Spider-Man/Human Torch #1-5

Special thanks to Sean Kleefeld and his work on the still late and lamented FFPlaza.com.

SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH #1 (March 2005)

(Dan Slott/Ty Templeton/Nelson/Dave Lanphear/SotoColor’s Felix Serrano)

Appearing: Betty Brant, Doctor Doom, Doris Evans, Human Torch (Storm), Invisible Girl, J. Jonah Jameson Jr., Mister Fantastic, Mole Man, May Parker, Spider-Man (Parker), Thing (Grimm), Trapster (as Paste-Pot Pete)

In Brief: Set in the mid-’60s-published canon, the Torch hires Peter Parker as his personal photographer as part of a fame-seeking scheme.

Analysis: Sean Kleefeld’s FFPlaza.com chronology for the Torch puts this between FF 35 and ST 130, but I think this should be placed post-FF 36, which is Petruski’s last appearance as Paste-Pot Pete and this issue depicts Spidey laughing uncontrollably at his name being the catalyst for changing it.

SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH #2 (April 2005)

(Dan Slott/Ty Templeton/Nelson & Tom Palmer/Dave Lanphear/SotoColor’s Felix Serrano)

Appearing: Crystal, Human Torch (Storm), Invisible Girl, Kraven the Hunter (Sergei Kravinoff), Mister Fantastic, Harry Osborn, Spider-Man (Parker), George Stacy, Gwen Stacy, Thing (Grimm), Flash Thompson, Vulture (Toomes), Mary Jane Watson

In Brief: Set in the late-’60s-published canon, Spidey and the Torch agree to trade “beats” for a day with Spidey joining the FF on a trip through dimensions and the Torch tackling drug dealers with ties to the Maggia.

Analysis: In brackets for Spidey, the FF, Kraven, and Flash; just have to extrapolate for the additional six.

SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH #3 (May 2005)

(Dan Slott/Ty Templeton/Nelson & Tom Palmer/Dave Lanphear/SotoColor’s Felix Serrano)

Appearing: Daredevil, Human Torch (Storm), Igor, J. Jonah Jameson, Danny Ketch, Mikhlo, Mister Fantastic, Peotor, Red Ghost, Joe Robertson, Stilt-Man (Day), Spider-Man (Parker)

In Brief: Set in the ’70s-published canon, Spidey and the Torch bond over tinkering with the Spider-Mobile (and teaching Spidey to drive it) and stop the Red Ghost from stealing one of Reed’s inventions.

Analysis: The issue opens with Spidey talking to the recently-deceased Gwen Stacy atop the bridge where she was killed, where he catches her up on recent events (all from circa ASM 123-130), the latest of which is Doc Ock trying to marry Aunt May, placing this no earlier than ASM 131. Going with Sean’s placements for Reed and Johnny, which work for the timeframe Spidey inhabits alongside.

SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH #4 (June 2005)

(Dan Slott/Ty Templeton/Drew Geraci & Tom Palmer/Dave Lanphear/SotoColor’s John Rauch)

Appearing: Beetle (Jenkins), Black Cat, Black Panther (T’Challa), Jean DeWolff, Walter Hardy (in FB), Human Torch (Storm), She-Hulk (Walters), Shocker (BTS, Spidey heard he’s on the loose), Spider-Man (Parker), Venom Symbiote

In Brief: Set in the mid-'80s-published canon, the Black Cat enlists the Torch’s aid to break into the Wakandan Embassy when Spidey refuses to do so.

Flashback (1): “A dozen years ago,” Walter Hardy narrowly escapes the Wakandan Embassy after failing to steal a ceremonial mask. He drops his lucky lockpick there, which is what Felicia is after in the main story.

Analysis: Sean places this during ASM 258 between pages 10 and 11, but that’s between Reed running his tests on the symbiote on page 12 and delivering the results on page 15. The book alludes that this all happens in the same day, and I can’t imagine Reed’s analysis of the symbiote would take long enough for the events of SM/HT 4 to take place. The MCP listing for Spidey breaks the issue up between pages 10 and 11 (Pete resolves to get answers about his new costume on page 10, then swings to the Baxter Building on page 11); I’m thinking that’s a better break (as always, I’m open to arguments to the contrary). There’s a character named M’Butu here, but it’s one of T’Challa’s guards, and probably not Niganda’s PM as seen in the BP4 series.

SPIDER-MAN/HUMAN TORCH #5 (July 2005)

(Dan Slott/Ty Templeton/Drew Geraci & Greg Adams/Dave Lanphear/SotoColor’s John Rauch)

Appearing: HERBIE, Human Torch (Storm), Invisible Woman, Mister Fantastic, Occulus, May Parker, Franklin Richards, Valeria Richards, Spider-Man (Parker), Spider-Man (Reilly), Thing (Grimm), Blake Tower, Mary Jane Watson-Parker

In Brief: After the two of them talk out their long-standing differences after the Torch learns of Spidey’s true identity, Torch invites Pete, May, and MJ to dinner with the FF and the Richards’ kids, the first of many such gatherings.

Flashback (4:1-4:2): Spider-Man (Reilly) and the Torch battle Occulus.

Flashback (4:5-14): A mobster seeking vengeance on the Torch and Blake Tower for sending his son to prison (in SM/HT 2) while the Torch is doing a public appearance at Peter Parker’s school. Spidey and the Torch defeat the mobster and his goons, and Peter is forced to divulge his dual identity to the Torch in the process.

Analysis: The main story’s in brackets for the Parkers and Blake Tower, just have to extrapolate for the rest. Sean has the main story placed between S-H3 12 and NA 8 for the Torch; but Spidey’s chronology has it placed further down, suggesting a placement for Johnny between FOUR 21 and M/KSM 16. The first flashback is placed on the Master List between S-M 72 and PPTSS 237, but S-M 72 is placed after PPTSS 237 on Ben Reilly’s chronology, so I’ll aim it somewhere in that direction (S-M 71 precedes PPTSS 237 in Ben’s chronology, so I’ll go that route); this’ll obviously have to precede Johnny’s involvement in the Onslaught storyline. The issue closes with a series of photos snapped at subsequent Parker/Richards gatherings; all of these are placed in the Calendar.
