MARVEL COMICS #1 (Oct 1939)

Text Story:
By Raymond Gill

APPEARANCES:
Bill Williams, crowd, Fred Turner, Ann, C.G. Clark

SYNOPSIS:
Bill Williams and his mechanic, Fred Turner, have designed a new gas feeder for his racecar. It’s untested, but Bill enters a race anyway. Fred is nervous it will explode, so he convinces Bill’s girlfriend, Ann, to sell the design to C.G. Clark, a big-time “motor magnet” and pull Bill out of the race before it’s too late. Ann succeeds, but it was unnecessary, since Bill wins the race anyway.

NOTE:
Obviously, the other stories in this issue are already analyzed, so I'm just doing the text story in this and the others below.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #2 (Dec 1939)

Text Story:
By David C. Cooke

APPEARANCES:
Polish inhabitants of Grybow, Angel, German pilots

SYNOPSIS:
Early in WWII, Nazi planes are bombing the Polish town of Grybow. The Angel is in town, so he stands on a roof and grabs a passing plane, climbing aboard. He kills the pilots and turns the guns on the other planes, saving the town.

NOTE:
This issue was on sale in October, so that means it must have been written very shortly after Germany invaded Poland in September. It’s kinda cool to see that Marvel was on the ball, almost instantly putting out a story playing off the invasion, portraying the Germans as invading villains. Unfortunately, the Angel’s efforts were for naught, since he obviously wasn’t able to save Poland from the invaders.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #3 (Jan 1940)

Text Story:
By David C. Cooke

APPEARANCES:
Bill Stern, British Army, Germany Army, French Army

SYNOPSIS:
Bill Stern, an American, leads a group of British and French forces in an attack on part of the Siegfried Line. He manages to crawl through No Man’s Land and throw a grenade through a bunker window, showing American determination to fight evil.

NOTES:
If it weren’t mentioned that the Germans are Nazis, I would think this was a WWI story. It must be set early in WWII when the French were still actively fighting the Germans.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #4 (Feb 1940)

Text Story:
By David C. Cooke

APPEARANCES:
Steve Naylor, Slip Rodney, Jim Stinson

SYNOPSIS:
Steve Naylor stops to pick up a hitchhiker, but it turns out to be escaped con, Slip Rodney. Slip pulls a gun on him and tells him to drive him out of the county. While driving through the town of Anniston, Slip tells Steve not to signal anything to anyone, which Steve does. A few miles outside of town, Slip makes Steve get out of his car and then drives off with it. Shortly thereafter, Jim Stinson, a gas station attendant, pulls up. When Steve didn’t wave to him like he always does when driving by, Jim knew something was up and alerted the police. They’re already setting up down the road to catch Slip.
