Coming from Marvel in December

Post by JD »

Full solicitations at Newsarama, as usual : http://www.newsarama.com/comics/080916- ... tions.html
If you prefer Comic Book Resources, here you go : http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page ... e&id=18060
Or you could go directly to the Marvel website : http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?date=2008-12

Slightly snarky highlights for this month :

NEW SERIES

- WAR MACHINE #1, by Pak & Manko, is the replacement for IRON MAN: DIRECTOR OF SHIELD. There's not much info on it, though (see below).

- INCOGNITO #1, by Brubaker & Phillips. An Icon book which seems to have many similarities to SLEEPER.

NEW MINISERIES

- X-INFERNUS #1 (of 4), by Cebulski & Camuncoli, has the X-Men fight Magik.

- PUNISHER: WAR ZONE #1-4 (of 6), by Ennis & Dillon. Weekly. What's more to say ?

- MARVELS: EYE OF THE CAMERA #1 & 2 (of 6), by Busiek & Anacleto : a sequel to the famous mini from 15 years ago or so. This one covers the 70s and 80s (the all-new X-Men, Secret Wars, the horror revival...)

- X-MEN: NOIR #1 (of 4), by Van Lente & Calero
- SPIDER-MAN: NOIR #1 (of 4), by Hine, Sapolsky & Di Giandomenico
Basically, a transposition of the characters in the 30s with a Noir feel. Out of continuity, of course. The X-Men one sounds fun, but I have trouble seeing the Spider-Man one working. (There's apparently more of those in the pipeline.)

- ENDER'S SHADOW: BATTLE SCHOOL #1 & 2 (of 5), by Carey & Fiumara : another adaptation of an Orson Scott Card book.
- YTHAQ — THE FORSAKEN WORLD #1 (of 4), by Arleston & Floch : another Soleil book.
- THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ #1 (of 8), by Shanower & Young : another public domain adaptation.

ONESHOTS
Warning : there's a lot of them, with SEVEN shipping the week of December 3rd alone.

- SECRET INVASION Aftermath ! This is the long-awaited return of the CLASSIFIED mention, as none of these titles have any description beyond the creative team, and will only be described when SI #8 will ship (November 19th, then).
* SECRET INVASION: DARK REIGN, by Bendis and Maleev
* SECRET INVASION: REQUIEM, which doesn't have a creative team and is not even the real title. We just know it's double-sized for some reason.
* SECRET INVASION: NEW NATION, which looks a lot like a trailer book, given the six different writers
* The CLASSIFIED solicitations also spread over NEW AVENGERS #48, AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #20, INVINCIBLE IRON MAN #8, MS. MARVEL #34 and WAR MACHINE #1.

- X-MEN: KINGBREAKER #1 (by Yost & Weaver), features the Shi'ar/Vulcan/Starjammers subplot and leads into the future WAR OF KINGS crossover. The solicitations are confused as to whether this is a one-shot or a mini, though.
* GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #8 is another lead-in to WAR OF KINGS.

- It's that time of the year again, so we get yet another batch of weekly WHAT IF ? books :
* WHAT IF? HOUSE OF M, by Reed, McCann & Pantalena : "No More Powers", basically.
* WHAT IF? CAPTAIN AMERICA: FALLEN SON, by Sumerak & Goring : "What if Iron Man had died instead ?"
* WHAT IF? NEWER FANTASTIC FOUR, by Tobin & Scherberger : Wolverine, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Hulk repeat the old joke.
* WHAT IF? SPIDER-MAN: BACK IN BLACK, by Grant & Vasquez : "What if Mary Jane had been shot instead ?"
* WHAT IF? SECRET WARS, by Bollers & Molina : "What if Doom had kept the Beyonder's powers ?"
* all these one-shots also feature a back-up story by Cebulski & Spaziante : "What if the Runaways became the Young Avengers ?"

- SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY YEARBOOK : one third "Saga" book, one third Handbook profiles, one third pin-ups.

- CAPTAIN AMERICA: THEATER OF WAR: AMERICA FIRST!, by Chaykin : this one covers the Captain America of the Fifties.

- HULK FAMILY #1, an anthology book featuring She-Hulk, Skaar, Thundra's daughter, and Scorpion (they're really going with the ambiguous retcon stating Bruce Banner may be her father ? seriously ?).

- SHE-HULK: COSMIC COLLISION, by David & Asrar. Guest-stars the female Guardians of the Galaxy (Gamora & Mantis ?).

- MARVEL APES #0 reprints the Gibbons's first appearances (ASM #110-111), plus the trailer strip in ASM FAMILY #1.

- MOON KNIGHT: SILENT KNIGHT #1, by Milligan & Campbell. A Christmas story.
- PUNISHER MAX X-MAS SPECIAL, by Aaron & Boschi, is also holiday-themed.

- WOLVERINE: FLIES TO A SPIDER, by Hurwitz & Opena. The seventh random Wolverine one-shot this year.

Glorified fill-in Watch :
- FANTASTIC FOUR COSMIC SPECIAL, thrown together so late it does not even have any info beyond the title, size and cover.
- THOR: GOD-SIZED #1, by Fraction and various artists. Apparently, God is 64 pages long.

NOTABLE ISSUES

- ULTIMATUM continues in ULTIMATUM #3, ULTIMATE X-MEN #99, ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR #59 and ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #129.

- NEW EXILES ANNUAL #1, on top of two issues this month.

- There are various "Villain Variants" on some random titles.

GONE MISSING THIS MONTH :
- MIGHTY AVENGERS : interestingly, it's been confirmed it's NOT cancelled, though Bendis is off the book after November's #20.
- FANTASTIC FOUR : skip month to compensate the delays (#563 has already been pushed back to December)
- THE TWELVE
- THOR
- IRON MAN: VIVA LAS VEGAS
- CAPTAIN AMERICA: WHITE (already falling out of the bimonthly schedule)
- ASTONISHING X-MEN (the last regular issue was to ship September early October. Uh oh.)
- newuniversal: shockfront (last "regular" issue : pushed back to October)
- All of the Icon books except for the new one. Special mention to POWERS, which is cancelled as of #30 (even though they solicited #31-32 a few months ago).

NOTABLE COLLECTIONS

- Marvel Masterworks : Avengers v8, Atlas Era Strange Tales v2, Thor v8
- Essentials : Wolverine v5

- SECRET WARS II OMNIBUS, including all of the official tie-ins. Somehow, they even chose to pack DEADPOOL TEAM-UP #1 in.

- AVENGERS: FIRST TO LAST PREMIERE HC collects THE LAST AVENGERS STORY + the backups from AVENGERS CLASSIC.

- INFINITY CRUSADE VOL. 1 TPB

- DAREDEVIL BY FRANK MILLER & KLAUS JANSON VOL. 2 TPB

- X-MEN: THE COMPLETE ONSLAUGHT EPIC BOOK 4 TPB finishes the series.

- WHAT IF? CLASSIC VOL. 5 TPB

- HULK: GIANT-SIZE TPB collects various recent Hulk one-shots.

So, what caught up your eye this time ?

No, it's actually the next "cosmic" crossover (in the vein of Annihilation). From what I've understood, the Shi'Ar and the Inhumans are involved on top of the usual players.
