MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #17 (March 1941)
By Carl Burgos & Bill Everett

This Human Torch/Sub-Mariner story is already in the MCP. It’s a good one, though! Previously, the Human Torch/Sub-Mariner combo stories have always been fights. This one’s a team-up!

2nd Story:
By Steve Dahlman

This Electro story is already in the MCP.

NOTE:
Followed by “Thin Ice” text story (featuring Terry Vance).

3rd Story:
By Paul Gustavson

APPEARANCES:
Angel, Dr. Roberts, Singa, Jean Harrison, Robert Harrison, Dr. Lin, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Dr. Roberts returns from Tibet, but he’s super stressed. His daughter Jean wonder where her husband (and Roberts’ lab assistant) Bob Harrison is, but her dad won’t say. He contacts a doctor friend to try and cure Bob of werewolf-ism. After weeks of no success Roberts lets Bob out to run around the city; he’s caught by the angel and brought back to Roberts’ house (as he hoped). Angel points out Bob isn’t a real werewolf, but has been drugged to look and act like one. Singa (Roberts’ Tibetan assistant) reveals he was doing it the whole time, turns himself into a “werewolf” and Angel kills him. Everyone’s happy, but Dr. Lin (an old friend of Angel’s) asks for Angel’s help with something else. To be continued!

4th Story:
By Ray Gill & Bob Oksner

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance, Deadline Dawson, Doctor Watson, police, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Terry Vance solves the case of a bomb maker.

NOTE:
They’re starting to translate the monkey’s chittering. That’s… odd.

5th Story:
By Jack Kirby

APPEARANCES:
Vision, Vince Garone & his employees, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Ex-bootlegger Vince Garone has bought a trucking company and wants it to be the biggest and best trucking company in the country, so he starts sabotaging and killing the competition. The Vision arrives and kills Garone (by chasing him in a car and driving him off a cliff).

NOTE:
Vision, inhabitant of a different dimension (and travels through smoke), knows how to drive a convertible. I guess he earned by observing humans?

6th Story:
By Ben Thompson

APPEARANCES:
Ka-Zar, Winston & his guide, Alec Wright, Trajah

SYNOPSIS:
Winston tracks down Ka-Zar, because he was friends with Ka-Zar’s dad. Alec Wright has followed Winston, because he’s worried about losing the diamond mines that he got when Ka-Zar’s dad died. Ka-Zar discovers Alec is a bad dude when he tries to kill Ka-Zar and Winston, so Ka-Zar kills Alec. Winston asks if Ka-Zar wants to come back to England and live the rich life, but Ka-Zar likes it in the jungle and turns down the offer. Ka-Zar tells Winston to donate all of his family’s money to the British war effort to stop the Nazis.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #18 (April 1941)
By Carl Burgos

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch, Toro, Chief Ryan, US Army, the Brain (also as Human Torch) & his thugs (Shorty, Buddy, Cliff, Tom named)

SYNOPSIS:
The Human Torch robs the Army payroll and punches Toro for helping him! Later, the Torch says he’s innocent, finds Toro and investigates at the Army base. He finds an asbestos glove and takes it police HQ to get fingerprints off of it, but Toro traps him in a tube (the same one the Sub-Mariner used several issues back). The Torch says he’s trying to prove his innocence, and then they’re attacked by some thugs. Toro gives the Torch another chance and they interrogate the thugs, finding out the Brain is in charge. They then find out the Brain has been impersonating the Human Torch, beat him up and take him to police HQ, clearing the Torch’s name.

NOTE:
And finally Toro appears, which means we’re at least caught up to Human Torch Comics #2. Let’s look at some street date publication order while I’m thinking about it:

M/MC 13 (9/40), HTC 2 (9/40)
M/MC 14 (10/40), M/MC 15 (11/40), M/MC 16 (12/40), HTC 3 (12/40)
M/MC 17 (1/41), M/MC 18 (2/41), SUBC 1 (3/41), M/MC 19 (3/41), HTC 4 (3/41)
M/MC 20 (4/41), M/MC 21 (5/41), ALLWC 1 (5/41), M/MC 22 (6/41), SUBC 2 (7/41), YALLIESC 1 (7/41), HTC 5A (7/41)
M/MC 23 (7/41), ALLWC 2 (8/41), M/MC 24 (8/41), M/MC 25 (9/41), SUBC 3 (10/41), HTC 5B (10/41)
M/MC 26 (10/41), M/MC 27 (11/41), YALLIESC 2 (11/41), M/MC 28 (12/41), ALLWC 3 (12/41), SUBC 4 (1/42), HTC 6 (1/42)

In theory, HTC 2-3 should both happen between M/MC 17-18 to get everything caught up, and the HTC 4 would be between M/MC 19-20 assuming there’s no continued stories or cliffhangers. And that’s currently the way it is in the MCP (in brackets)! We’ll see if it all works.

2nd Story:
By Bill Everett

APPEARANCES:
Sub-Mariner, Luther Robinson, Lynne Harris, Thakorr, Fen, Lt. Betty Dean & her Home Guard Legionnaires (Bobby James named), Nazi soldiers, Atlanteans (Adra, Sina, Lobro named), American military

SYNOPSIS:
Sub-Mariner leaves Alaska (so, continued from last issue) and returns to France, picks up Luther and Lynne and takes them back to Atlantis (and bombs some German army outposts on the way for good measure). Luther is put to work and Lynne is made Fen’s maid. Luther assembles a radio and calls Betty Dean for help, who assembles a team of Legionnaires and three weeks later they arrive at Atlantis. They attack and escape with Luther and Lynne. The Sub-Mariner is frustrated.

NOTE:
Followed by an ad for Sub-Mariner Comics #1, on sale March 1st!

Also followed by “Young Ka-Zar” text story (featuring Ka-Zar).

3rd Story:
By Ben Thompson

APPEARANCES:
Ka-Zar, dinosaurs, giants (Bogat named next issue)

SYNOPSIS:
Ka-Zar decides to check out the mysterious Black River. He falls down a waterfall and is sucked into a cave and finds himself in a cavern filled with dinosaurs and giants. He finds out why no one has come back from the Black River; the giants are cannibals. Suddenly, a giant picks up Ka-Zar. To be continued!

4th Story:
By Ray Gill & Bob Oksner

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance & his schoolmates (Jane named), principal Dikes, Doctor Watson, Deadline Dawson, Ike & his goons

SYNOPSIS:
Terry Vance cracks the case of the stolen bikes. The janitor was stealing the bikes for a local bike shop, and they were reselling them to other kids for a better margin. Those rats!

5th Story:
By Steve Dahlman

This Electro story is already in the MCP.

6th Story:
By Jack Kirby

APPEARANCES:
Vision, “Big” Tim Skelly (corrupt political boss) & his thugs (Heinie Myers named), D.A. Tom Douglas, reporters, police, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Big Tim Skelly doesn’t like the new district attorney because he won’t let him get away with his shady business, so he frames him for murder. The Vision steps in to clean things up and tricks Skelly into killing one of his thugs. Skelly is arrested and the district attorney is released.

7th Story:
Paul Gustavson

APPEARANCES:
Angel, Dr. Lin, Cat’s Paw & her criminal network (Frank, Cartier, Hanson named)

SYNOPSIS:
Dr. Lin starts to tell the Angel what his problem is but he’s suddenly killed. Angel follows an escaping car to Park Avenue. From there he goes to a grungy grill, then underground where he finds a meeting, where he’s attacked by the Cat’s Paw, then by the Cat’s Paw’s goons. To be continued!

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #19 (May 1941)
By Carl Burgos

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch, Toro, Chief Wilson, Hag & her thugs, doctors & nurses, police, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
New York experiences a blackout, so the Human Torch and Toro investigate. They find some thugs robbing the New York Stock Exchange, but they escape while gassing the heroes. The gas extinguishes their flames and they fall to the street; Toro breaks his arm. The Torch takes him to the hospital then visits Chief Wilson, who says the Hag is responsible. Meanwhile, Toro wakes up and attacks the hospital staff, but his flame is weak, then he passes out. The Torch arrives and gives him a transfusion. The next day the Stock Market crashes, so the Torch takes care of business. He chases the Hag and her thugs to a radio station where they try to kill him, but an explosion kills them instead. Oops.

NOTE:
The doctor tells the Human Torch that Toro’s flame will never quite burn as hot as the Torch’s. Interesting!

2nd Story:
By Bill Everett

APPEARANCES:
Sub-Mariner, Betty Dean & her Home Guard Legionnaires (inc Bobby James), Luther Robinson, Lynne Harris, Thakorr, Atlanteans (Limma named), Nazi soldiers

SYNOPSIS:
Continued from last issue: the Sub-Mariner watches Betty Dean & co. fly away and goes back to Atlantis, but all his ships have been sabotaged by Luther. Namor jumps in his “Trojatross” (a flying robot Trojan Horse albatross) and catches up to Betty, but sees they’re under attack by Nazis soldiers. He helps them fight off the Nazis, then admits he’s been a jerk and shouldn’t have forced Luther into slave labor and forcibly tried to marry Lynne. He agrees with Betty that maybe he shouldn’t be fighting with anyone that comes along and focus his anger against those who deserve it. You know, like the Nazis.

NOTE:
Hey, look at that. Namor’s maturing a little bit. Keep in mind, this is the first half of 1941; he’s only 20 years old (he was born in late-ish 1920). Good for you, Namor! Keep it up. :)

Followed by “Toro Tells All” text story (featuring Toro the Flaming Torch Kid).

3rd Story:
By Ben Thompson

APPEARANCES:
Ka-Zar, Bogat, other giants, Limbos (lizard-men who live in lava), a guy and a lady

SYNOPSIS:
Ka-Zar is saved from being eaten when an earthquake makes the giant drop him. Ka-Zar then saves the giant from falling in a crevasse that opened. The giant thanks Ka-Zar and says they’ll be friends forever. They’re attacked by lizard-men but are distracted when a plane crashes nearby. Ka-Zar and Bogat save the two newcomers. Ka-Zar flies away with the pair, leaving Bogat behind to battle the lizard-men.

NOTE:
“Friends forever” my ass. Ka-Zar dumped him like a pair of dirty socks, that bum. Also, they’re in an underground cavern; where did the plane come from?

4th story:
By Ray Gill & Bob Oksner

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance & his schoolmates, Doctor Watson, Mr. Grabbit, Slug, Chief, police

SYNOPSIS:
Terry Vance and his school pals stumble across a racketeering ring, so they keep then occupied by dressing as ghosts until the police show up. Mr. Grabbit is allowed to not go to prison because he’s going to donate a park for the school. Wait, what?

5th Story:
By Steve Dahlman

This Electro story is already in the MCP.

6th Story:
By Jack Kirby, Al Avison & Al Gabriele

APPEARANCES:
Vision, Nazis (Shultz named), concentration camp prisoners (Prof. Bauer named)

SYNOPSIS:
The Vision arrives at a concentration camp in occupied France and frees Prof. Bauer, who was imprisoned and set to be executed for writing about truth and freedom. When the Vision frees the professor, a riot breaks out among the prisoners at the camp.

NOTE:
The Vision drives a truck and flies a plane in this story. He’s learning quick!

7th Story:
By Paul Gustavson

APPEARANCES:
Angel, Cat’s Paw & her criminal network, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
The Angel escapes, but the Cat’s Paw is still on the loose. She assassinates several leading industrialists that night. He deduces that she’ll be at a masquerade fundraiser tonight and finds her there, but she escapes. To be continued!

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #20 (June 1941)
By Carl Burgos

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch (also disguised as Mayor La Guardia), Toro, Mayor La Guardia, Hawk Rivers & his thugs, US Army, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Someone is setting fires in New York, holding the city ransom for ten million dollars! The Human Torch confers with the mayor and comes up with a plan after they figure out escaped convict Hawk Rivers is behind the shenanigans.

NOTE:
The Torch gets SO ANGRY that someone is setting arson bombs to get ransom money that his flame burns so hot, falling buildings melt around him as they fall. He also “lets loose a tidal wave of flame” that vaporizes falling skyscrapers in mid-air (saving pedestrians below). Neat!

Also, no cliffhangers, so everything works out just fine (scroll up to M/MC 18’s first story note if you forgot what I’m talking about).

2nd Story:
By Bill Everett

APPEARANCES:
Sub-Mariner, Betty Dean, Danny Dougherty & his mother, “Killer” Casey and his management, bystaders

SYNOPSIS:
Having curing his people of the poison gas inflicted on them by the Nazis (see SUBC 1), the Sub-Mariner returns the radium he stole to do so (RADIUM! The wonder substance!). He meets up with Betty Ross, who asks Namor to help her with something as long as he’s in town. Her boxer friend was paralyzed in the ring and she suspects shady business. Namor looks into it and doesn’t like the boxing champ, so he challenges him to a fight. Namor trains (so it’s a legit fight) and two months later (!) Madison Square garden is sold out for the big match. Killer Casey’s team cheats left and right, but Namor wins the fight anyway (surprise!). Namor gives the winnings to the paralyzed boxer’s mother.

NOTE:
This story is a direct follow-up to SUBC 1 & 1/2, which is nice (also, yes, radium was like, half the plot in that issue). Continuity! So, despite SUBC 1 being published between M/MC 18-19, it takes place between M/MC 19-20.

HTC 2/2 is a standalone Sub-Mariner adventure, and should be moved closer to M/MC 13 (one reason is publication order, the other reason is a newspaper in HTC 2/2 says it happens in the fall of ’40; it’s currently placed in early/mid ’41).

There’s no way Namor had no adventures for two whole months, so I’ve opted to stick HTC 4/3 during this story. HTC 4/3 happens after SUBC 1 (HTC 4/3 notes that Namor’s now Emperor since his father “died,” which happened in SUBC 1). As noted, this story follows up directly from SUBC 1 and spans two months.

3rd Story:
By Jack Kirby & Joe Simon

APPEARANCES:
Vision, a human plant, reporters, police

SYNOPSIS:
The Vision investigates vampire killings and discovers a scientist created a human plant that needs blood to survive. The Vision kills it by setting it on fire.

NOTE:
Followed by “High Tension: The Origin of the ‘Angel’” text story (featuring, you guessed it, the Angel).

4th Story:
By Ray Gill & Bob Oksner

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance, Deadline Dawson, Doctor Watson, police (inc inspector Crane (also in fb)), Mrs. Crane, thieves, bystanders

FLASHBACK:
The inspector calls Terry, but drops dead.
SYNOPSIS:
Terry gets wrapped up in a bank robbery somehow involving radio tubes. An inspector asks for Terry’s help, but dies before he can tell Terry what’s going on. Terry figures out that thieves were robbing banks using radios to crack safes, and they used radios to kill inspector Crane.

5th Story:
By Paul Gustavson

APPEARANCES:
Angel, Cat’s Paw & her criminal network & her boss, some guy

SYNOPSIS:
The angel figures out that Cat’s Paw is killing people in the defense industry so she can get people who will work with her, so she can create a financial dictatorship. He finally traps her, but they’re interrupted by Cat’s Paw’s boss, who tries to kill her. Angel saves her, but she escapes. Oops.

6th Story:
By Ben Thompson

APPEARANCES:
Ka-Zar, Trajah, Nazi soldiers, British pilots, Chaka (an ape)

SYNOPSIS:
Ka-Zar hears about Nazis setting up a base in Ethiopia so he gets a bunch of his animal friends together and attacks them, eventually blowing up their base.

Chronologies! Also, since I got totally distracted by publication order, a bit of clean-up:

Do you include text stories in character chronologies?

I think the current policy is that they aren't, but a few people (like myself) have been lobbying for their inclusion. Hopefully if enough people ask for it, that policy will be overturned.

Probably have to look at each one on an individual case by case basis. If they seem not to follow general continuity, or just plain wrong about things, then they are not eligible for inclusion. I have the same problem with Hop Harrigan text stories. Early ones follow story continuity, but after WWII starts, they show him already in the USAAF fighting overseas, and even the locals dont match up with story continuity, so most of the later ones (written by someone else than the strip's regular writer) will be labeled not in continuity.
