Chronology Review - World War Hulk Aftersmash: Warbound #1-5

World War Hulk: Warbound #1-5
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Leonard Kirk and Rafa Sandoval

I know that Paul doesn't have this mini-series on his list of requests for analysis, but as it contains several key flashbacks to events on Sakaar, I felt that I needed to go through this before tackling "Skaar: Son of Hulk", (which is in progress, and will be posted soon).

Warbound #1
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Leonard Kirk

Appearances:
Thing, Luke Cage, Goliath IV, Korg, No-Name, Hiroim, Elloe Kaifi, and Kate Waynesboro, and the Leader.

Synopsis: It is “2 weeks” after the end of World War Hulk #5. Dr. Katherine Waynesboro and SHIELD are working on tracking down the remaining “Warbound” fugitives, (including Korg, Hiroim, Elloe Kaifi, and No-Name of the Brood). She and some SHIELD agents come across them in the sewers, just in time for the Warbound to save them from some sewer alligators.

Elloe is still recovering from the wound she received in the “World War Hulk: Aftersmash” one-shot. Dr. Waynesboro tries to arrest them, but seeing she is outclassed, she starts to treat Elloe’s wounds. Just as more SHIELD agents arrive, a teleportation beam zaps all of the main cast away to the American Southwest. The beam was meant for Hiroim, who is teleported into a prison run by the Leader. The others are teleported to the desert outside of the Leader’s hideout. The Leader hooks Hiroim up to a machine which siphons off his “Old Power”, using it to erect a gamma powered forcefield around a large portion of the American Southwest. Our heroes are now trapped inside this forcefield, which the Leader dubs as being the new “Gammaworld”.

References: The first panel shows random superheroes in the background fixing up NYC. We see the Thing, Luke Cage, and Tom Foster, aka the new “Black Goliath” (except it appears he’s going to just be called “Goliath”, making him Goliath IV for MCP purposes).

In this first panel, one of the SHIELD soldiers comments, “It’s been two weeks since the Hulk went down, Dr. Waynesboro”. So this is 2 weeks after the end of “World War Hulk”.

Warbound #1/2
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Rafa Sandoval

Appearances:
In present day: Dum Dum Dugan, (is this confirmed to be Skrull Dugan)?, Kate Waynesboro and Miek. In flashback: Miek and Elloe Kaifi.

Synopsis: Narrative caption reads, “Two Weeks Ago”. So this is “2 weeks” before the first story from Issue #1. Seeing as the first story from this issue was “2 weeks” after the end of World War Hulk, then the events of this second story must follow shortly on the heels of World War Hulk #5.

Dum Dum Dugan meets up with Kate Waynesboro and orders her to interrogate the captured Miek, (so that they can learn the weaknesses of the Warbound). Miek states that through time spent around the other Warbound, his “chemming” power has revealed all sorts of secrets of the Warbound. He starts by relaying a story of a young Elloe Kaifi…

Issue #1/2: FB- This is a flashback to Elloe Kaifi’s childhood. Elloe, (as a young Imperial noble) knows that power and status are the only things that matter on Planet Sakaar. Seeing the capture of “Natives” (the bug creatures, of which Miek is a member) as a way to gain notoriety, she releases an already captured hiveling, (claiming she wants to set him free). The hiveling leads her back to a hidden nest of Natives. She alerts the Imperials who come in and arrest all of the Natives, and is praised for her efforts.

The natives feel they were betrayed not just by Elloe, but by the hiveling who led them here. They brand the hiveling a traitor. It’s not outright stated, but it’s strongly hinted that this hiveling is a young Miek, (whom we know from the start of the “Planet Hulk” arc is an “unhived” Native, (a Native who doesn’t belong to any hive).

References: Pg. 3 of 2nd story: Kate Waynesboro says, (in regards to Elloe): “After the Hulk’s followers started killing each other in the streets of New York, she threw herself on their spears to stop the bloodshed”. This is a reference to the “World War Hulk: Aftersmash” one-shot. So these flashbacks occur after the “Aftersmash” one-shot.

Also: I'm unclear on at what point that Dum Dum Dugan was replaced by a Skrull. Is it confirmed that the Dugan we see here in this issue is a Skrull? Either way, Dugan or Skrull Dugan deserves an entry onto their MCP listing...

Warbound #2
Written by Greg Pak
Artwork by Leonard Kirk

Appearances:
Korg, Hiroim, No-Name, Elloe Kaifi, Kate Waynesboro, the Leader, and new supervillain: “Horde”.

Synopsis: pgs 1-3: FB- Narrative Captain reads, “Stoneridge, New Mexico. Two minutes ago.” A group of residents of a low income part of town are being evicted by the local sheriff. Suddenly the walls of the “Gammaworld” forcefield blast through town, tearing it in half. A new monster named “Horde” appears and attacks the sheriff! (it’s a creature that is a combination of several residents fused together by the gamma energy and driven mad by the transformation).

Pgs. 4-18: Picks up right where we left off last issue. The Leader taunts the Warbound and teleports away. The Warbound are subsequently attacked by local army troops, until the Warbound convince them to work with them to save lives. Though they can’t figure out how to shut down the Gammaworld forcefield completely, Kate helps Hiroim figure out how to use his powers to open a hole in the forcefield, through which residents of the town begin to evacuate. But just then, the Horde creature attacks…

References: Pg. 1: The leader of the people being evicted says, “We stuck around after the bomb testing poisoned the groundwater. We stuck around after that Hulk rampage tore this town to shred. We even stuck around after you got your backstabbing ass elected sheriff.” I’m not sure if this is a reference to a previously seen Hulk rampage or not.

Warbound #2/2

Artwork by Rafa Sandoval

Appearances:
In present day: Kate Waynesboro and Miek. In flashback, we have Hiroim and Angmo I, (the “Red King’s” father).

Synopsis: Still “Two Weeks Ago”, according to narrative caption. Kate continues her interrogation, and Miek relays the story of why Hiroim was outcast from his people.

Issue #2/2: FB- Hiroim is shown fighting in the first Spike War in defense of his people. Fearing they can’t win the war alone, his elders strike a truce with Angmo the 1st, a warlord of the Imperials, (who eventually unites most of Sakaar under his rule). Hiroim is made “Warbound” to Angmo, effectively making Hiroim his personal bodyguard. Together, they defeat the Spikes in the first Spike Wars.

At the end of the war, Angmo sends Hiroim to kill his son, Angmo II, (who’s just a child – but Angmo doesn’t want any contenders for the throne). Hiroim sneaks into the boy’s quarters and raises his blade, but is unable to strike. He leaves in exile instead. Angmo II eventually grows up to become the “Red King”, a scourge among his people.

References: Pg 5, panels 4 and 5, of the 2nd story flips back to the present day, (where the story ended at pg. 18 of this comic), but it mirrors panels from the earlier story, (showing Horde rampaging towards Hiroim and the others), so there is no new material here.

Also, the flashback told here, in regards to why Hiroim is called “Hiroim the Shamed” among his people tells a different story than what we’ve been told previously. In H3 #100, we saw a flashback to Hiroim’s training in a Shadow Temple as a youth. There, on the day of his initiation as a shadow priest, he was deemed blasphemous for thinking himself to be the “Sakaarson”, the legendary savior of Sakaar.

Now in this story, we are told he is separated from his other Shadow people because he disobeyed King Angmo’s orders for him to kill his son, (which could’ve caused a fallout between the Imperials and the Shadow People). I decided that both incidents occurred: he did a blasphemous deed on his day of Initiation at his temple, but wasn’t kicked out. Instead, he later was exiled for breaking the pact with King Angmo.

Warbound #3
Written by Greg Pak
Artwork by Leonard Kirk

Appearances:
Korg, Hiroim, No-Name, Elloe Kaifi, Kate Waynesboro, the Leader, and Horde

Synopsis: Continues right from where we left off last issue. The Warbound manage to beat back Horde, but then the army arrives. The army fires at the Warbound, causing Hiriom to loose his concentration. The tunnel he created to escape Gamma World collapses, killing the last few civilians trying to escape.

Hiroim tells Kate, No-Name, and Elloe to go attack the Leader while he and Korg try to tear down the Gamma World dome. While the others are off fighting the Leader, Hiroim reveals to Korg that to bring down the Gamma Dome, Korg must kill Hiroim, (who’s powers are now tied in with the Gamma Dome)!

References:

The Leader says, (about Horde), “His name is Horacio Carrenas. And Elmira Phillips and Joe Famiglia and Floyd Henderson and a dog named Bacon, among others. But I just call him Horde.”

So if you potentially wanted to list the “real name” of Horde in his MCP listing, you’d have to use all of those names…

We are told that the Leader is sick, and is using the radiation from this new Gamma World to heal himself.

I’m not sure how this connects with the Leader’s resurrection in the pages of She-Hulk vol. 4 and in Bruce Jones’ run on the Hulk a few years back, (wherein the Leader was a giant brain in a jar).

Warbound #3/2
Written by Greg Pak
Artwork by Rafa Sandoval

Appearances:
In present day: Kate Waynesboro and Miek. In flashback, we have Korg.

Synopsis: Still “Two Weeks Ago”. Continues right where we left off last issue. Kate continues her interrogation, and Miek relates a tale about what happened to Korg when he first came to Sakaar.

Warbound #3/2: FB- Upon Korg’s ship crashlanding on Sakaar, he flees into the mountains, believing himself to be the only survivor of the Kronan fleet. He stumbles upon a mountain village and saves a peasant girl from being raped by Imperial soldiers. He retreats into the mountains, but the girl and her brother Arkis begin to worship Korg as the “Mountain God”.

Over the course of the next Summer through Winter, Korg defends the village from natural disasters and from armies. During a battle in the winter, though, Korg finds himself having mortally wounded Arkis, (Arkis had been captured by the Imperials and had a slave disk placed upon him. Arkis was fighting against his own village against his will).

Seeing what he had done, Korg leaves the village in sadness.

References: None, really.

Warbound #4
Written by Greg Pak
Artwork by Leonard Kirk

Appearances:
Korg, Hiroim, No-Name, Elloe Kaifi, Kate Waynesboro, and the Leader.

Synopsis: Korg and Hiriom fight each other, with Hiriom trying to convince Korg to kill him, (to get rid of the Gamma Dome). Meanwhile, the others engage the Leader in battle...but when they realize that Korg and Hiroim are fighting, they rush to stop them from killing each other.

Finally, Korg delivers the killing blow…only for Hiroim to regenerate from the damage, (it seems the “Old Power” somehow kept him alive).. For a few seconds, the Gamma Dome fades away…which gives the army enough time to launch a “Robot Death Squad” to attack the Warbound!

References:

Pg. 7: The Leader, (in explaining his motives behind creating the Gamma Dome), says, “All of the transformations and resurrections and indignities this poor body’s sustained over the years have taken their toll”. As he says this, we see on a computer monitor a screen of all of the various versions of the Leader from throughout the years, including the “giant head in a jar” from Hulk vol. 3 #75-76, (thus lending credit to the notion that Bruce Jones’ run on the Hulk DID actually happen, and wasn’t all just a dream, as Peter David seemed to hint at).

Warbound #4/2
Written by Greg Pak
Artwork by Rafa Sandoval

Appearances:
In present day: Kate Waynesboro and Miek. In flashback, we see No-Name.

Synopsis: Still “Two Weeks Ago”. Continues right where we left off last issue. Kate continues her interrogation, and Miek relates a tale about what happened to No-Name shortly after the Hulk killed the Red King on Sakaar.

Pg. 1 of the 2nd story, Panels 3 and 4: This is a flashback to the Brood attacking creatures on another world. The narrative given by Miek indicates we are seeing No-Name among these Brood attacking. So this is a flashback to earlier in No-Name’s life, before she came to Sakaar.

Pg. 2 of the 2nd story is panels that we’ve seen before during the course of Planet Hulk, so there’s no new info here.

Pgs. 3-5p2-FB: This part is new flashback material that occurred around H3 104, (since No-Name didn’t appear in that issue, this fits in nicely). While the other Warbound and the Hulk are out cleaning up Crown City, No-Name goes off to give birth in private, (this is the apparently the first batch of “hybrids” that she gave birth to). The hybrid babies are mindless savages, and start to attack a nearby Imperial child, but No-Name chooses to slay her babies rather than let them feast on her adopted children, (the Imperial children left orphans).

References: The hybrids seen here are the same type we see in the company of Skaar in the pages of “Skaar: Son of Hulk”. Apparently some of the hybrids escaped No-Name’s wrath and wandered the countryside in the wake of the destruction of Crown City.

Warbound #5
Written by Greg Pak
Artwork by Leonard Kirk

Appearances:
Korg, Hiroim, No-Name, Elloe Kaifi, Kate Waynesboro, Horde, and the Leader.

Synopsis: Pg. 1 and 2: FB- Narrative caption reads, “2 Weeks Ago”. Here we see Kate Waynesboro wrap up her interrogation of Miek. Miek taunts her realizing that she wants to save the Warbound, not capture them.

Pg. 3-22: The Warbound manage to destroy the Deathbots sent in by the army. Hiroim and the Leader do battle, with the Leader momentarily claiming Hiroim’s “old power” for himself, but Hiroim transfers the Old Power to Kate Waynesboro instead, (and sacrificing his life in the process).

The Leader sees he’s outmatched and teleports away. The mini-series ends with the remaining civilians inside the Gamma Dome being attacked by monsters created by the Leader’s radiation, and with the Warbound rushing to defend the civilians, (with Kate now a part of their ranks). An abrupt ending, to say the least. Note: “Horde” is seen among the civilians here at the end, (it looks like “he” has regained his sanity, and is joining the civilians in being wary of the Warbound).

References: Pg. 1 and 2: There are several flashback panels showing events from old Hulk issues, (issues which I don’t own) showing Kate’s previous relationship with the Hulk. As I suspect all of this is detailed in Kate’s existing MCP chronology, I don’t believe there’s any new material here.

Yuppers. Dum Dum was replaced very shortly after Captain America was killed, World War Hulk follows that, so Skrull-icious Dum Dum appears here. :)
