ANGEL:REVELATIONS #1-5 and Updated Angel Chronology

Here is my review for ANGEL: REVELATIONS #1-5. At first, the story seemed to be a complete retelling of Angel's origin, but further analysis shows that it flows almost seamlessly between the two stories with very few continuity errors. I have written the review for use with both the MCP and Marvel Calendar (MCAL).

I would like to thank Dhall for his incredible analysis of Angel's early life, as seen in the Archive number 50. Much of the work is derived from his own (giving due credit where it is due - great work!!), and I have simply incorporated the events of ANGEL:REV 1-5 into his analysis, as well as added some notes for XF 47 and UX 54/2. My review goes up until UX 55/2 (4:1-4:3)-FB, shortly after Warren leaves school.

This story occurs during Warren's "senior" year (ANGEL:REV 2). He is "seventeen" (ANGEL:REV 1) during the first semester (ANGEL:REV 1-3), and probably turns 18 during the year of his second semester (ANGEL:REV 4-5). OMITTX 3 indicates that he is a sophomore during this time, but this is probably erroneous given this new information.

The information of his private school is somewhat confusing. XF 47 calls it the Fairburn Boys' School, and M/FAN 50 indicates there was also a girls' school across the river. However in ANGEL:REV 1, it is called St. Joseph's Preparatory School, a co-ed religious private school in upstate Vermont. One possibility is that Warren initially attended Fairburn and later transferred to St. Joseph's sometime before his senior year, or the school could just have undergone both a co-education policy and name change. The brief reference to this as a military school in UX 14 is probably erroneous.

Warren goes to a school dance with Cressida (later Cressida Desford), a mutant obsessed girl from "girls prep school across the lake," and later takes a walk with her. A caption notes that this is before he grew his wings.

*ANGEL:REV 1 (1-5, 18-20)
A preacher (whose name is never revealed) comes to farmhouse to investigate Mary Margaret, a young mutant girl who has prophetic visions of other mutants, as well as hands that bleed like the stigmata. Margaret tells him she has had future visions describing the X-Men, and the preacher is particularly interested in the boy with wings. The preacher abducts the girl to lead him to other mutants, shooting off her left foot so she cannot run away (as revealed in ANGEL:REV 3 (19-21)) and murdering her mother.
Notes: Daytime, overcast, barren trees (but this could be attributed to dry farmland). "Friday at three." Probably September of YEAR 1, as ANGEL:REV 3 (19-21), which occurs in December, places this "three months" before. Margaret has been having visions for "six months," probably beginning in March of YEAR 1.

*ANGEL:REV 3 (20:1-20:3, 20:5-20:7)-FB
The preacher uses the visions of Mary Margaret to guide him across the country to at least three mutants, perhaps more. These mutants have what appear to be divine gifts, and he kills them.
Note: Occurs over a period of "three months" between ANGEL:REV 1 (18-20) and ANGEL:REV 3 (19-21).

*ANGEL:REV 1 (6-10)
Warren wins the high jumping event at a track meet, bringing victory to St. Joseph's Preparatory School. This earns him the enmity of his teammate Brandon Hardy (son of the American Vice President). Coach Shea mentions that Warren broke an Olympic record and suspects him of using performance enhancing drugs.
Notes: Daytime. "Seven months" before ANGEL:REV 5 (1-17), which occurs April 21 of YEAR 2. A this is also Warren's "senior" year (ANGEL:REV 2), it is sometime before Halloween (ANGEL:REV 2), and that Warren has been getting faster and stronger "the last few weeks," this probably occurs in September of YEAR 1

*ANGEL:REV 1 (11-12)
During a choir recital at the school's cathedral, an angry Amanda Cobb (Warren's girlfriend) asks Andrew Palmer (Warren's friend) where Warren is. They are chastised by Father Jerome Reynolds.
Notes: Daytime, autumn trees. Probably same day as ANGEL:REV 1 (6-10).

*ANGEL:REV 1 (13-17)
Warren writes a letter to his parents describing the changes his body is going through and the bruises appearing on his back, but ultimately tears it up. Andrew sees him throw the letter away and secretly retrieves it (as revealed in ANGEL:REV 2). Warren briefly talks with Amanda as a jealous Brandon watches.
Notes: Daytime, autumn leaves falling. Probably same day as ANGEL:REV 1 (6-10). Warren is "seventeen." Although Warren is shown in his room alone, he probably currently has a roommate as his wings have not yet begun to grow (as seen in UX 54/2 (3:4-3:5)). Warren's parents' address is revealed as 4739 Anderson Lane, Fort Washington, New York, 10016.

*ANGEL:REV 1 (21-22)
Warren awakens from a nightmare in his dorm room. He finds a large white feather on the floor.
Notes: Nighttime. Probably same day as ANGEL:REV 1 (6-10).

*ANGEL:REV 2 (1-6)
At the girls' dormitory, Warren and Amanda become intimate, but Amanda freaks out when she feels the bruises on his back. Warren, feeling the need to keep his secret hidden, tells her that it is a sports injury, then angrily breaks up with her.
Notes: Daytime, green grass and trees. Day of "Halloween night" (ANGEL:REV 2 (13-14)), probably October 31 of YEAR 1.

*ANGEL:REV 2 (7-9)
In the school's chapel, Andrew Palmer is approached by Father Reynolds for his "weekly confession," and it is apparent that Reynolds is sexually abusing him.
Notes: Same day as ANGEL:REV 2 (1-6), probably October 31 of YEAR 1. A stained glass mural of St. George slaying the dragon is in the background. The full story of St. George is depicted in SSOC 22-FB.

*ANGEL:REV 2 (10-12)
Amanda approaches Brandon and tells him that Warren dumped her. They become involved and Amanda tells Brandon that to get revenge on Warren, Brandon should haze Warren's friend Andrew that night on Hell Night (Halloween Night).
Notes: Daytime, "four hours" after ANGEL:REV 2 (1-6), which occurred "this morning," probably October 31 of YEAR 1. Brandon plans on hazing Andrew "tonight." Warren is a "senior" and Andrew is a "sophomore." Their families know each other and Warren is expected to "look out for him."

*ANGEL:REV 2 (13-14)
Warren shows the feather he found to Mr. Walsh, his biology teacher, who tells him of several books on ornithology to read.
Notes: Dusk, falling autumn leaves. "Halloween night," same day as ANGEL:REV 2 (1-6), probably October 31 of YEAR 1.

*ANGEL:REV 2 (15-20)
While Warren reads a book on ornithology, Brandon and his friends abduct Andrew for Hell Night to haze him. After Warren hears Andrew calling for help, he finds Brandon and his friends holding Andrew under a scalding hot shower in the communal bathroom. Warren makes them let Andrew go, and then punches out Brandon.
Notes: Nighttime, barren trees. Same day as ANGEL:REV 2 (1-6), probably October 31 of YEAR 1. There is a reference to "the first Hell Night was celebrated on St. Joe's campus in 1924."

*ANGEL:REV 2 (21-22)
In his room, Brandon tells Amanda that Warren is a dead man. In Warren's room, Andrew tells Warren that he read the letter that Warren threw out and is aware of the bruises on his back.
Notes: Nighttime. Same day as ANGEL:REV 2 (1-6), probably October 31 of YEAR 1.

*UX 54/2 (3:1-3:3)
Warren earns top marks and excels in sports at the school, becoming a five letter man. During a soccer game, other students become jealous and notice that he is different, and make fun of his large shoulder blades in the locker room.
Notes: One or two days before UX 54/2 (3:4-3:5), occurs "a night or two later." Despite the reference in OMITTX 3 that this occurs during "April of Warren's sophomore year in high school," this is actually Warren's senior year (ANGEL:REV 2), and this must occur between ANGEL:REV 2 (October 31, he has no wings yet) and ANGEL:REV 3 (late December, his wings are fully grown), but still warm enough to play soccer outside in shorts, so probably November of YEAR 1.

*UX 54/2 (3:4-3:5)
Warren awakens one night and finds another feather (he found the first feather in ANGEL:REV 1 (21-22)) in his bed. He is shocked to find a pair of small wings growing from his back. He also currently shares his dorm room with a roommate. In an effort to keep his growing wings hidden, Warren soon works to alienate most of his schoolmates and get a private room.
Notes: "A night or two" after UX 54/2 (3:1-3:3). Despite the reference in OMITTX 3 that this occurs during "April of Warren's sophomore year in high school," this is actually Warren's senior year (ANGEL:REV 2), and this must occur between ANGEL:REV 2 (October 31, he has no wings yet) and ANGEL:REV 3 (late December, his wings are fully grown), but still warm enough to play soccer outside in shorts in UX 54/2 (3:1-3:3), so probably November of YEAR 1. The roommate depicted sleeping in the background could possibly be Cameron Hodge, confirmed as Warren's roommate in private school in OHOTMU '89 3. BTS Warren soon shows his wings to Dr. Stuart, his family doctor, the first person he showed his wings to (X:HY 14).

Warren removes his pajama top, and finds that his wings have grown larger. He can no longer deny them.

Warren keeps his wings bound.

UO 3 (4:2)
Warren tries to drive distance between himself and his classmates, by acting strangely, in this panel he is wearing a trench coat to class, even though it is 70 degrees and sunny outside.

UO 3 (4:3)
Warren's wings have grown to full length.

UO 3 (4:4-4:6)
Warren tries a new coat to see if he can hide his wings under it, but they still show through.

UO 3 (4:7)
Warren loses his friends, and quits sports, and withdraws from the world, all to hide his wings.

Warren beats up a bully that is picking on Cameron Hodge.

Warren is given a private room.

*ANGEL:REV 3 (1-4:4)
Warren calls his parents to tell them he will be staying at the school during Christmas vacation, but his father seems rather indifferent. Andrew decides to remain with him. Brandon and Amanda are picked up from the school by the Secret Service (Brandon's father is the vice president), and Brandon is suspicious of Warren.
Notes: Apparently dusk, falling snow and barren trees. "December twentieth," probably December 20 of YEAR 1. Warren's father erroneously calls his wife Margaret; her name is actually Kathryn (and it was also written on an envelope as Kathryn in ANGEL:REV 1).

*ANGEL:REV 3 (4:5-5)
Warren and Andrew spend time together.

*ANGEL:REV 3 (6-9)
Warren shows his wings to Andrew. He has been binding them to hide them during the day, and practicing flying at night. They decide to see how fast Warren can go.
Notes: "December twenty-third," probably December 23 of YEAR 1.

*ANGEL:REV 3 (10-16)
As Andrew skates across a frozen pond, Warren flies and races him. Andrew falls though thin ice but he is rescued by Warren, who does CPR on Andrew in his dorm room.
Notes: Daytime, snow on ground, barren trees. Same day as ANGEL:REV 3 (6-9), probably December 23 of YEAR 1.

*ANGEL:REV 3 (17-18)
After Father Reynolds approaches him, Andrew confesses to Warren that the reverend has been molesting him.
"December 24th," probably December 24 of YEAR 1.

*ANGEL:REV 3 (19-21)
At a motel in Nebraska, the preacher tells the bound Mary Margaret (whom he has crippled) that he has used her prophetic visions to track down and kill numerous mutants with special gifts. He tells her that they will be hunting Warren next.
Notes: "December twenty-fifth," probably December 25 of YEAR 1. "Three months" after ANGEL:REV 1 (1-5, 18-20).

*UX 54/2 (3:6-5)
While in his room one evening, Warren smells smoke and realizes the dormitory is on fire. He jumps from his window and uses his wings to descend to the ground. Hearing the cries of several other students trapped on an upper floor, Warren disguises himself as an angel (with a wig and nightshirt from the theater storeroom), and using a length of rope, he rescues several of the students before flying off and later reappearing as Warren.
Notes: Nighttime, green trees. OMITTX 3 places this during "April of Warren's sophomore year in high school" (although this is actually Warren's senior year, as per ANGEL:REV 2) and "about the same time that Peter [Parker] was bitten by the radioactive spider," probably April of YEAR 2. It is also probably sometime before April 19 of YEAR 2 (ANGEL:REV 4 (1-13:1). The reference to "1963" is topical. UO 3 (5-7) contradicts the account given in UX 54/2, and Dhall considers it a flawed retelling of these events. The cause of the fire is unrevealed, but it could possibly have been caused by the preacher to observe Warren in action, before starting the second fire to draw him out in ANGEL:REV 4-5. Both M/SAGA 8 and OMITTX 3 mention that due to the fire, the school was closed for "several months" and Warren moved to Manhattan to become the Avenging Angel, but this is erroneous as ANGEL:REV 5 depicts Warren graduating from the school; it is probable that only the dormitory was damaged and that Warren moved to Manhattan after graduation.

*XF 47 (8:5-8:6)-FB
While Warren is rescuing his classmates disguised as an angel, Cameron Hodge is among the students who witness this.
Notes: Same night as UX 54/2 (3:6-5), probably April of YEAR 2.

*ANGEL:REV 4 (1)
Andrew gets supplies from the theatrical department for Warren to make him look like a masked angel (for the second time, the first being UX 54/2 (3:6-5)).
Notes: Apparently early morning, still dark, green trees. Probably same day as ANGEL:REV 4 (13:1), which is probably April 19 of YEAR 2. Reynolds has been with the school for "two decades."

*ANGEL:REV 4 (2-6:4)
Warren wears a mask and confronts Father Reynolds in the chapel, claiming to be the Archangel Michael. He informs Reynolds that the only way he can avoid eternal damnation is to turn himself into the police. Reynolds confesses his crimes Father Gavin and resigns.
Notes: Apparently early morning, still dark. Probably same day as ANGEL:REV 4 (13:1), which is probably April 19 of YEAR 2.

*ANGEL:REV 4 (6:5-10)
Reynolds turns himself into the police and is taken away. As the students watch him leave, Brandon makes a negative remark about Andrew's homosexuality, which sparks a student-wide brawl instigated by the actions of Warren, Andrew, Amanda and Brandon.
Notes: Daytime, green trees. "After second period" during "this morning's... fracas." Probably same day as ANGEL:REV 4 (13:1), which is probably April 19 of YEAR 2.

In his office, Father Gavin gives Warren, Andrew, Amanda and Brandon a weekend detention.
Notes: Probably same day as ANGEL:REV 4 (13:1), which is probably April 19 of YEAR 2. The upcoming weekend is "Easter."

*ANGEL:REV 4 (12)
The preacher and Mary Margaret arrive at the school searching for Warren. Margaret tells him that Warren will be alone on Holy Saturday.
Notes: Daytime, green trees. Shortly before "Holy Saturday." Probably same day as ANGEL:REV 4 (13:1), which is probably April 19 of YEAR 2.

*ANGEL:REV 4 (13:1)
Heavy rains occur, turning the campus into a mud pit.
Notes: Overcast, possibly day or night, both barren and full trees. "April showers start on Thursday" just before Easter, which occurs on April 19 in YEAR 2.

Warren and Andrew attend services in the chapel on Good Friday.
Notes: "Good Friday," which occurs on April 20 in YEAR 2.

*ANGEL:REV 4 (13:3-22)
Most of the students leave to watch the Passion Plays at a nearby Franciscan monastery. Warren, Andrew, Amanda and Brandon are in detention under the watch of scholastic Matthew Zampelli, who leaves to investigate a strange noise. Warren hears a voice in his head, which he believes is God (but it is probably Charles Xavier), warning him that they are in danger. The building is set ablaze by the preacher, who also murders Zampelli, and Warren reveals his wings to the others. Leading them to the roof, he attempts to support all three as he flies them to safety, but their weight causes them to land in the mud, and Andrew breaks his leg. Warren looks up to see Mary Margaret and the preacher holding a rifle.
Notes: Nighttime, full moon. "Saturday night" and "a little past eight o'clock." Mary Margaret mentioned this was "Holy Saturday" in ANGEL:REV 4 (12), which occurs on April 21 in YEAR 2, and ironically the full moon of that year also occurs April 19-21. Warren hears a voice he believes to be God, but it is probably that of Charles Xavier. Zampelli had taught them English Lit "sophomore year."

*ANGEL:REV 5 (1-17)
The preacher holds a shotgun on the four students, but Mary Margaret is seemingly possessed (the glow about her would suggest by Charles Xavier) and uses her cane to deflect his shot. Brandon attacks the preacher but is knocked out, as Warren and Amanda help Andrew flee into the woods. The preacher pursues, and Warren grabs his shotgun, pulling both it and the preacher into the sky. The preacher lets go of the gun and falls into the woods to his seeming death, but his body is not found and he apparently fell into the river. As fire trucks arrive, Brandon, Andrew and Amanda promise to keep Warren's secret, and Margaret tells Warren to return to his room as the world is not yet ready for his appearance. They tell the police what happened, but neglect to mention Warren and Margaret's powers.
Notes: Nighttime, full trees, full moon. Same night as ANGEL:REV 4 (13:3-22), which probably occurs on April 21 in YEAR 2. Warren started growing his wings "seven months ago," which would be September of YEAR 1. When Margaret was physically possessed, it was apparently by Charles Xavier.

*ANGEL:REV 5 (18-19)
Warren looks at a picture sent to him by Mary Margaret, now living with a foster family in New Hampshire. The picture is of the X-Men (Professor X, Cyclops, beast, Iceman and Angel), but Warren doesn't know what it means. He talks to Andrew (in a cast) and tells him that he does not think the voice in his head was God, but someone else.
Notes: Daytime, green trees. "A few weeks" after ANGEL:REV 5 (1-17), probably May or June of YEAR 2.

*ANGEL:REV 5 (20-21)
During graduation ceremonies, Warren receives his diploma from Father Gavin. Both Andrew and Warren's parents are present, and Brandon and Amanda also graduate.
Notes: Daytime, green grass and trees. As this is graduation day, it is probably June of YEAR 2. Andrew has "two more years" at the school.

*UX 55/2 (4:1-4:3)-FB
Warren rents an apartment in Manhattan, experiments with a gas gun, and practices flying, becoming the Avenging Angel.
Notes: OMITTX 3 places this "in the fall of Peter Parker's junior year in high school," or Autumn of YEAR 2 (MCAL).

NOTE: I have submitted two possible versions of Angel's early chronology. The first one segregates every individual flashback scene, the second is a more streamlined version that groups sequential appearances from the same issue together. I really wonder about if/how this miniseries fits with Cameron Hodge's history, if it does. It's not reflected in the MCP listings because it's mostly been told rather than shown, but Hodge's history with Angel is apparently extensive from both their accounts (not just the Handbook), and from what I've heard, this mini seems to ignore that at best - including by giving him a different roommate for his whole time at school.

Extensive but somewhat inconsistent. In "X-Factor" vol. 1 #1 (February, 1986) they are former "college roommates". I would this to be a reference to Warren attending the University of California, Los Angeles in "Champions". In "X-Factor" #34 (November, 1988), it is established that Cameron knew Warren before the later got his wings. Also N'astirh suspects that Cameron "worshiped" and "loved" Warren at some point. That same issue, Warren claims the two grew up together and Cameron admits to following him around like a puppy. "I worshiped you, Warren! You were all I ever wanted to be!And then you grew wings and flew away and left me behind in the dust!". Suggesting a relationship that goes a bit deeper in time.

Uh oh. These X-Factor #47 page ranges count ad pages. "Page 5" is fine, but "page 8" should be page 6. And it looks like that boo-boo made it into the MCP listings.

I haven't checked if any of the other issues quoted here count ad pages too -- but it seems likely.

It's been awhile since I looked at it, but dosen't Angel: Revelations take place during his senior year of high school, or a semester. Isn't puting it between 54/2 and 55/2 seem the easiest fit. I'll have to pull it out, but I thought his wings had already grown and he was hiding them. I know there was the "He saved kids from a fire" in both, but under pretty different circumstances. Like I said, I'm not looking at them right now and I'm by no means criticizing anyones hard work.
