AVENGERS ORIGINS: SCARLET WITCH & QUICKSILVER (January, 2012)

FLASHBACK:
Magda says goodbye to Pietro. Pietro sees Magneto looking at a photo.
SYNOPSIS:
Wanda and Pietro live as gypsies until they’re hired by some locals to tend to their barn. Weeks later, the husband tries to rape Wanda; she fights him off he calls her a witch and a mob forms. Magneto saves them from the mob. Later, Wanda and Pietro agree to join Magneto’s brotherhood because he saved their lives. Months later in Santo Marco, Quicksilver wonders if they should still be hanging out with Magneto, who is running Santo Marco like a dictator. Scarlet Witch chats with Magneto, who tells her that he used to have a daughter but she was killed by humans. Quicksilver interrupts, demanding to know why an old man like Magneto has the same hair color as him (I know, it doesn’t make much sense). Magneto takes off his helmet and is contacted by Professor X. Soon after, The X-Men fight the Brotherhood. Later, Scarlet Witch wonders to Magneto if the X-Men are the good guys because they don’t kill their enemies, while Magneto wants the Brotherhood to kill. Magneto gets angry and tries to imprison Scarlet Witch, so she and Quicksilver escape. Later, the twins discuss their options and decide to go to America, where they see Spider-Man fighting the Scorpion. They decide to join the Avengers because that group doesn’t have anything to do with humans vs. mutants. Later, the new Avengers are introduced to the press.

NOTE:
Pietro mentions he vaguely recalls being in suspended animation. Yay!

Wanda and Pietro escaping the Brotherhood can’t be the time they actually leave the group; that happens when the Stranger takes Magneto away in UX 11. This must be one of several escape attempts, as hinted at in ST 128.

When Wanda and Pietro travel to America, there’s a cutaway scene of Magneto on a boat with Mastermind and Toad looking at a photo of himself, Magda and Anya. This can’t be happening while Wanda and Pietro are travelling to America, because Magneto and Toad are in space with the Stranger at this point. It must be a flashback that occurs earlier.

The group shot of the new Avengers also includes Giant-Man, Iron Man and Thor in this issue. In all other group shots of the unveiling of the new Avengers team, it’s only been Captain America, Hawkeye, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. This has to be a new scene where the old Avengers come out for a “good bye” photo. Giant-Man's in the wrong suit, but whatever.

Uhmmm... Thor was supposed to be in Asgard (attending his trial) when the new line-up was unveiled. I think it was shown in Marvel: Heroes & Legends '97.

Thor's told about the trial in JiM 115; Thor asks Odin to delay things for 48 hours, which Odin grants. In this "48 hours" Thor defeats the Absorbing Man and checks in on Jane Foster (in JiM 115). In this gap is where Thor appears in A:EMH 6 & M/H&L '97 to tell the Avengers he's leaving. The trial happens in JiM 116-119 (the Avengers appear in JiM 116 during A 16). Thor's hammer is damaged in JIM 119 and he repairs it in JIM 120; during JiM 120 is a gap to accomodate other comics. The trial happens in fairly short order, and plenty of time passes in A 16, so if we squint we can line things up so the trial ends (JiM 119) around the same time the new Avengers are revealed to the public (end of A 16). Or we can assume this is a seperate, later photo op for when Thor's available (which would still be during JiM 120; it's the first time he's available).

Yeah, the comic could have done a better job at pointing out to the reader but not the characters that Magneto is the twins' father, but that's something that's been revealed for thirty years; it's not like it's a secret to us anymore. It's clunky and heavy-handed here, but it's not like this issue has Wanda and Pietro figuring it out before they join the Avengers.

Yes, Magneto blames Pietro that Xavier found them ONLY BECAUSE Pietro made Magneto take off his helmet, but as UX 4 shows, that's not exactly the case.

I'm not worried about the sloppy use of Iceman's powers or Toad's tongue; they're not details that affect this story. Are they unfortunate? Yeah. Are they canon-busters? No, I don't think so.

The other points are either addressed in the original thread or above.

No, it's not a perfect fit, but we've made more difficult things fit.

No, i just thought about it and thought it would be helpful. I didn't realize it was already in the project. I can only fight one running battle against you guys at one time.

Though I thought I did see a "/2" behind the entry. Didn't the highlighted characters "Magik, Scarlet Witch, ect... stories appear in the first part of the issue rather than the second? I'll re-look.
