NOVA: ORIGIN OF RICHARD RIDER
Writers: Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning (hereafter "DnA"), with reprints by Marv Wolfman
Art: Geraldo Burges, with reprints by John and Sal Buscema

Not quite sure if the reprints are /stories in their own right, or just -FBs (with no new material, natch) within the story. For simplicity, I'm treating them as FBs (if you prefer that they are "stories", then break the listing up into consecutive NO:ORR/1, /3 and /5 listings).

Cast:
NOVA/RICHARD RIDER
XANDARIAN WORLDMIND

Summary:

pg1-4
"Orbital Gas Refinery, Ymir Gas Giant, Utgard System"

A storm has damaged the refinery's computer, causing the robot drones to run amok, and Nova's been called in. Apparently having "neutralised them", Nova takes a moment to "smile and wave", and has his arm grabbed by a robot they missed. He disposes of it, but as he leaves, the Worldmind tells him that his suit and collar bone have been damaged, and he should rest. Rich is too busy beating himself up over his mistake, and tells the Worldmind to just run the heal/repair while they stargate to the next emergency.

Worldmind tells him that'll make the journey take longer, and he says he needs time to think anyway. WM suggests it would be a good idea to use the extra time to look back at how far he's come, and Rich tells him to play the holo-file...

pg5-21
Reprint of NO 1 (with new colouring).

pg22
[In stargate transit]

As the "Holo-file ends", the WM tries to reassure Rich, saying his injury's just depressing him. This leads into a holo-file where he met Thor.

pg23-39
Reprint of NO 4 (with new colouring).

pg40
[Leaving stargate]

Rich is feeling better, and Worldmind says that he's a hero of the first rank, and proud of him.

They get to work, with Nova flying down to the unnamed planet below and zapping some very Kirby-like monsters.

Continuity notes:

The writers have told us that the framing sequence takes place shortly before the Galactus story (NO4 13-15), and it's what I would have concluded myself anyway, since that's the nearest spot in publication order where the Nova/Worldmind status quo matches this one. Ergo,...

NB: Worldmind is not currently in the MCP. The first appearance and other bits of listings are based on my Nova v4 #13-19 analysis and my "Xandarian Worldmind, Protector III, Adora" thread in MU (last post Aug 08)

If the framing sequence is treated as three separate stories, Worldmind is -VO in /1 and /5, and on-panel (as a holo-head) in /3.

Other notes:

For once they didn't stick a pointless #1 in the indicia title of a one-shot. Yay!

The issue also includes a Handbook entry for Nova, which misreads NO4 18 to assume that Worldmind empowered the five new Centurions then and there, rather than between NO4 12 and 13 (as is explained in #19). And I'm not entirely sure about their reading of the NO4 17 ending either...
