MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #29 (March 1942)
By Carl Burgos

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch, Toro, John Wilson, Javelin (Reginald Carter, a serial killer that uses… JAVELINS!) & his staff, Edwin Rushing, police, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
The Javelin is killing people all over town, so the chief puts Human Torch and Toro on the case. They find the Javelin, but he uses a carbon dioxide gun on them and knock them out. When the police arrive they find the heroes holding a javelin and blame them for the killings. Obviously, they fly away, then go to the Torch’s friend Edwin Rushing who works at a museum; he tells the Torch that the javelin has a poison on it that turns the holder into a murderer on full moons. Suddenly, they’re attacked by the killer and Toro is abducted. On Rushing’s advice, the Torch finds the killer in a castle upstate. He frees Toro, but they’re attacked by lions (!). The Torch and Toro eventually get the Javelin and bring him to the police.

NOTE:
When a fire breaks out, Jim Hammond creates a backdraft to drain the oxygen from the original fire, instead of commanding it to go away like he normally does. Science!

2nd Story:
By Bill Everett

APPEARANCES:
Sub-Mariner, Vicki Amhurst, Dick Arbor (rich guy, Vicki’s fiancé) & his butler, Arline Arbor (Dick’s sister), Mad Artist (“Stefan Natas,” Anton Devers, crazy artist posing as a rich guy) & his employees (Sam, Joe named), chorus girls (or rather, just their heads), a helpful fisherman

SYNOPSIS:
Having dealt with Falkon, the Sub-Mariner swims up to Virginia where he finds a lady in the ocean. He saves her and takes her to her fiancé where he learns that she went to a fancy party last night. Namor, the fiancé and his sister go to meet Stefan Natas to find out what happened, but don’t believe what he says. Namor investigates and finds a secret room with heads in jars. Namor feeds Natas to Natas’ pet sharks. He then learns Natas was actually a crazy painter that escaped an asylum in France.

3rd Story:
By Syd Shores?

APPEARANCES:
Vision, Dr. Smythe, Joan Smythe, Jones (pilot), gangsters (Legs Cachone named), South African bystanders (Boro named)

SYNOPSIS:
The world’s leading authority on sleeping sickness is called to a mine in South Africa to help with an epidemic (his daughter Joan comes with). During the boat trip The Vision warns Joan to turn back but she thinks it’s a dream. When they arrive they learn the mine has been taken over by gangsters and Smythe has been called over to tend to a wounded gangster. When he’s better he starts torturing the doctor and his daughter. The Vision arrives and beats the tar out of the gangsters.

NOTE:
Followed by “The Ship in the Desert” text story.

4th Story:
By Ray Gill & Bob Oksner

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance, Deadline Dawson, Doctor Watson, Caribbean bystanders (Diosa, Sr. Revuelta named)

SYNOPSIS:
Terry and Deadline are on assignment in the Caribbean to report on defense construction. They’re warned that voodoo is responsible for American engineers dying from the yellow plague. They meet a dancer who people think is a witch. They drop her off at work and follow Doctor Watson into the jungle, where they see the natives doing a dance no one’s ever seen. Also, they’re extracting mosquito venom (not that that’s how it works, but). They return to watch Diosa’s dance and Terry stops her boss from injecting Deadline with Yellow fever and turn him over to the police.

NOTE:
Why was Sr. Revuelta killing American’s? I don’t know, they don’t really say. Maybe he’s a racist?

5th Story:
By Ed Robbins

APPEARANCES:
Jimmy Jupiter, a talking bee, a talking rabbit, Witches of Encore

SYNOPSIS:
Jimmy Jupiter takes a nap and is woken by a talking bee who takes him to the Land of Nowhere. He meets a talking rabbit and three witches. He eventually goes back to Earth and wakes up, thinking the bee stung him.

6th Story:
By ???

APPEARANCES:
Angel, a Wolf-Man (actually Gonji in disguise, a medicine man), Native Americans (Ramo named)

SYNOPSIS:
A Native American is killed by a werewolf. The next day Angel reads about it in the newspaper, so he charters a flight across the country to check it out. He watches Native Americans give an offering of gold, then later a werewolf comes by and picks it up. Angel tries to follow it and starts shooting random wolves. He’s attacked and captured by the Native Americans, who prepare to sacrifice him to the werewolf. Angel escapes, fights the Wolf-Man and some wolves, then reveals the Wolf-Man as the tribe’s medicine man in a costume. He got greedy for gold and tricked his tribe, basically.

7th Story:
By Al Fagaly

This Patriot story is already in the MCP.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #30 (April 1942)
By Carl Burgos

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch, Toro, Mary Orchid, Stephen Cole & his men, Leslie Garden (Mary’s fiancé), crooks, police

SYNOPSIS:
Mary Orchid asks the Human Torch for help in finding her missing fiancé; he discovered a fantastic new metal (“Y9”) and she thinks foreign agents are responsible. He agrees, then stops her from being abducted by mutes in front of his apartment. They think she was being kidnapped for another reason; her guardian is the director of an expensive “Spencer Collection” of diamonds at a nearby museum. They go to check it out, but Mary is abducted and men in metal suits steal the collection. They trap one of them and discover its Mary’s fiancé, who is arrested (but the Torch notices whip marks on his back). Torch and Toro look around the museum and find another metal man, who has Mary. They free her but the guy runs off with the diamonds. The Torch and Toro return to the police and expose Stephen Cole (Mary’s guardian) as the mastermind. He admits to torturing Leslie into creating the suits and directing the robbery. Cole is defeated and everything works out great.

NOTE:
Mary Orchid says that the Human Torch has been helping people all his life. Normally that’s just a turn of phrase, but in the Human Torch’s case it’s absolutely true. Basically, since the moment he was “born” (from his concrete womb, if not quite since he gained sentience) he’s actually, literally been helping people for his entire life. That one throwaway line essentially encapsulates why I like Jim Hammond. From his first moments of existence, his barely-formed instincts were to try to make life better for others, unselfishly, simply because he had the ability to do so.

2nd Story:
By Bill Everett

APPEARANCES:
Sub-Mariner, Fen, Atlanteans (Falda, Barta named), Nazi soldiers & officers, French bystaders (Henri, Jean, Gaston, Guillaume named), British reporters & Air Force

SYNOPSIS:
Swimming home from Virginia, the Sub-Mariner returns to Atlantis and chats with his mother, who is concerned about how things are going in France. Namor assembles a war party and attacks occupied France. As a retaliation, the Vichy Nazis execute fifty prisoners. As the Sub-Mariner and his men make more raids, more prisoners are executed. Changing tactics, the Atlanteans disguise themselves as humans and begin an insurgency within the oppressed French population. A counter-strike is engaged and the British join in, but it isn’t quite enough. The Sub-Mariner is hopeful, though; after another few attacks like this France might be free from Nazi oppression!

NOTE:
Oh, Namor. If only you had focused your attention on France sooner. Next issue your rage will be directed toward some else…

Also, all told, this issue probably spans two or three weeks.

3rd Story:
By Syd Shores

APPEARANCES:
Vision, the Crank (Mr. Powers) & his agent, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
The Crank is threatening to destroy a city unless he’s paid a fortune! The next day, strange vibrations destroy a skyscraper. The Vision appears and quickly finds (who he think is) the Crank. He chases him, but more vibrations strike the city and damage the building they’re in. The “Crank” is injured; Vision learns he’s only a henchman. As the henchman dies he tells the Vision that the Crank is using supersonic machines to attack the city, and that the Crank is really Mr. Powers. The Vison confront him, who admits he’s an embezzler. Powers/Crank activates his vibrational machine to attack the Vision but accidentally destroys the building he’s in, killing himself.

NOTE:
As a building collapses around him, the Vision breaks a water main to cushion his fall. Strange for an other-dimensional being, I guess, but whatever.

Also, followed by “Lumps of Death!” text story by Mickey Spillane. He’s done a bunch of text stories in previous issues but I haven’t mentioned it.

4th Story:
By Al Fagaly

This Patriot story is already in the MCP.

5th Story:
By Ray Gill & Bob Oksner

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance, Deadline Dawson, Doctor Watson, Finog (jewel thief, Egyptian), Mr. Nutley (owns Pharaoh’s Eye ruby), Egyptians (in fb), police

FLASHBACK:
In ancient Egypt, people killed each other to get the Pharaoh’s Eye ruby.
SYNOPSIS:
The Pharaoh’s Eye ruby is arriving in town for a museum exhibit and Terry wants to check it out. Of course, it’s stolen a replaced with a fake overnight. Terry figures out a thief disguised himself as a mummy so he could stay in the museum and disguised himself as a guard.

6th Story:
Ed Robbins

APPEARANCES:
Jimmy Jupiter & his parents, Wump-Jump, Ruffy Rabbit (the one from last issue, named here), fairies, gnomes riding on bats

SYNOPSIS:
Jimmy tries to tell his parents about the Land of Nowhere but they won’t believe him and send him to bed. The Wump-Jump and Ruffy Rabbit show up in his window and take him back to the Land of Nowhere and show him dancing fairies. Gnomes attack the fairies and Jimmy shoos them away, but a bat flies at Jimmy. He wakes up in his bed and sees a bat flying out the window.

7th Story:
By ???

APPEARANCES:
Angel, Chalk-Face (Reisel, also in fb), bystanders, doctors (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Reisel gets a disease that destroys his blood, so he starts killing people to replenish himself.
SYNOPSIS:
The Angel finally tracks down Chalk-Face (a serial killer) and discovers he’s been draining people of their blood. After hearing Chalk-Face’s story, Angel kills him.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #31 (June 1942)
By Carl Burgos

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch, Toro, Imperialist soldiers (Admiral Nodope named), US Marines

SYNOPSIS:
December 8, 1941: The Human Torch and Toro fly to San Francisco to defend the city against an attack by the Imperialist Japanese. They defeat an invasion of planes, then take the Japanese destroyer back to Japan and sink it there, so the Imperialists can’t claim it went down in battle. Then, the Torch and Toro free some captured Marines. Then, the Torch and Toro kill a whole bunch of Imperialist soldiers and leave a “V for Victory” flame image in the sky above Japan as they leave.

NOTE:
Well, that’s a pretty definitive placement clue.

2nd Story:
By Bill Everett

APPEARANCES:
Sub-Mariner, US military (Col. Watson named), Atlanteans (Minha, Dasha named), Imperialist soldiers

SYNOPSIS:
December 11, 1941: The Sub-Mariner arrives in Washington DC and offers Atlantis’ help in fighting the Imperialists. He returns to Atlantis, assembles his Ice-Battalion and they attack an Imperialist fleet in the Pacific. The Sub-Mariner interrogates one of the soldiers and learns they’re a suicide division planning to attack Dan Diego. He warns the US military and keeps the attacking fleet busy until the Americans take over the fight.

NOTE:
Well, that’s a pretty definitive placement clue.

3rd Story:
By ???

APPEARANCES:
Vision, a jelly monster, Imperialists, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
The Imperialist Japanese drop a jelly monster somewhere in America; it digests everything it rolls across. It encounters an oil refinery which explodes when digested. The explosion sends bits of the jelly monster in every direction. The Vision appears from the explosion’s smoke and figures out that the monster was dropped from a dirigible. He attacks the Imperialists inside and notices they can direct the monster with a whistle, and that the separate blobs can fuse into bigger creatures. The Vision tosses the leader into a jelly monster (killing him), takes his whistle and commands the monsters to fuse back together. Then, he grabs an oil tanker and sets the monster on fire.

NOTE:
A newspaper headline (partially obscured) says the US is now at war with Japan. Again, it really seems like this is the first story set after Pearl Harbor.

Also, followed by “Killer’s Return” text story (by Mickey Spillane).

4th Story:
By Al Fagaly

This Patriot story is already in the MCP. HOWEVER, guess what? A newspaper headline is talking about Japan. Despite the Partiot fighting Nazis instead of Imperialists in this story, I’m going to say that this is the first post-Pearl Harbor Patriot story (not immediately after like the Torch and Namor stories, just “after”).

5th Story:
By Ray Gill & Bob Oksner

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance, Deadline Dawson, Doctor Watson, Tex (rodeo cowboy), “Ghost-Rider” (famous rodeo guy), Mr. Roney (horse trainer), police, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Terry and Deadline visit their cowboy pal Tex at a rodeo. They watch as the famous Ghost-Rider does some horse tricks, but he’s shot and dies. Terry figures out it was a jealous horse trainer and chases him; the guy tries to run but accidentally electrocutes himself on the third rail of a subway and dies.

6th Story:
By Ed Robbins

APPEARANCES:
Jimmy Jupiter, Jimmy’s mom (bts), amusement park workers & attendees, talking candies, Gloomy Gusses

SYNOPSIS:
Jimmy’s mom, upset he won’t stop talking about his fantasy land, sends him to the amusement park. He rides a roller coaster and the car flies off the tracks into the air and lands on another roller coaster in the Land of Nowhere, but he’s attacked by talking candies when he tries to eat one. Jimmy apologizes and they become friends, but they’re attacked by the Gloomy Gusses (old guys in top hats w/canes) who melt the candies. Jimmy’s captured and they plan to turn him into a Gloomy Gus, but he tickles them. When they laugh they run away.

NOTE:
Huh. He didn’t reappear on Earth and wonder if it was a dream at the end this time. Odd.

7th Story:
By ???

APPEARANCES:
Angel, a pilot, Mr. Gondor, Imperialist saboteurs, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
The Angel stops an Imperialist from setting fire to a forest outside San Francisco. Using clues he tracks him back to a funeral home and finds another hidden in a coffin. The funeral home’s manager (Mr. Gondor) knocks the Angel out and puts him in a coffin and prepares to bury him in a sailor’s funeral. The Angel knocks on the coffin and is let out during the funeral. He defeats the funeral home manager, who admits to smuggling in saboteurs when dead sailors from Hawaii are shipped in.

NOTE:
Dead soldiers being shipped in from Hawaii? This REALLY seems like the first post-Pearl Harbor Angel story.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #32 (July 1942)
By Carl Burgos

APPEARANCES:
Human Torch, Toro (also in fb), Betty Rooge (Portl’s secretary), Frank Portl (also in fb), his butler & party guests (Prince von Scholsstein named), police (Bob named)

FLASHBACK:
Toro looks around the place for clues but is knocked unconscious. Someone pours wax all over him and turns him into a statue.
SYNOPSIS:
The Human Torch and Toro attend a party at a sculptor’s place (Frank Portl), but he’s not there. They do find a wax statue of him, though, and his secretary dead in the bathroom. They tell all the guests they can’t leave until the police arrive and interview them. The butler and a foreigner are suspects, but Toro is missing. The Torch finds him turned into a statue in another room. He melts the wax and Toro is freed. They start melting other statues and one starts to run away. They melt the wax and find out it’s Portl. After some questioning the Torch figures out that Portl murdered his secretary when she found out he was selling state secrets.

2nd Story:
By Elvey Jay & Carl Pfeufer

APPEARANCES:
Sub-Mariner, US military (J. Melville, Capt. Malcolm, Adm. Stanley named), Peter Malcolm (Capt. Malcolm’s son), his mom & sister, fisherman, Nazi sub crew (von Grubb, Hans named)

SYNOPSIS:
The Sub-Mariner is asked to help look at east coast defenses. Meanwhile, a super-submarine is spotted off Maryland’s coast. A ship is sent to investigate and the super-sub (it looks like an octopus) destroys it. The Sub-Mariner arrives, hears about the attack and investigates. Meanwhile, the ship’s captain (Malcolm) is the only survivor and is interrogated by the super-sub crew; they plan to attack the White House. Malcolm won’t talk, so the Nazi captain gets an idea. Meanwhile, Namor looks around and watches the Nazis abduct Malcolm’s son. He follows them into the super-sub, frees the kid and beats up the crew. Capt. Malcolm pilots the sub to shore. The Sub-Mariner is told that the reason he came here still hasn’t happened yet, so he better get to it.

NOTE:
To be continued, I guess. *skips ahead to the next issue* Nope. Totally new story that doesn’t have anything to do with this one. Oh well.

3rd Story:
By ???

APPEARANCES:
Vision, Leila (US counter-espionage agent), US Navy, Imperialist navy, bystanders

SYNOPSIS:
Submarines shaped like sharks are shooting torpedoes filled with gas. The Vision appears and meets Leila, and the two discover the sharks are actually Imperialist subs. Together, they board one and use it to destroy the others.

NOTE:
Followed by “The Last Ride” text story by Mickey Spillane.

4th Story:
By Ed Robbins

APPEARANCES:
Jimmy Jupiter, the Fun People (the talking candies from last issue), Captain Cookie & the Cookie People, China People (in Tea Land), Fido (a dog that only eats licorice), Kakeeters (licorice men), amusement park worker

SYNOPSIS:
The Fu People introduce Jimmy to Captain Cookie, who takes him to Tea Land. Jimmy saves Tea Land’s king’s daughter from the rampaging Bull in the China Shoppe and they throw him a banquet as a thank you. Also, Jimmy gets his first kiss from the king’s daughter, and a dog (Fido) as a gift. When Jimmy and the Captain leave they get swept up in a storm and eventually dock on an island. They’re attacked by the Kakeeters, who start eating the Cookie People. Jimmy sics his new dog on them. They escapes and return to the Fun People. Jimmy decides it’s time to return home so his parents don’t get worried (he’s been here for over a week!) and gets back on the roller coaster. He wakes up on the roller coaster on Earth and wonders if it was all a dream…

NOTE:
Ah, there we go.

5th Story:
By Ray Gill & Bob Oksner

APPEARANCES:
Terry Vance (also as “Mr. Pitts”), Deadline Dawson, Doctor Watson, Mrs. Kaye & her daughter Jane, Dr. Mefis & his servant, police

SYNOPSIS:
Mrs. Kaye has been robbed and is seeing her psychologist more often; her daughter is worried. Terry and Deadline want to talk with Mrs. Kaye, but Dr. Mefis is suspicious. He steals Terry’s notebook to see what he knows. Meanwhile, Terry notices that all of the doctor’s clients are robbery victims. Terry disguises himself as an old man and poses as one of Dr. Mefis’ new clients. The doctor hypnotizes Terry and learns who he really is; he commands Terry to commit suicide. Doctor Watson attacks the guy and Terry wakes up. Dr. Mefis attacks the kids with a boa constrictor, but Terry chops it in half. The police arrive and arrest Mefis; Terry reveals he was hypnotizing people into robbing themselves.

NOTE:
Terry is called “Jerry” a number of times in this issue. Also, Terry calls Mefis the “Phantom Burglar,” but he doesn’t go by that. It was a name Terry made up.

6th Story:
By Al Fagaly

This Patriot story is already in the MCP.

Also, CA:P 1 shows a going away party for Jeff Mace’s friend Jack Casey; he left for the Navy in “January 1942.” The problem is, Jack continues to appear in Patriot strips until M/MC 44, give or take. Or, until somewhere in 1943. Like, a year and a half after “January 1942.”

I’m going to assume the send-off party was for Casey going to basic training. Then, instead of being assigned for active duty, he was made a war correspondent or something. Then, after M/MC 44 he actually went off for active duty. This would still allow for Jack’s European appearance in MARVELS 1.

I know that’s not the intention of CA:P 1, but there’s over a year’s worth of M/MC appearances to account for. And, CA:P 1 continues on through 1942, referencing other stories that can’t be moved (like the Patriot joining the Liberty Legion, etc.).

7th Story:
By ???

APPEARANCES:
Angel, an ogre & his Boboes, two victims

SYNOPSIS:
An ogre prepares to feed some humans he captured to his Boboes (small gremlin-like creatures). Meanwhile, the Angel is investigating recent disappearances in the woods and arrives at the ogre’s mill. The Angel stops them from eating the two people, but is overpowered. The ogre explains that he bakes his Boboes out of human blood, creating them. Angel breaks free and kills the ogre; when he dies all the Boboes pop like bubbles and die. Angel frees the two victims.

NOTE:
As far as I can tell, this is just AN ogre, not THE Ogre.
