ULTIMATE ADVENTURES #1 (November, 2002)

SYNOPSIS:
In Chicago, smartass teen orphan Hank Kipple is unhappy at the orphanage. One night some robbers try to hide out in the orphanage, but they’re followed and attacked by Hawk-Owl. The next day, orphan billionaire Jack Danner arrives at the orphanage and adopts Hank.

NOTE:
Remember this? Over a decade ago now, Peter David and Bill Jemas (Marvel’s president at the time) had a bet to see which book would sell better; David’s Captain Marvel or Jemas’ Marville. Joe Quesada (Marvel’s editor in chief at the time) got in on it too, by promoting THIS book, Ultimate Adventures by Ron Zimmerman. They promoted all three books under the U-Decide! promotion, to see which one sold the best. If you don’t remember Marville, congratulations. I will say the art is very good in this series, but the CLEAR winner was Captain Marvel, in case you were curious.

ULTIMATE ADVENTURES #2 (December, 2002)

FLASHBACK:
Jack’s brother Joe accidentally kills himself when he steps on a rake. Years later, his parents get drunk and drive off the Wacker Drive Bridge and drown in the Chicago River (see NOTE).
SYNOPSIS:
Hank moves into Jack’s mansion. That night Jack fights crime as the Hawk-Owl. The next day Hank enrolls in the public high school and is picked on by the kids because he was dropped off in a limo. That night Hank finds the Hawk-Owl’s lair.

NOTE:
Wacker Drive doesn’t have a bridge (Upper or Lower). It does run along the river, though. The bridge pictured in this comic is the Michigan Avenue Bridge. For those interested.

ULTIMATE ADVENTURES #3 (March, 2003)

SYNOPSIS:
Hawk-Owl returns home and Hank figures out that Jack is Hawk-Owl. Hank demands to go back to the orphanage. Meanwhile, Hank’s principal returns home early and learns his wife is cheating on him. Hawk-Owl visits Father Joe and reveals Hank already discovered his secret. Later, Jack picks Hank up from school, but Hank accidentally knocks out his principal. Jack and Hank chat and smooth things over. Later, the Ultimates stop by Jack’s mansion to say hi.

ULTIMATE ADVENTURES #4 (May, 2003)

SYNOPSIS:
The Ultimates try to forcefully make Hawk-Owl join the Ultimates. Hawk-Owl picks a fight with Captain America, then threatens legal action against them if they don’t leave. Meanwhile, principal Jones goes home, stops the mailman from having sex with his wife and kills them both. The next day, the Principal attacks the high school.

NOTE:
Published between Ultimates #8-9. Hank and Jan are still together here, and Hank is still with the Ultimates. This has to happen before Hank beats the tar out of Jan. The ONLY spot I can find is during Ultimates #6, after the Hulk fight and before Jan and Hank fight. Thor isn’t quite on the team yet by that point, but oh well.

ULTIMATE ADVENTURES #5 (July, 2003)

FLASHBACK:
Years ago, Lee’s father teaches Jack, Daniel and Lee how to fight. One night, Jack breaks up a fight between a hawk and an owl. Later, the boys join the military. When they return, Jack fights crime as the Hawk-Owl.
SYNOPSIS:
Jack tells Hank he can’t go fight crime with him; he’s too young. Hawk-Owl goes to the school and fights the Principal, but’s he’s overpowered. That night, Jack is dumped on his mansion’s front lawn with a report card on his chest (he got an F).

ULTIMATE ADVENTURES #6 (September, 2003)

SYNOPSIS:
The Principal and Ms. Willow drive off in a bus. As Hawk-Owl recovers, Daniels goes to fight the Principal, but he’s captured and tortured. Hank goes to fight the Principal as Woody, but he’s overpowered. Hawk-Owl and Lee arrive, and the Principal is defeated. Later, everyone convinces Aunt Ruth that Hank won’t go on crime fighting adventures. Later, Hank goes on crime fighting adventures.
