Tarzan #1-29, Annual #1-3 and Marvel Super-Special #29

Post by Giant Ant »

Hello to all,
I recently read the whole Marvel Tarzan serie, and since it has not been added to the MCP yet, I thought I could try to submit an analysis. Please, note that I have never read a Tarzan novel and I am not familiar with their content, so I only based my analysis on the comics' content.
I used the abbreviation TZ for Tarzan. I only listed recurring characters and animals and not the ones who only made one appearance.
Feel free to ask questions if anything is not clear enough.

So, without further ado, here is my analysis of Tarzan #1-29, Tarzan Annual #1-3 and Marvel Super-Special #29.

Giant Ant wrote:Hello to all,
I recently read the whole Marvel Tarzan serie, and since it has not been added to the MCP yet, I thought I could try to submit an analysis. Please, note that I have never read a Tarzan novel and I am not familiar with their content, so I only based my analysis on the comics' content.
That seems to be the best way to do it anyway. Just stick to what's in the comics... (and you seem to have done a very thorough analysis of the comics, I enjoyed it)
Giant Ant wrote:- At the entrance of the club, one of the conversations reads "I hear the mayor's already been here". In 1929, the New York mayor was Jimmy Walker. Is this enough for a BTS appearance? Walker already has a listing in the MCP.
I don't think so, since all it indicates is that the mayor is rumored to have been at the club at some point since it opened...
Giant Ant wrote:- Another conversation reads "Isn't that F. Scott Fitzgerald?". Fitzgerald was an author. Is this enough for a BTS?
I don't think so, since there is no confirmation that it is indeed F. Scott Fitzgerald. Is the person referred to shown on panel, and does he look like F. Scott Fitzgerald? (I assume not, because then it wouldn't be BTS at all, it would be a real appearance)

"Tarzan #2

Adaptation of Tarzan And The Jewels Of Opar pt.2
Synopsis :
Tarzan brings Werper to his home where his wife, Jane Clayton, tells their origin. Tarzan decides to travel to the land of Opar where there is a lot of gold because he needs money.

Appearances :
Nkima (small ape, Tarzan's companion)
Porter-Clayton, Jane
Tarzan (Clayton, John ; Lord Greystoke)
Werper, Albert ("Jules Frecoult")

Continuity notes :
- There is no mention of Korak, Tarzan's son in Jane's story.
- The letters page informs us that the story takes place in 1916."

Do you mean the fb to Tarzan's origin, or the main action of the story took place in 1916?

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- Lizards in a feeding pool? I'm sure I read something similar recently… Maybe in a Kull story? Does that ring a bell to anybody?
- The race of snake-men is similar to those present in Kull and Conan mythos.
- The letters page informs us that the story takes place in the late 1920s / early 1930s..

I think this serpentine race has the name Horibs. Not sure when they debuted,

Regarding Lady Greystoke's climb up the Empire State Building, that helps lock in time references. As I recall, Herbert Hoover opened up the Empire State Building in 1931. Have any of the MVL or Earth-616 references to Doc Savage (who existed on Earth-616) referenced the opening of the Empire State Building in 1931?

(Sidebar: In contrast to Conan [who as I recall had all of his original adventures by Howard adapted, and then some of the pastiches by Lin Carter et al.] the MVL adaptation of Doc Savage, Tarzan, and Doctor Fu Manchu often referenced tales from the original print source that never saw adaptation in a MVL comic. In a Doc Savage magazine, for example, someone, in dialogue, referenced John Sunlight. In the Amazing Spider-Man Index, Olshevsky mentioned he used information from the prose Savage stories to figure out Savage's Earth-616 chronology; specifically he said to use the dates of publication of the original novels where MVL Doc Savage comics adapt specific novles. I do not recall any adaptations of specific Fu Manchu novels in Master of Kung-Fu, but references to Rohmer's last Fu Manchu novel featuring Tony McKay did occur.)

Any references to how recently the public had occupied the Empire State Building before this tale?

Thanks, I worked hard on it. :)

I'm pretty sure this is supposed to be the opening night though...

No, he is not shown on-panel...

The main story... 1916 is also the year the novel was released.

There is a caption in TZ 24/2 that tells the story takes place in 1929. I forgot to note it when I wrote my original post, but I went back and edited it. There are no references to when it opened.
