MARVEL GRAPHIC NOVEL: WOLFPACK (1987)

FLASHBACK:
While in the military overseas, Mr. Mack learns about the Nine and martial arts. Later, he trains Slippery Sam.
SYNOPSIS:
Rafael gets into a fight in school with Lamarr, but it’s broken up by Slag and Slippery Sam. The Dean of the school stops by to see what’s going on but no one admits to fighting. Rafael and Sam visit Sharon at the burger joint. On the way home, Rafael and Sam see that Sam’s dad’s hardware store has been robbed and Sam’s dad has been injured by Lamarr. Rafael goes home, then visits Mr. Mack, who has been training Rafael how to fight. Mr. Mack tells Rafael about the Nine, a group that wants to spread evil and chaos, then shows Rafael that all of his friends are also being trained by him. Later, the hardware store is set on fire and Lamarr has been beaten up by Sam, who saw Lamarr set the fire. Melvin Crenshaw, a lawyer who works for the Nine, helps Lamarr sue Sam for assault. Sam is arrested. While Sam is in jail, the rest of the group sees a drunk driver run over two young girls, so they chase him down so he can be arrested. Crenshaw shows Lamarr his Nine headquarters and brands him. Sam breaks out of jail and visits his dad in the hospital, then breaks back into jail. Crenshaw has some assassins kill Mr. Mack. When the assassins go after Sam in jail, his friends help him break back out. Upset that Sam got away, Lamarr tries to set fire to Rafael’s apartment building, but the ghost of Mr. Mack scares him and Lamarr sets himself on fire. The group decides to become the Wolfpack to fight the Nine.

FLASHBACK:
Mr. Mack trains the Wolfpack.
SYNOPSIS:
Kids are dying from crack overdoses in school, so the Wolfpack investigates. They track a drug dealer to his supplier, who lives in the suburbs. The supplier thinks the Wolfpack is a rival dealer, so he blows up his own house. Later, the Wolfpack learns that a student is selling laced crack to kill drug using students, so that other students will stop smoking crack.

WOLFPACK #2 (September, 1988)

SYNOPSIS:
Wheels’ dad is killed at work by some teenage robbers. After the funeral, Wheels investigates on his own and stops the teens from killing someone else. Wheels stops himself from killing the teens, but when one of them tries to kill Wheels, the backfire form the gun knocks the kid onto the subway tracks and he’s run over by a train.

WOLFPACK #3 (October, 1988)

SYNOPSIS:
There’s a three-way gang war in the streets, so the Wolfpack decides to do something about it. Meanwhile, Slag’s neighbor Malcolm tries to run away from home because he has abusive parents. Slag’s mom refuses to harbor Malcolm, because she could get arrested for kidnapping, and Malcolm is returned to his parents. Malcolm runs away again, so Slag drops him off at Sharon’s place. Melvin Crenshaw supplies one gang with guns, so they can kill the other gangs. The Wolfpack disarms most of the gang members, but the last one arrives in the park and is ambushed by the police.

WOLFPACK #4 (November, 1988)

SYNOPSIS:
Gang members are stealing welfare checks, so the Wolfpack investigates. Rafael knows one of the gang members, Ice, and feels bad about putting him back in jail. Ice gives the money he made from the stolen checks to Overlord, in the hopes to be admitted to the Nine. The Wolfpack, having followed Ice, ambushes the meeting and battles Overlord. When the police arrive Overlord escapes.

WOLFPACK #5 (December, 1988)

SYNOPSIS:
The Wolfpack goes to a party and is dismayed to see there are drugs there. Slag gets a new girlfriend ad later, Rafael learns his brother Junior is selling crack. Overlord meets with Crenshaw and vows to take care of the Wolfpack. Malcolm’s parents arrive at Sharon’s place and Malcolm is returned to them. One of Junior’s friends dies from a crack overdose and Junior quits selling crack. Overlord finds the Wolfpack, but he’s defeated.

WOLFPACK #6 (January, 1989)

SYNOPSIS:
The Wolfpack find Malcolm beat up and chained to his bed, so they take him back to Sharon’s place. Meanwhile, four costumed criminals hide their money in an abandoned house. Slag finds Malcolm’s mom in a bar and tells her to go to a rehab clinic. Slag’s mom, who works at Crenshaw’s law offices, gets a promotion. Malcolm and his friends explore the abandoned house, thinking it’s haunted. The criminals almost kill the kids, but they’re stopped by the Wolfpack. Slag sees Mr. Mack’s ghost and the police arrest the criminals.

SYNOPSIS:
Rafael learns that his father is back in town, and that he’s a member of the Nine. Meanwhile, Crenshaw tells Apollo (Rafael’s dad) to take care of the Wolfpack. Apollo and Rafael fight, and when Apollo threatens to kill Slippery Sam, Rafael kills Apollo. Later, Rafael learns that Apollo’s will left Rafael a bunch of drug money.

WOLFPACK #8 (March, 1989)

SYNOPSIS:
Crenshaw hires the Missionary to kill the Wolfpack. Rafael listens to his father’s will and spends a bunch of the money on his siblings. He’s so distracted with all of the new money he has, he misses a meeting with Sharon, and she’s shot by the Missionary. The Missionary changes his mind about the assignment and kills all of Crenshaw’s associates. The Wolfpack arrives and stops Missionary from killing Crenshaw, because Crenshaw’s the only person who could stop a gang war from erupting. Missionary kills himself. Sharon will live, but she might be paralyzed.

WOLFPACK #9 (April, 1989)

SYNOPSIS:
With a void in the gang world, the Imperial Spartans plan to take control for themselves. The Wolfpack breaks up their meeting, but the Spartans escape. Crenshaw meets with the Wolfpack and asks for their help to stop a gang war from breaking out. The Wolfpack agrees. The Wolfpack attacks the Imperial Spartans and defeats them; the Spartans are arrested. Later, Crenshaw thanks the Wolfpack for their help; he now has new lieutenants in town and he can handle things from here. The Wolfpack vows to defeat Crenshaw and dismantle the Nine. Later, the Wolfpack learns that Sharon’s not paralyzed. Later, imitating the Imperial Spartans, Malcolm forms his own gang, the Junior Spartans.

WOLFPACK #10 (May, 1989)

SYNOPSIS:
Cop-killer Christian is released from prison and starts up a new gang. When one of the members tries to quit Christian cuts out the kid’s tongue. Slippery Sam rescues the kid from being killed, but is shot by Christian and dies. Christian is arrested, but released the next day because there’s no evidence. Inspector Cassidy tells the Wolfpack to take care of Christian, so they kill him. Later, the Wolfpack goes to Sam’s funeral.

WOLFPACK #11 (June, 1989)

FLASHBACK:
After his apparent suicide, the Missionary checked into a rehab center to get off the crack.
SYNOPSIS:
The Nine holds a meeting and decides the Wolfpack are costing them too much money, so they send nine assassins after them. When the assassins attack, they’re shot by an unseen helper; some of the assassins are killed. When the Wolfpack regroup, they find out it’s the Missionary, who’s not really dead. He offers to finish their training so they can defeat the Nine. Meanwhile, the head of the Nine has Crenshaw killed for failing to defeat the Wolfpack. The Wolfpack finish their training and plan to attack the Nine at their South Bronx headquarters.

WOLFPACK #12 (July, 1989)

SYNOPSIS:
The Wolfpack attack a meeting place of the assassins, and after a battle, capture or kill all but one. Rafael follows the remaining assassin to the Nine’s corporate headquarters where he learns the last assassin is the head of the Nine’s son. They offer Rafael a place in the Nine as a boss, but he refuses. The Wolfpack and Missionary arrive and save Rafael, and the assassin commits suicide. The Wolfpack destroys the Nine’s computer systems. Later, Missionary leaves to start a training center in Detroit and the Wolfpack stays in the Bronx to keep fighting drugs.
