The Age of The Sentry

Post by Somebody »

THE AGE OF THE SENTRY #1-6
Writers: Jeff Parker, Paul Tobin
Art: Various

Right, the results are finally in, and the framing sequence appears to be the only "real" part - I do wonder about bits of it [especially #6, since the disclaimers in that issue verge on the doth-protest-too-much], but as the comic itself notes, there's lots of discontinuities both major and minor throughout mixed in with the "true" stuff, and there's no real way to pick it out.

[Just to hope now that Cranio and Harrison Oogar make it into the modern MU :)]

AGESENTRY 1/1
App: Reed Richards, Franklin Richards

Franklin wants Reed to tell him a bedtime story, one about the Sentry - and to tell it like a comic book.

AGESENTRY 2/2
App: Reed Richards, Franklin Richards

Having told Franklin about the Sentry and Sentress vs. Cranio and Ursus the Ultra-Bear, Reed picks up the Sentry Omnibus he's been reading out and prepares to go, but has to pick another story from it at Franklin's demand...

AGESENTRY 3/2
App: Reed Richards, Franklin Richards, Sue Richards

After another story, Reed has not only failed to get Franklin to sleep, he's now fallen asleep himself. He goes to bug his mum instead, and Sue asks why he doesn't just read them himself - Franklin says that "dad was filling in lots of extra parts to make it more fun." Sue gives in, and decides to read him an old Millie the Model guest-starring Sentry.

When Franklin worries that it'll be lovey-dovey, Sue reassures him that "someone will get hit". "Oh good."

AGESENTRY 4/2
App: Reed Richards, Franklin Richards (both clearly visible for the first time)

...after telling a story about how the Sentry and his Golden Age counterpart from another world beat the Void and tricked Cranio; Reed tells Franklin that the Void oozed away. After Franklin asks what the Void's made of and Reed says Dark Matter "...except in the Void's case, I think it's actually created by, well--", then cuts himself off to tell Franklin another story.

AGESENTRY 5/4
App: Reed Richards, Franklin Richards, Sue Richards, The Thing

An absolutely exhausted Reed tails off at the end of another story. Franklin wants another story, but Sue tells him that Reed's exhausted from trying to reverse Global Warming all week - an interjection from the Thing leads her to alter this :) - and wants to know why Franklin's "Been on such a Sentry jag all week anyway".

Franklin's just trying to figure it out - the adventures don't all line up, with parts that sound real while other parts sound fake :). This leads a deranged-looking Reed to tell Franklin "THE FINAL SENTRY STORY!!!" (To Be Continued...)

AGESENTRY 6 (19:1-19:3, 19:4:1, 22)
App: Franklin Richards, Reed Richards, Sue Richards, Sentry.

Franklin's just been told how the Void drained Sentry completely, leaving only a dead shell in front of him; and he's frozen stiff. Sue isn't too happy about Reed telling a story designed to terrify Franklin, and Reed admits that "sometimes when [he uses] these fictional scenarios to posit [his] theories, [he gets] a little carried away..."

[Reed continues, describing how the Void was turned into the Sentry by his stolen energy, and this new Sentry went straight to work saving the planet from a meteor, before being greeted by Harrison Oogar & co, with Lindy Lee prepositioning him and Reed postulating that he could build him a Watchtower]

Franklin relaxes, and Reed reassures him that "none of that is real". Franklin checks that "the Sentry is still a good guy, right?", and Reed says that next he'll be doubting Santa Claus, as the Sentry himself hovers outside the window.

Continuity notes
Keeping this pre-SI would be by far the best option - I personally lean toward putting this between A4 10 and SENTRY2 1 if that could be arranged, but that's not critical and it's waaaay out of publication order - it really should go before Sentry becomes Osborn's enforcer.

Calendar notes
The framing sequence takes place over "a week" of nights - presumably, #1 is the Monday, #2 Tues, #3 Wed, #4 Thurs and #5-6 Friday. If you can find a week where the F4 aren't involved in anything significant so that Reed can spend his days in a lab, and his nights telling stories to Franklin, that would be best :)

Enda-pre-empting notes
Most of the series - excluding the framing sequnce and the future Cranio stuff - is a Silver Age DC parody. Cranio is a Brainiac homage, the Guardians of the Galaxy are twisted into a SA Legion of Super-Heroes homage, the EE stuff is a nod to Superman's LL stuff, the Golden Age Sentry is mostly based on the Golden Age Green Lantern (including visually), with a couple of Captain Marvel elements thrown in, etc.
