He rescues the leopard, and all the camp dwellers who aren’t killed flee, including De Kraft. Ka-Zar keeps the jar of paint, deciding to use it on De Kraft’s body if he ever catches him and to hang the corpse up in the sky like another star.

MARVEL MYSTERY COMICS #20 (Jun 1941)

Text Story:
By Ray Gill

APPEARANCES:
Listeners, Angel, warden (Angel’s father), Angel’s mother, Bob Soler

FLASHBACK 1:
The Angel is born to the young wife of a prison warden. She dies soon after, so the boy grows up in the prison with his father.
FLASHBACK 2:
14 years old, the Angel, along with his friend, Bob Soler, are hiking out in the woods away from the prison. The Angel is upset because a convict he’s befriended is being executed that night, but the Angel suspects he’s innocent. A storm picks up and the boys run for cover. They come across a man with a bullet wound lying next to his disabled car. The man carries an envelope that contains proof the convict about to be executed is innocent. The execution is in 15 minutes and they are miles away, so they know there’s no time to return to the prison. Instead, the Angel tells Bob to tend to the man and try to repair the car (it was struck by lightning) while he grabs the car’s jack and a cable. He runs to nearby power lines that lead to the prison. He attaches the cable to the jack and then tosses the cable over the power lines. This blows a fuse somewhere and knocks out the power to the prison, preventing the execution. Returning to the prison, they turn over the evidence. The convict gratefully dubs the boy who saved him his “angel,” which the boy will years later use as his superhero name.
SYNOPSIS:
A group of people talk to each other about the Angel, wondering where he came from. Bob Soler, his childhood friend, reveals the Angel’s background, figuring that everyone he’s talking to is good and thus can keep a secret.

NOTE:
I’ve split the backstory into two flashbacks in order to place the flashback in Marvels Project #1 between them. Unfortunately, since text stories aren’t broken up into panels, I can’t really follow MCP’s formatting here. Instead, I’ll list the paragraphs and let MCP decide the proper formatting.

Neither of Angel’s parents are named, so I don’t have anything to list them by in a chronology.

In a cool bit of continuity, the events of this text story are referenced in Marvels Project #2.
