MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #13 (Nov 1940)

Text Story:
By Andrew McWhiney

APPEARANCES:
Danny the Dud, Capt. McGraw, Warden Dawes, cops, Sam the Barber, guards

SYNOPSIS:
Danny the Dud is going to prison. He’s been sentenced to seven years, but he’s not worried, since he’ll get out in five for good behavior and he’s stashed away $600,000 that he can live off of the rest of his life once he’s out. He feels a little bad about having to double-cross Sam the Barber, but it’s a cut-throat world, after all. Arriving at the prison, he’s processed in and passes his medical exam. When he sits down for a shave he’s shocked to see that the man with the razor is Sam the Barber. Sam slashes Danny’s throat and then surrenders to the guards. He knows they don’t approve, but it’s a cut-throat world, after all.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #14 (Dec 1940)

Text Story:
By Andrew McWhiney

APPEARANCES:
Native Americans, railroaders, townsfolk, Tommy Bryan, Yardmaster Barnes, Steve Hanson, horses, Red, US cavalry

SYNOPSIS:
Tommy Bryan, Steve Hanson, and Red bravely take a train through a war party’s bullets to provide a shield for townspeople under fire to pause and fight the fires burning their town.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #15 (Jan 1941)

Text Story:
By David C. Cooke

APPEARANCES:
Beef Turner, Martian Imperialistic Army, Iron Mike

SYNOPSIS:
While on patrol for the United Nations of Earth, Beef Turner stumbles across a Martian Dreadnaught. They get into a dogfight, and the Martians have improved their armor, but Beef finds that he’s able to fire up their rockets and disable their ship.

NOTE:
This story obviously takes place in the future. To my knowledge, this reality hasn’t been given an Earth-designation. Also, Iron Mike is the name of the “automatic pilot” on Beef’s ship. Since it has a name, I’m interpreting it as an artificial intelligence (like J.A.R.V.I.S. in the Iron Man films), even though it has no dialogue.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #16 (Feb 1941)

Text Story:
By Andrew McWhiney

APPEARANCES:
Larry, Nick, Royal Air Force, Smith

SYNOPSIS:
Larry and Nick have built an experimental helicopter, but the Royal Air Force won’t allow it to be flown. When a German bombing run targets their air field while all of the fighters are away, Larry and Nick violate orders and fly their helicopter up behind the bombers and shoot them out of the sky. When they land an officer expresses admiration and curiosity about their invention.
