Post by Col_Fury »

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #½ (1999)
By Eric Stephenson & Min S. Ku

APPEARANCES:
Spider-Man (also in fb), Mary Jane Watson, Mr. Fantastic (bts), Flash Thompson, J. Jonah Jameson (also in fb), Col. John Jameson (in fb), Venom (in fb), Carnage (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Another Earth has been discovered on the other side of the sun, so Col. John Jameson mans a flight to check it out. Spider-Man tries to stop Venom and Carnage from hitching a ride, but fails. Spider-Man is blamed and he’s made public enemy number one.
SYNOPSIS:
Spider-Man shows Mary Jane his fancy new Mr. Fantastic-designed suit, then saves Flash Thompson from a fire. Then, he hitches a ride on another flight to Counter-Earth to rescue Col. John Jameson.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #1 (December 1999)
By Eric Stephenson & Andy Kuhn

APPEARANCES:
Spider-Man (also in fb), Lord Tyger, Sir Ram, Lady Vermin, Ursula, High Evolutionary, Daniel “Bromley” Hoskins, Karen O’Malley, Git, Col. John Jameson, Venom, Carnage, Shayne Jones, Naoko Yamada-Jones

FLASHBACK:
Recap of SMU2 0.5 (repeat). Spider-Man prepares for his trip to Counter-Earth (new).
SYNOPSIS:
Spider-Man crash lands on Counter-Earth, finds out its run by the High Evolutionary and enforced by his Beastials (you know, the New Men). He meets the human resistance and finds Col. John Jameson, but he doesn’t want to leave (and besides, they don’t have a spaceship for the return trip). Spider-Man finds an apartment and starts exploring Counter-Earth.

NOTE:
I’ve never seen the cartoon, but Peter Parker gets a ride on the spaceship to Counter-Earth which crash lands. Nothing’s mentioned explicitly about it, but I’m under the impression that the entire crew dies except for Peter (who only tagged along as a favor to Jonah). Now he’s stuck on Counter-Earth; that strikes me as an odd setup for a cartoon series. It pretty much requires the viewer to already be familiar with Spider-Man’s classic status quo, but also to not really be interested in it anymore. Also, a ship-full of people die to strand him in this new place. wth?

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #2 (January 2000)
By Eric Stephenson & Andy Kuhn

APPEARANCES:
Spider-Man, Green Goblin, Shayne Jones, Naoko Yamada-Jones, Venom, Carnage, Synoptic, Mr. Mineo

SYNOPSIS:
Spider-Man finds a monster in the sewer attacking Beastials. He teams up with the Green Goblin to fight it. Meanwhile, Spider-Man’s landlady is kidnapped. It turns out Venom and Carnage (who are being controlled by the Synoptic) are controlling the monster and some Beastials, and they’re beaten up by Spider-Man and Carnage. Spider-Man’s landlady is rescued. Peter gets a job selling photos of Spider-Man to a newspaper.

NOTE:
Venom and Carnage don’t seem to have people hosts in this series. They both slip through grates and stuff that a body with bones just can’t fit through.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #3 (February 2000)
By Eric Stephenson & Andy Kuhn

APPEARANCES:
Spider-Man, Mr. Mineo, Brute (Reed Richards, also in fb), Daniel “Bromley” Hoskins, Karen O’Malley, Ben Grimm (also in fb), Sue Storm (in fb), Johnny Storm (also in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Reed Richards and his pals take a rocket into space and it’s bombarded by cosmic rays. Sue and Johnny die, Reed is turned into the Brute and apparently Ben is just fine.
SYNOPSIS:
Peter’s newspaper job sends him to meet famous scientist Reed Richards, who turns out to be a bit of a jerk. They go to a Beastial party which is attacked by the Brute. Spider-Man fights the Brute and is knocked out. Spider-Man later wakes up to find out that Reed is actually nice (the jerk thing is an act), he knows he’s the Brute (the Brute/Reed “enemy” relationship is also an act), and he’s working with the human resistance against the High Evolutionary.

NOTE:
Spider-Man reveals that Mary Jane is his girlfriend in this reality (meaning, they’re not married).

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #4 (March 2000)
By Eric Stephenson & Andy Kuhn

APPEARANCES:
Spider-Man, Shayne Jones, Naoko Yamada-Jones, Green Goblin, Brixton, Astrid

SYNOPSIS:
Spider-Man wonders what Counter-Earth is like outside New York, because he’s heard it’s pretty terrible. He makes it just outside the boarder of the city and finds a pretty nice place of people who have left the city. He meets Astrid, the Counter-Earth version of Gwen Stacy, then goes back to New York.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #5 (April 2000)
By Eric Stephenson & Andy Kuhn

APPEARANCES:
Spider-Man, Shayne Jones, Naoko Yamada-Jones, Wolverine (Jones, revealed as -BTS in last issue), Chameleon

SYNOPSIS:
A serial killer is on the loose! It turns out to be the Chameleon. Spider-Man teams up with Wolverine to defeat the Chameleon. Also, Wolverine is Peter’s landlady’s husband, transformed through experiments by the High Evolutionary. The End.

NOTE:
And that’s it! Spider-Man even comments on the abrupt ending.

Poking around the internet tells me that there are some differences between the cartoon and the comics adaptation. Some characters have different names (like Peter’s boss Mineo/Meugniot, and some members of the human resistance), etc. Given the discrepancies, I’m going to say this is like Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends; the cartoon and comics are slightly different universes, and that the comics version is the one that gets murdered in Spider-Verse.

Also, the cartoon only lasted one season (13 episodes). Also also, over a year went by between the airing of the third and fourth episodes (which means this series was published entirely between episodes three & four, with the possible exception of the Wizard #½). It really seems like the stars were aligned against this thing from the start.
