ULTIMATE WAR #1 (February, 2003)

SYNOPSIS:
Magneto and his Brotherhood blow up a truck on the Brooklyn Bridge and kill over 800 people. Nick Fury meets with the President while Iron Man and Thor look for survivors. The Ultimates find and attack the Brotherhood, but only capture some of them. Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are brought in from SHIELD black ops to help the Ultimates, because they’re Magneto’s kids and former Brotherhood leaders and may have some insight. The X-Men are asked for help, but they’re not home. Fury learns they joined the Brotherhood.

NOTE:
Published between Ultimates #8-9.

Apparently it’s a surprise that Magneto is alive. I have no idea what issue of Ultimate X-Men this references; I’ve never read any Ultimate X-Men. I guess it doesn’t matter right now, because none of them are in the MCP yet.

Dr. Eamonn Brankin previously appeared in Ultimates #7.

ULTIMATE WAR #2 (February, 2003)

SYNOPSIS:
Wasp asks Jean Grey’s dad where the X-Men are hiding, but he won’t answer, refusing to help government stooges. Meanwhile, Charles Xavier chats with his ex-wife Moira. Elsewhere, some of the X-Men return from the Savage Land and the team is reunited, but Cyclops didn’t make it back. They assume he’d dead. The Ultimates hold a meeting and Magneto attacks them. Magneto shoots Quicksilver in the knees and makes Scarlet Witch watch, because they betrayed him. Afterward, Xavier calls to explain the X-Men are not teamed up with the Brotherhood, and faked Magneto’s death in the hopes of rehabilitating him. Cap doesn’t care; he’s going to bring down both the Brotherhood and the X-Men.

Apparently, Charles and Moira were married, but are now divorced.

Cap mentioned he knew Wolverine in WWII.

ULTIMATE WAR #3 (March, 2003)

SYNOPSIS:
Nick Fury puts the President into protective custody because Magneto wants to kill him. Captain America tells Wasp everyone already knows she’s a mutant, and no one cares. She mentions that Quicksilver is recovering and that Hulk broke free and ate six nurses. Iceman wants to help the X-Men, but his dad doesn’t want him to (they’re in hiding). Xavier makes an offer to Magneto for the X-Men and Brotherhood to team up; it’s a ruse to find out where the Brotherhood is hiding out. However, Magneto had the same thought an anonymously let the Ultimates know to follow the X-Men. The Ultimates attack the X-Men.

ULTIMATE WAR #4 (April, 2003)

SYNOPSIS:
Everyone fights! Xavier is captured but the X-Men escape, thanks to a last-minute save by Iceman. Xavier is imprisoned by SHIELD. Magneto offers to break Xavier out, but Xavier refuses.

NOTE:
Published the same month as Ultimates #9, which is in the middle of a story that won’t finish being published for another YEAR, in April, 2004.
