but he convinces them all you can’t just follow orders when they’re plainly stupid orders. They’re able to quarantine the plague and burn down the buildings. The slumlord dies from the plague. The Human Torch, acting on a tip, wonders who J.B. is (I guess we’ll find out next issue).

2nd Story:

Sub-Mariner, Luther Robinson & his crew (Mr. Martin, Mickey named), Emperor Thakorr, Dorma, Lynne Harris, Atlanteans

SYNOPSIS:
The Americans are captured by the Atlanteans and Emperor Thakorr prepares to interrogate them. Sub-Mariner plots with Dorma and they come up with a way to free the Americans so they won’t be killed. Namor is pleased his plan worked so well.

3rd Story:

SYNOPSIS:
The Masked Raider solves the riddle of robberies in a town (it was some dude disguised as an old lady).

4th Story:

APPEARANCES:
Ka-Zar, Zar, Jan VanGelder, Rajah Sarput, Trajah, Mono (a monkey), Bradley, sailors

SYNOPSIS:
A big game hunter has bought some land in the jungle and starts killing animals for fun. Ka-Zar isn’t happy about it and attacks, but is shot. The hunter captures Zar and plans to kill him. Bradley (a hunter for zoos and carnivals) arrives and offers to buy Zar; when he’s turned down he just steals the lion. Ka-Zar (tended to by an elephant and monkey), now healed, gets on the boat, planning to free Zar.

5th Story:

SYNOPSIS:
Terry Vance solves the case of gangsters rigging auto races.

NOTE:

6th Story:

Angel, ghouls, a lady from ancient Greece

SYNOPSIS:
Angel continues to battle the ghouls, eventually finding himself in a hidden, underground city. He falls into a trap door and wakes up with a lady dressed in ancient Greek robes speaking Latin (apparently, Angel speaks fluent Latin). She says she’s been trapped for 4,000 years and if sunlight touches her she’ll die instantly. When they leave the room, that’s what happens. Angel uses some clothes she gave him to fly around and defeat the ghouls.

NOTE:
The lady says the fancy clothes she gave Angel once belonged to “Mercury” (she included the quotes). Was she talking about Hermes/Mercury, Makkari/Mercury, or someone else? Who knows?

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #12 (October 1940)

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch, Chief Wilson, police, J.B. (Jane Bradley, daughter of Nick Bradley who was convicted of grafting while in public office) & her syndicate (Cinalli (a lawyer) & Slim named)

SYNOPSIS:
The Human Torch tells Chief Wilson he’s going after J.B., whoever it is. Wilson says if he does he’ll get him reinstated on the police force. The Torch fin out J.B. is a woman (gasp!) and everything works out just great.

2nd Story:

APPEARANCES:
Sub-Mariner, Princess Fen, Lynne Harris, Luther Robinson, Atlanteans, Folma, Dorma, Nazi sailors, British sailors

SYNOPSIS:
Princess Fen chides Namor for letting the Americans escape, convincing him the woman wold have made a good mate. Namor tracks them down, finding they’ve been picked up by a Nazi sub. He captured Lynne, who explains they were taking them back to civilization. Namor doesn’t care and takes her back to Atlantis, where scientists begin the process of enabling her to live underwater. Luther arrives and frees her.

3rd Story:

SYNOPSIS:
Angel investigates a swamp in the South, finding some swamp folk have killed a family so they could take over the property, a result of a decades-long land dispute. They try to kill Angel and the last heir to the property (Shirley Smith), but Angel kills them first.

4th Story:

SYNOPSIS:
Terry Vance and his reporter friend stumble across a murder at a rich people dinner party in a spooky house. The secretary and the gardener were trying to steal corporate secrets, but the secretary killed the gardener to cover his tracks. Also, he used an ice gun; the ice bullets would melt, leaving no evidence. He got caught anyway.

SYNOPSIS:
The Masked Raider foils a plot for Texas to succeed from the Union.

SYNOPSIS:
Ka-Zar and Zar escape the boat once it reaches New York, but they’re captured by police. Meanwhile, Ruth Wilson hears about it on the radio; she knows who Ka-Zar is because he rescued her once.
