by Chris McCarver
Unfortunately, ASMU2 15’s not on Unlimited, so I’ll have to hand that one off.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #1 (March 2004)

1st Story: “Human Interest” (Joseph Goodrich/Takeshi Miyazawa/Dave Sharpe/Brian Reber)

Featured Characters: Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist (Rand), J. Jonah Jameson (BTS, sent Ben and Peter on their assignment), Spider-Man (Parker), Ben Urich
Other Characters: Marco the Marvelous (stage magician), Stella Davis (withdrawn terminally ill child, dies) and her parents Jim and Annie Davis, Dr. Desai (Derleth House physician), Derleth House residents, parents, and staff, priest
In Brief: Peter Parker and Ben Urich go to a home for terminal children and meet Stella, a leukemia-stricken girl who refuses to speak. Seeing that she’s a Spider-Man fan, Pete shows back up late that night as Spidey and takes Stella out for a swing, and even treats her to watching him foil a staged robbery committed by a disguised Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. The “robbery” succeeds in getting Stella to speak, when she warns Spidey that Cage has the drop on him. Back at the home, Spidey learns Stella’s afraid to speak for fear of making her parents sadder about her situation. He assures her that her parents love her and would only be sad from not hearing her voice. Weeks later, Stella succumbs to her illness, and, at Stella’s funeral, her parents tell Peter that she regained her voice in her final days.
Flashback: Following her night out with Spidey, a happier Stella spends time with her parents.
Personal Note: I know this is a bit derivative of “The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man,” but DAMN, did this story choke me up.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey, just have to extrapolate for everyone else.

2nd Story: “Slyde into Destiny?” (Brian Lynch/Sean Chen/Sandu Florea/Dave Sharpe/Avalon Studios’ Ian Hannin)

Feature Characters: Slyde (Jalome Beacher), Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Slyde’s henchmen, police, TV reporter and cameraman, several other characters in fabricated flashbacks including Captain America, the Hulk, and Slyde’s parents
In Brief: Spidey VERY handily foils a bank robbery perpetrated by an overconfident and way-outmatched Slyde.
Flashback: Jalome Beacher tests the non-stick coating on a frying pan. Looking at ASM 272, this is a direct pull from a panel from the same issue. RFB.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey, just have to extrapolate for Slyde.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #2 (May 2004)

1st Story: “Tests” (Adam Higgs/Rick Mays/Dave Sharpe/Dean White)

Feature Character: Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Peter’s students including Jordan, window washer and his niece, office employees, paramedics, bystanders
In Brief: Spidey grades papers on the side of a building, but drops them to save a falling window washer. He collects the bulk of them but has to chase the rest down, one of them into a landfill.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey.

2nd Story: “Making Contributions” (J.T. Krul/Paul Azaceta/Scott Koblish/Dave Sharpe/Frank D’Armata)

Feature Characters: Rhino (Sytsevich), Spider-Man (Parker), Mary Jane Watson-Parker
Other Characters: Matt (actor), Robert (director), Marcie Johnson (publicist), Eddy Camdem (Access Hollywood reporter), Karl (chauffeur), film crew, fans, TV reporter
In Brief: Mary Jane returns home from a B-movie shoot, learning of a battle between Spidey and the Rhino. Pete arrives home, she expresses worry, Pete assures her, things are okay, cue the 70s music.
Flashback: (TV footage) Spidey battles and defeats the Rhino.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey and MJ. Have to extrapolate for Rhino.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #3 (July 2004)

1st Story: “Preventative Medicine” (Tom McLaughlin/Scott Kolins/Dave Sharpe)

Feature Characters: Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Mike (young New Yorker), boutique employee, pawn broker, multiple characters in Mike’s thoughts including Spider-Man, police officers, the boutique employee
In Brief: A young New Yorker named Mike, smitten with a girl who works at a boutique considers robbing a pawnshop for money to buy a jacket that the girl thought he’d look good in in order to impress her. He imagines robbing the place, then being caught by Spider-Man and arrested. He has second thoughts and, seeing a help wanted sign at the boutique, asks the girl about the job opening.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey (who actually appears in the story apart from Mike’s daydream).

2nd Story: “6th: A Spider-Man Short” (Brandon Thomas/Ale Garza/Sean Parsons/Dave Sharpe/Chris Walker)

Feature Characters: Spider-Man (Parker), Vulture (Toomes)
Other Characters: New Yorkers, floral shop owner, homeless guy
In Brief: Peter is interrupted from buying flowers for the Bugle’s copy editor, who was fatally run over by a bus, to take down the Vulture.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey. Just need to extrapolate for Vulture.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #4 (September 2004)

1st Story: “Love Withdrawal” (Robert Kirkman/Cory Walker/Scott Hanna/Dave Sharpe/Bill Crabtree)

Feature Characters: Masterblaster, Powerhouse (mutant), Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: New Yorkers, police, bank employees and staff
In Brief: Powerhouse gains a stalker in the form of a nebbishy bank customer who fell for her at first sight.
Flashback: Spider-Man foils a bank robbery committed by Powerhouse and Masterblaster. The bank customer is instantly smitten with Powerhouse.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey and Powerhouse. Just need to add Masterblaster.

2nd Story: “The Old Ways” (Allan Jacobsen/C.P. Smith/Dave Sharpe/Chris Walker)

Feature Characters: Spider-Man (Parker, in fb only)
Other Characters: Joseph Waking-Bear (doctor, also in fb), Caroline and Michael (parents of a baby Waking-Bear treated for bronchitis), Thomas Mitford (Valley Presbyterian Hospital headhunter) and his female associate, Mrs. Goodman-Westlake (potential patient, in fb), Mr. Westlake (Mrs. Goodman-Westlake’s husband, in fb), Alfonso Erdoes (superhuman father of a boy Waking-Bear refused to treat for financial reasons, in fb)
In Brief: Joseph Waking-Bear refuses an offer to join the staff of a hospital in favor of life as a community doctor working out of an Airstream trailer. He invokes advice given by Spider-Man, who he considers the avatar of Iktomi the Trickster, a figure of Lakota Indian myth.
Flashback: Years ago, Waking-Bear, then a high-priced materialistic doctor, is attacked by Alfonso Erdoes, who’s son died because Waking-Bear refuses to treat him since Erdoes couldn’t afford his fees. He’s saved by Spider-Man, who confesses his shame and has a spiritual epiphany.
Analysis: This one’s not in brackets, nor is the flashback on the Calendar. There aren’t a lot of clues as to where this takes place. If no one objects, I’ll place the flashback before Spider-Man’s earliest appearance on the Calendar, namely the story arc in TW 5-6.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #5 (November 2004)

1st Story: “Retraction” (Kim Howard Johnson/Staz Johnson/Wayne Faucher & Roland Paris/Dave Sharpe/Robert Schwager)

Feature Characters: Betty Brant, J. Jonah Jameson Jr., Joe Robertson, Spider-Man (Parker), Ben Urich
Additional Characters: John Murray (suspected armed robber vilified by the Bugle), James Murray (John’s son), police, Bugle staffers, Robbie’s dad, police, restaurant cooks
In Brief: James Murray takes the Bugle newsroom hostage at gunpoint after the Bugle reports his father’s false arrest for armed robbery but didn’t cover his subsequent release. Pleas from his father and Robbie convince James to give himself up to police.
Flashback (3:4 - 5:4): As Spider-Man chases a robber, he drops his loot and John Murray picks it up with the intention of turning it into the police, but he’s wrongly arrested for the crime. A Bugle reporter covers the arrest, but the real robber is brought in after he leaves, too late for the reporter to have all the facts before his deadline.
Flashback (5:5): Prior to the real robber’s arrest, police find him webbed to a wall.
Flashback (8:5 - 8:6): As a child, Robbie’s dad stops him from using a gun to stop people from disrespecting him.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey. Need to add appearances for the others.

2nd Story: “Facing Down the Darkness” (Martin Sweeny/Alex Sanchez/Andrew Hennessy & Nelson DeCastro/Dave Sharpe/Chris Sotomayor)

Feature Characters: Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Rudy Cullers (bank security guard), bank robbers, bank staff, police
In Brief: A trio of bank robbers take Rudy hostage during a heist. As Spidey pursues the robbers, Rudy, locked in the trunk, reflects on his life. Spidey stops the robbers just as their car goes into the river, and barely saves Rudy from drowning. The next day, Pete checks in on Rudy at the bank and learns he took another shift so his wife could go back to college, one of the regrets he pondered while in captivity.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #6 (January 2005)

1st Story: “The Agony of Defeat” (Sheldon Allen/Jim Cheung/John Dell/Dave Sharpe/Wil Quintana)

Feature Characters: Captain America (Rogers), Iron Man (Stark), Rhino (Sytsevich), Spider-Man (Parker), Mary Jane Watson-Parker
Other Characters: New Yorkers, doctor, students, police, TV reporter
In Brief: Spidey gets his hinder publicly kicked by the Rhino and spends the next several days healing his injuries and haunted by his defeat.
Flashback: Cap and Iron Man take the Rhino into custody, and the Rhino taunts Spider-Man for his beatdown from earlier.
Analysis: In brackets for all involved except for the Rhino.

2nd Story: “Thug #1” (Scott M. Gimple/Stuart Immonen/Wade von Grawbadger/Dave Sharpe/Chris Sotomayor)

Feature Characters: Mercenary, Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Augie (down-on-his-luck thug) and his parents, Vivian (Augie’s girlfriend), armed robbers, inmates, Mercenary’s henchmen
In Brief: (1 - 4): A broke guy with minimal prospects named Augie is talked into pulling a stick-up job, but he and his friends are stopped by Spider-Man. (5): Augie’s time in prison is chronicled, where he goes from skinny “fish” to jailyard big-shot over a span of months. During that time, he learns that the Mercenary is putting together a crew to capture Spider-Man for unknown parties wanting to dissect him. (6 - 11): Upon his release, Augie throws in with the Mercenary, but learns his girlfriend moved to LA and got married after his arrest. The Mercenary and his crew, including Augie, attempt to trap Spidey, but he defeats them all, even Augie, who accidentally shoots the Mercenary during the fight.
Analysis: Though the second half of this story is in the Calendar, the earliest spot seen in it is during Augie’s jail sentence. Spidey has two listings for ASMU2 7, but that story has no time jumps, so (personal hypothesis) I’m thinking this was meant to indicate the time jump in this issue. I’m also thinking this is not the same Mercenary from IM 23, since they have different looks and different origins (orphan raised by a criminal organization vs. a US Army soldier)

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #7 (March 2005)

1st Story: “The Cubicle” (Bill Rosemann/Mike Perkins/Andrew Hennessey/Dave Sharpe/Christina Strain)

Feature Characters: Mysterio (has to be Berkhart given the timeframe), Spider-Man (Parker); in photo FB’s on a superhero fantasy league website: Captain Britain (Leigh), Moon Knight, Rhino (Sytsevich)
Other Characters: Jake (disgrunted ad copy writer), Jake’s coworkers (Jen, Chris, Amanda, Pam named), Robert (Jake’s fantasy superhero competitor, on phone)
In Brief: The hellish workday of aspiring writer/cubicle inmate Jake is interrupted when a fight between Spider-Man and Mysterio spills into his office. Jake helps defeat Mysterio with a stapler when he takes his boss hostage. Though his heroism earns his boss’ ire, an impressed female coworker takes Jake out for coffee.
Flashback (4:2): Captain Britain defeats Rhino.
Flashback (4:3): Moon Knight is photographed on a rooftop.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey. Need to add appearances for the others.

2nd Story: “Hang Tight” (Matthew K. Manning/Karl Moline/Dave Sharpe/Nick Bell)

Feature Characters: Shocker (presumably Schultz, BTS, caused the explosion), Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Criminal, bystanders, cleaning lady
In Brief: Spidey leaves a criminal hanging off the side of the building, but swings off to check out an explosion he heard, promising to return. It takes Spidey a full hour to return, and he returns and catches the criminal just as the webbing gives way, only to leave him webbed to a low-hanging flagpole.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey. Need to add Shocker.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #8 (May 2005)

1st Story: “Fanboyz” (Joe Hill/Seth Fisher/Dave Sharpe/Chris Chuckry)

Featured Characters: Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Duff Memphis, Ozzie Sinatra, Roscoe Lunch (cast of “Fanboyz,” a Jackass-like reality show where the cast reenact costumed heroics with no regard for personal safety); New Yorkers, Fanboyz film crew, police helicopter crew
In Brief: The Fanboyz shoot a Spider-Man episode, which ends with much injury and damage caused and Spidey webbing them up and shipping them off to the cops.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey.

2nd Story: “Everything” (Joshua Ortega/Ryan Sook/Dave Sharpe/Jose Villarrubia)

Featured Characters: Spider-Man (Parker), Mary Jane Watson-Parker
Other Characters: Lynne (photographer), San Franciscans including Angela Anthony, Tony (Angela’s husband, dies), Dougie (Angela and Tony’s infant son)
In Brief: While on vacation in San Francisco, Spider-Man lends aid to the city after an earthquake strikes. Though he helps out a lot, he’s unable to save a man who protected his baby son from falling debris with his own body.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey and MJ.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #9 (July 2005)

1st Story: “You’re Rubber, I’m Glue” (Christopher Yost/Drew Johnson/Ray Snyder/Dave Sharpe/John Rauch)

Feature Characters: Electro (Dillon), Human Torch (Storm), Mister Fantastic, Spider-Man (Parker), Mary Jane Watson-Parker, Thing (Grimm)
Other Characters: New Yorkers, police
In Brief: An encounter with Electro causes Spidey’s adhesion to permanently stick him to whatever he touches.
Analysis: In brackets for Electro, Spidey, and MJ. Need to add appearances for the others.

2nd Story: “Amnesiac” (Petar Bridges/Cully Hamner/Dave Sharpe/Rob Schwager)

Feature Characters: Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: New Yorkers, mugger, police, Michael Hotham (mugging victim, corpse)
In Brief: An amnesiac mugger, thinking he’s the man he just robbed and killed since he has his wallet, calls a nearby Spider-Man for help. Spidey takes him to the cops.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #10 (September 2005)

1st Story: “Banner Weblines” (Marc Sumerak/Greg Tocchini/Karl Kesel/Dave Sharpe/Gotham Studios)

Feature Characters: Chameleon (Smerdyakov) (BTS, robbed a bank), J. Jonah Jameson Jr., Jessica Jones, Rhino (Sytsevich), Spider-Man (Parker), Joe Robertson, Ben Urich
Other Characters: Tyler Chase (JJJ’s new assistant), Bugle staffers, New Yorkers, police
In Brief: Jonah hires a new assistant that shares his disdain for Spider-Man and other costumed heroes, but Tyler changes his tune somewhat after Spider-Man saves him from the Rhino.
Analysis: In brackets for Jessica and Spidey. Need to add appearances for the others.

2nd Story: Love Cycle (Obsess, Distress, Repeat) (Maria-Emiko Macuaga/Pia Guerra/Cam Smith/Dave Sharpe/Rob Schwager)

Feature Characters: Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Maya Rider (one of Peter’s students, obsessed with Spider-Man), New Yorkers, purse snatcher, police
In Brief: A high school girl obsessed with Spider-Man builds a time bomb for the purpose of killing herself when she feels Spider-Man has ignored her. The bag carrying the bomb is snatched by a purse snatcher, but Peter chases down the thief and retrieves Maya’s bag, unaware of its contents. Peter gives the sullen Maya words of encouragement, unwittingly making him Maya’s new obsession.
Flashback: Maya snaps a photo of Spider-Man saving a woman from two thugs. Spidey shoots her a two-fingered salute, unknowingly triggering her obsession.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #11 (November 2005)

1st Story: “Place Your Bets” (Brian Reed/Michael Lark/Dave Sharpe/Pete Pantazis)

Feature Characters: Electro (Dillon), Hulk, Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Bar Patrons
In Brief: At a bar, Electro rakes in cash making bets on how a televised fight between Spidey and the Hulk goes down. Two weeks later, Spidey captures Electro during a heist.
Analysis: In brackets for Electro and Spidey. Need to add a Hulk appearance.

2nd Story: “This Looks Like a Job For...!” (Jason Miller/Alberto Dose/Dave Sharpe/Rob Schwager)

Feature Characters: Absorbing Man, Spider-Man (Parker), Thing (Grimm)
Other Characters: Lynn Nelson (Peter’s boss), students including Matt, Julie, and Jeremy and their parents, police, paramedics
In Brief: Pete’s school field trip with his students is interrupted by a fight between the Thing and the Absorbing Man. Unable to change into his alter ego, Peter safeguards his students amidst the destruction.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey. Need to add appearances for Creel and Ben.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #12 (January 2006)

1st Story: “Amends” (Christos N. Gage/Mike McKone/Lary Stucker/Dave Sharpe/J. Brown and SotoColor)

Feature Characters: Armadillo, Big Wheel, Blob, Equinox, Hypno-Hustler, Man-Bull; Power Pack: Energizer, Mass Master, Starstreak, Zero-G (BTS, caught Stilt-Man during this story); Schizoid Man, Shocker (Schultz), Spider-Man (Parker), Stilt-Man (Day)
In Brief: A reformed Big Wheel causes Stilt-Man to slip away from Spidey while trying to help him. After Spidey tries to give him an ego boost by helping him stop Shocker from robbing a bank, and the pair barely succeed, bystanders’ comments inspire Spidey to suggest Big Wheel’s new professional endeavor on the monster truck circuit. Big Wheel opens a Vil-Anon chapter at a prison, inspiring Hypno-Hustler to go the same route he did, much to Spidey’s chagrin.
Flashback (5:4 - 5:6): After Big Wheel’s defeat in ASM 183, his wife walks out on him and he’s sent to prison, where he’s tormented by the Blob.
Flashback (6:1): Big Wheel attends his first Vil-Anon meeting alongside Schizoid Man, Equinox, Armadillo, and Man-Bull. I’m splitting this up since M/KSM 6 showed him present at the Venom auction, so I’m presuming his attempt to reform follows that.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey and just for the main story for Big Wheel. Need to place Big Wheel’s flashbacks and appearances for the rest. Schizoid Man doesn’t have a chronology; adding one from the Appendix site (he’s listed there for an appearances in CW:BDR and X:L 275; putting those in brackets until they’re placed). The second story is already placed for everyone therein, but one of the segments in Spidey’s chronology is labeled as ASMU2 1/2, and Captain America’s appearance is listed as ASMU 12/2.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #13 (March 2006)

1st Story: “Dinner at MacArthur’s Cafe” (Aaron Williams/Casey Jones/Dave Sharpe/Danimation)

Feature Characters: Rhino (Sytsevich), Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Mac (owner of MacArthur’s cafe), two NYPD cops
In Brief: The Rhino shows up at a diner and the owner pleads with Spidey, who showed up at his drive-thru, to cook him food and make sure the Rhino doesn’t start anything or walk out on the check. It devolves into a fight and two arriving cops agree to let the matter go if Spidey and Rhino clean up their mess.
Analysis: Already in brackets for Spidey, just need to add an appearance for the Rhino. Geez, five appearances... they liked using him in this book, didn’t they?

2nd Story: “24 Hour Bug” (Lenar Clark/Tim Smith 3/Don Hillsman/Dave Sharpe/A. Street & SotoColor)

Feature Characters: Human Torch (Storm) (BTS, captures the Vulture), May Parker, Spider-Man (Parker), Trapster (BTS, on the lam according to the news), Vulture (Toomes), Mary Jane Watson-Parker
In Brief: Spidey catches a hellacious flu bug from the Vulture and MJ and May struggle to keep him from going out on patrol until he gets better.
Analysis: Already in brackets for May, MJ, and Spidey, just have to add the others.

SPIDER-MAN UNLIMITED v2 #14 (May 2006)

1st Story: “Without a Trace” (C.B. Cebulski/David Finch/Danny Miki/Dave Sharpe/Frank D’Armata)

Feature Characters: Black Cat, Spider-Man (Parker), Mary Jane Watson-Parker
Other Characters: Doombot (destroyed)
In Brief: Spidey and Black Cat break into the Latverian Embassy to steal a spider-tracer that has Pete’s fingerprint on it.
Analysis: In brackets for Spidey and MJ, just have to add Felicia.

2nd Story: “S.C.U.D.S. (Superhuman Cleanup Department of Sanitation)” (Joe Reitman/Ron Garney/Bill Reinhold/Dave Sharpe/Frank D’Armata)

Feature Characters: Doctor Octopus (Octavius) (BTS, fought Spidey the previous night), Iceman (BTS, ice slides left over from the scene of a super-battle), Sandman (BTS, sand left over from the scene of a super-battle), Spider-Man (Parker)
Other Characters: Artie, Stan (SCUDS sanitation workers), New Yorkers, police
In Brief: A SCUDS worker laments how he always has to clean up after Spider-Man’s battles, but Spidey saves him from a couple muggers and leaves him a wine and cheese basket for Christmas. Despite that, Artie has been hoarding leftover supervillain equipment from his fights for the purpose of taking him out.
Analysis: Already placed for Spidey, just have to add everyone else.
