Coming from Marvel in August

Post by JD »

Full solicitations at Newsarama, as usual : http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/Aug0 ... tions.html

Slightly snarky highlights for this month :

NEW SERIES

- RUNAWAYS #1, by Moore & Ramos, starts a third volume. Let's hope they'll manage to ship #30 before...

- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #1 is just a repackaging of the previous bimonthly title with nearly the same title. There seems to be more original content, actually (including a regular MC2 strip).

NEW MINISERIES

- SECRET INVASION: INHUMANS #1 (of 4), by Pokaski (yet another Heroes writer) & Ranay will focus on what happened to the real Black Bolt.

- SECRET INVASION: THOR #1 (of 3), by Fraction & Braithwaithe

- SECRET INVASION: X-MEN #1 (of 4), by Carey & Nord

- SECRET INVASION: SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY #1 (of 3), by Reed & Santucci, actually focuses on Spidey's supporting cast, as the wallcrawler is presumably busy in the main mini.

- VENOM: DARK ORIGIN #1 (of 5), by Wells & (Angel) Medina. Probably the reason why Wells seems already off the ASM rotation.

- SPIDER-MAN LOVES MARY JANE #1 (of 5), by Moore & Rousseau. Finally ! Hopefully this will lead to more minis the same way the original one did...

- NYX: NO WAY HOME #1 (of 6), by Liu (a "best-selling writer") & Andrasofszky. Has someone got any interest left in this ? Let's hope this time it concludes in less than two years...

ONESHOTS

- X-FACTOR SPECIAL: LAYLA MILLER, by David & de Landro : because the regular title is too busy dealing with Secret Invasion.

- X-MEN ORIGINS: JEAN GREY, by McKeever & Mayhew. Apparently, they're serious about publishing origin stories of random X-Men. Or are they teasing her return yet again ?

- WOLVERINE: KILLING MADE SIMPLE is yet another compilation of random Wolverine stories. One of them features Nanny & Orphan-Maker !

- SPIDER-MAN SUMMER SPECIAL, by Giffen/Burchett & Tobin/Coover. Thrice a month is not enough, apparently : it's the second month running we get an extra one-shot with inventory stories to fill the schedule.

- GHOST RIDER ANNUAL #2: MERCY, by Spurrier (who ?) & Robinson.

- IMMORTAL IRON FIST: THE ORIGIN OF DANNY RAND : a reprint of the MARVEL PREMIERE issues (#15-16) + a framing story by Fraction & Kano.

- We get a reprint of PUNISHER KILLS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE. Yes, from 1995. There's a movie coming soon, of course.

Glorified fill-in Watch :
- newuniversal: conqueror, by Spurrier & Nguyen, allows for a half-way break in the shockfront mini.

NOTABLE ISSUES

- SECRET INVASION continues in : SI #5, SI:RUNAWAYS/YOUNG AVENGERS #3, SI: FRONTLINE #2, SI: THOR #1, SI: X-MEN #1, SI: INHUMANS #1, SI: SPIDER-MAN BND #1, NEW AVENGERS #44, MIGHTY AVENGERS #17, AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #16, THUNDERBOLTS #123, NEW WARRIORS #15, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #4, NOVA #16, BLACK PANTHER #40, MS. MARVEL #30, X-FACTOR #34 (in the third and last part of a crossover with SHE-HULK), INCREDIBLE HERCULES #120, CAPTAIN BRITAIN & MI:13 #4, and SHE-HULK #32. That's 20 tie-ins, 10 of which are set to ship on the week of August 27th alone.

- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #568 is double-sized, with an Venom second story by Waid & Granov. The main story kicks off a 6-issue Slott/JRJr arc.

- CABLE #6 is also double-sized, for a "meanwhile, back in the present" (sic) issue.

- MARVEL ADVENTURES THE AVENGERS is cancelled with issue #27.

- NEW EXILES ships twice, presumably to mimic the original's volume "18 issues a year" schedule. This looks more like 16 a year, but close enough.

- PUNISHER also ships twice : #60 ends Ennis's tenure, while #61 is the debut of Hurwitz & Campbell (there'll actually be several rotative teams).

GONE MISSING THIS MONTH :
- newuniversal: shockfront (nice to see all this lead time hasn't gone to waste...)
- IRON MAN: VIVA LAS VEGAS (Granov has never been a fast artist, and they actually had an excuse for shipping this mini before the whole was ready. But did they really have to assign him an ASM story ?)
- THOR (yet again, but there's the SI mini)
- HULK (nearly a bimonthly at this point)
- WOLVERINE: ORIGINS
- POWERS (#32 has already been rescheduled to August anyway)

NOTABLE COLLECTIONS

- Marvel Masterworks : Golden Age Marvel Comics v3, Amazing Spider-Man v10
- Essentials : Man-Thing v2

- There's a TOMB OF DRACULA Omnibus. After all, the Essentials sold well...

- HULK: HEART OF THE ATOM PREMIERE HC covers his romance with Jarella.

- SPIDER-MAN J: TURNING JAPANESE DIGEST reprints the same material that showed up in SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #1-6.

- YOUNG INHUMANS TPB is a repackaging of the McKeever series from several years ago (a Tsunami title, right ?). Because YOUNG is the new NEW.

- PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL CLASSIC VOL. 1 TPB. Movie tie-in, of course. Does this really qualify as "Classic", though ?

- FANTASTIC FOUR VISIONARIES: WALTER SIMONSON VOL. 2 TPB

- SPIDER-MAN: KRAVEN’S LAST HUNT TPB : yet another reprint.

So, what caught up your eye this time ?

Sounds like the trampling over Silent War is complete...
JD wrote:- VENOM: DARK ORIGIN #1 (of 5), by Wells & (Angel) Medina. Probably the reason why Wells seems already off the ASM rotation.
IIRC, this has been in the works a while...
JD wrote:- X-MEN ORIGINS: JEAN GREY, by McKeever & Mayhew. Apparently, they're serious about publishing origin stories of random X-Men. Or are they teasing her return yet again ?
Mayhew was the guy who got caught swiping a pic of the King of Spain for HoM-Magneto, yes?

Well, this is the second one-shot in a row (last month, along with shockfront #3, there was a newuniversal: 1959 one-shot solicited)
JD wrote:- MARVEL ADVENTURES THE AVENGERS is cancelled with issue #27.
Nope, just the last issue of Jeff Parker's four-issue return. MAdv writers often do four (or multiple-of-four) issue stints for the digest before swapping out for the next one.

Wasn't this already collected in digests?

Old (pre-2000s) TPBs often get "Classic" appended, especially when there's a current (or at least recent) book with the same title.

Simon Spurrier. Brit writer, 2000AD and JUDGE DREDD. I first heard of him when he started his GUTSVILLE ongoing at Image. I'll probably take a look at the first trade as any comic about a present-day shanty town in the belly of an ocean beast is my kind of concept. He also wrote the SILVER SURFER: IN THY NAME mini that I haven't read yet.

Nope. #1-6 were, but #7-12 were never collected.

Seems to be a problem with those 2003/04 Tsunami books -- New Mutants v2 #7-13 shared the same fate. Maybe this is a good sign for them ... maybe we'll get a YOUNG NEW MUTANTS TPB or something. ;)

Gag me with a spoon. I'm really tired of BND - I'm about ready to drop the book. And they devote an entire Secret Invasion tie-in mini to it?
