She then kills Lester Maddox, her sister’s boyfriend and killer.
Pg8-pg11pn2: same night as (1-2:3)
Black Widow swears up and down that she didn’t kill the customers in the gay bar and given the way she’s explained her history and powers to the Phantom Reporter, he may be inclined to believe her. But who knows? Elsewhere, Dr. Jack Castle is questioned by the police. There were scorch marks found at the gay bar murder scene and his powers are fire-based. They question his origin, which makes Dr. Castle think of something from his past after he’s released.
Pg11pn3-pg11pn4-FB
Dr. Castle stands over a dying man he can’t save. The dying man says he has something very important for Jack as the man ignites his hand.
Pg11pn5-pg11pn6(of 6): same night as (8-11:2)
Frustrated, Dr. Castle walks away from the police precinct.
Pg12-pg19pn1(of 4): next day
The Blue Blade chats with Elizabeth Zogolowski as she sets up her father’s Electro equipment. She explains how it works and the Blue Blade tries it out. He’s impressed with Electro but accidentally activates it’s boot jets. Once he calms it down he accidentally(again) downloads his memories/consciousness into Electro. He turns the machine off and thanks Elizabeth, but he’s realized something. As they leave, there are scorch marks noticed on the ground under Electro’s boot jets…
Pg19pn2-pg19pn4-FB: between last issue and this issue
Master Mind Excello pays the Laughing Mask’s bail, writes a letter, and sends it and a new suit to the Phantom Reporter.
Pg20-pg22pn1(of 5): same day as (11:5-11:6)
The Phantom Reporter reads a letter sent to him by Master Mind Excello and looks at a new suit he’s sent him. Rockman comes in and chats with the Reporter; he says that he had a dream where he spoke with Master Mind Excello and he told him the he would see his family again very soon. Rockman seems very pleased by this. Later, the Blue Blade checks out the new suit the network has made for him, then drives off for a meeting.
Pg22pn2-pg22pn4-FB: the Great Depression
A young Roy Chambers chats with his friend Bill about moving to California and making something of himself, while reading a ‘Scarlet Sabre’ comic strip in the newspaper.
Pg22pn5-pg23: same day as (20-22:1)
Dynamic Man shows up to meet with the Blue Blade, and the Blue Blade ays he has something to tell Dynamic Man; he’s figured something out…

References:
Hrmn. This is the second origin they’ve thrown into question so far, but at least this one can be reconciled with previously published stories if needed. I guess we’ll see what happens with the Fiery Mask’s history in upcoming issues, but for now I’ll set it aside, just like with Rockman.

We’re getting closer to finding out what’s going on with Electro…

The flashback for Black Widow's origin occurs in 1928 according to her sister's gravestone (1910-1928). I believe this may actually make Black Widow the first costumed superhero of the 20th century. Anyone know any earlier ones?

Good question. One fb seemed to indicate that Sun Girl acted as an adventurer during the 1920's. Night Raven stood as active as early as the 1920's. Sadie Daly made a comment to the effect that Night Raven seemed to her the earliest known costumed adventurer.

However, the legacy characters such as El Aguila and the Phantom Rider do muddy matters up. Marvel Westerns: Outlaw Files indicates a line of wearers of the El Aguila mantle.

1) A flashback in "Inhumans" vol. 3 #8 (July, 1999) has Triton the Inhuman saving a boy from the sinking of the Lusitania on May 7, 1915. Making this particular Inhuman active since World War I.

2) Black Axe, a Marvel UK character who sometimes played the hero has been indicated being immortal, active since c. 13,000 BC. Flashbacks to his life include appearances in ancient Egypt, Europe during the Black Death, Japan during the civil war which ended in its unification under the Tokugawa c. 1603 and the American Civil War (1861 - 1865).

3) Gargoyle/Isaac Christians is a veteran of World War I but did not become superhuman until later.

4) According to a flashback in "Invaders" vol. 1 #7 (July, 1976), the Freedom's Five were a superhero group active in World War I. They consisted of Crimson Cavalier, Phantom Eagle/Karl Kaufman, Sir Steel, Silver Squire and Union Jack/Montgomery, Lord Falsworth.

5) Man-God/Hugo Danner appeared in "Marvel Preview" #9 (Winter, 1976) in a partial adaptation of his original, public domain novel. The adaptation includes his superhuman activities during World War I. According to "Marvel Atlas" #1 his tale took place on Earth-616.

6) Forgotten One/Hero of the Eternals has basically been doing the superhero thing since the times of ancient Summeria. According to a reference in "Avengers Spotlight" #35 (August, 1990), he was active in the United States during the 19th century. Learning to tame horses by "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

7) A Man named Frank, an Old West vigilante and predecessor to the Punisher, appeared in "Punisher:A Man named Frank" (1994) was depicted starting activities in 1898. Suggested to have going in the early decades of the 20th century.

8) According to a flashback in "Ghost Rider" vol. 3 #89 (October, 1997), a predecessor to the Ghost Rider was active in the Western Front. He was depicted with the standard powers of the Spirits of Vengeance, a flaming sword and a military uniform, fighting in the front lines. Other than being a member of the Kale bloodline, nothing else is known of him.

9) Gus Mustin appeared in "Marvel Fanfare" vol. 1 #55 (February, 1991) was a soldier of the United States Army mutated to gain superhuman strength during World War I. In World War II, he thought of joining the wave of younger superhumans playing the superhero. He quit early after realizing his superhuman strength did not make him invulnerable.

10) Ulysses Bloodstone, another Marvel immortal, according to a cameo flashback in "Rampaging Hulk" vol. I #8 (April, 1978) flew a biplane around the time of World War I. Persumably another superhuman active in the armed forces.

The poster asked for "the first costumed superhero of the 20th century". Most of the responses to this question included characters who had metahuman abilities but not costumes (such as Ulysses Bloodstone) or a costume but no metahuman powers (e.g. the World War One Union Jack).

Did the original poster intend to only include costumed adventurers who had metahuman abilities or do characters who rely on Doc Savage-style gadgets count? By which I mean, in contrast to technology used by Max Allan Collins' Wild Dog or perhaps the Penetrator, technology significantly beyond current technology that one could purchase at a sporting goods store or customize from same? [Wait a minute, Doc Savage existed on Earth-616, too (but his first case that I know of took place in 1933 or so, after 1928, removing him from this deliberation; he also did not wear a costume).] Did the original Union Jack of World War One rely on advanced technology?

William K. Everson once had to deal with this taxonomy question in his book The Detective in Film. He decided to give coverage to Dick Tracy but minimal to the Batman. Neither Dick Tracy or the Batman usually if ever get depicted as metahumans (though I imagine Mythbusters would have a row about some of the altercations that they manage to walk away from alive and sound of limb).

Update: in Captain America I#442, Zeitgeist targeted the Angel (Holloway, the Saint/Simon Templar manque) as part of his murder spree of costumed adventurers as he felt that the Angel served as the first costumed adventurer (Marvels#1 establishes that the Angel began his adventures before the Human Torch came to public knowledge. The first Angel story in Marvel Comics#1 presented him (the Angel) already in action (in a plot swiped from the Saint in New York).

There's a whole list of WWI-era characters at the Appendix site. Also I must, of course, point out that Rom and his fellow Spaceknights became active 200 years ago. Even given the sliding scale of Marvel Time, that's still pre-20th century. :)

Once you add in extraterrestrials (to say nothing of extradimensionals) operating outside of Earth, it starts escalating as to who counts.
