MARVEL APES #4 (M/APES 4)
December 2008
"100 Monkeys!"
26 pages

EARTH-616
Characters: The Gibbon (Martin "Marty" Blank), Dr. Fiona Fitzhugh, Roy Reyna, Ares, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Wasp, Wonder Man, Edwin Jarvis (BTS, possibly a Skrull)

APEVERSE
Characters: Ape X (Roy Reyna), Captain America, Cyclops, Dr. Druid, Ghost Rider, Gro-Rilla, Hawkeye, Hulk, Invisible Woman, Iron Fist, Iron Mandrill, Monkey-C, Ms. Marvel, Punisher, second Simian Torch, Speedball (Robbie Baldwin), Spider-Monkey, Thing, Thorangutang, Wolverine
Villains: Baron Blood (as Captain America), Bucky, Red Raven, Sub-Mariner, Toro

Summary:
(1) The Apeverse Watcher briefly recaps the events of issues 1-3.
(2-4) At Ape-Vengers Tower, Baron Blood (as Captain America) has Marty beaten by Ape-X until Fiona agrees to open the portal to Earth-616. Daytime, green trees. Probably Marty and Fiona's fifth day in the Apeverse.
(5-20) At FF headquarters, Blood (as Cap) has Fiona fix the portal, with the Ape-Vengers and the FF present. Marty plans to push her through the portal and trash the machine. The Outcasts arrive and clash with the other heroes. As the real Cap reclaims his shield, Blood and the Invaders are revealed as vampires, and all the heroes join forces against them. Fiona opens the portal as Blood severely injures Speedball. Marty and Fiona take the injured Speedball through the portal. Ape X destroys the portal, and the explosion destroys the top floors of the FF HQ to keep them from being followed. The heroes are protected by Sue's force field, but most of the vampires are destroyed. Spider-Monkey has captured the vampire Bucky. Ape X was next to the exploding portal, and there is no sign of him after the battle. Nighttime, full moon (5-19); battles ends during early morning (20). Probably nighttime of Marty and Fiona's fifth day in the Apeverse, leading into the morning of the sixth day.
(21-23) Back on Earth-616, the simian Speedball recovers at State University (probably in Hegemon, NY) and tells Marty and Fiona he wants to stay on their Earth. Daytime, green trees. "The next day" and a clock tower shows it to be about 12:45 (in the afternoon?), so this is probably the day after the night of M/APES 4 (5-19) and a few hours after the early morning of M/APES (20).
(24) In Los Angeles, the human Roy Reyna and his friends (Oso, Pinto, Vernita) look for a shooting star that landed in a park. Roy finds a mexican wrestling mask. Daytime, green trees in LA. They are looking for the shooting star from "the other night," so probably the day after M/APES 4 (20) and (21-23).
(25) At State U, Marty and Fiona talk about his saving the world. Daytime, green trees. Possibly same day as M/APES 4 (24).
(26) At Avengers Tower on Earth-616, the monkey Speedball asks to joins the Avengers (Ares, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Wasp, Wonder Man). Daytime, "a few weeks later." Note that Speedball mentioned Jarvis directing him to the Avengers, so there is a BTS appearance for him, and given the placement of this story, this could be the Skrull impersonating Jarvis from SECINV.

Here is a brief summary of M/APES 1-4 for placement in Paul Bourcier's Marvel Calender:
Day 1. Marty encounters the Avengers (Iron Man, Wasp, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow) and Red Ghost.
Day 2. Marty arrives at State U and meets FIona.
Day 5. Marty and Fiona transported to Apeverse. Full moon on Earth-616.
Day 6. They meet the Ape-Vengers.
Day 8. Marty, Speedball and Ape X battle Wolverine. Baron Blood kills Reed. Marty and Fiona found by Outcasts. Full moon in Apeverse.
Day 9. Marty, Fiona and Outcasts rescue true Cap. Marty and FIona captured.
Day 10. Heroes battle vampires. Marty, Fiona and Speedball return to Earth-616. Full moon in Apeverse.
Day 11. Morning immediately after battle. Speedball recovers on Earth-616.
Day 12. Roy finds mask. Fiona and Marty talk.
"Weeks later." Speedball meets with Avengers (Ares, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Wasp, Wonder Man).

Paul, you should probably be able to incorporate the Earth-616 full moon on Day 5 into the Calendar. The full moons in the Apeverse on Days 8 and 10 in the Apeverse are probably part of the three days of the full moon in their own lunar cycle and unrelated to Earth-616. It is known that lunar cycles of some universes are not necessarily synchronistic with Earth-616. In Nightman v2 #2/2, it was noted by Daimon Hellstrom that there was a full moon in the Ultraverse but not on Earth-616.

The story occurs BEFORE the Secret Invasion (Wasp is still alive), after ASM3 554 (reference to the DB newspaper, M/APES 1), after the Civil War (due to current lineup of the Avengers, M/APES 1 and M/APES 4, and reference to Speedball destroying a city, M/APES 2), after CA5 34 (appearance of human Bucky as new Captain America, M/APES 2).

When Fiona's fixes the machine, there are numerous images that appear from current series that may help us place these events. Unfortunately, there is a scene from the final battle in Secret Invasion, a battle in which Wasp dies, which contradicts her later appearance in M/APES 4 (26). Any suggestions on placement?

Any chance this includes original material that can be incorporated into a Secret Invasion chronology?

Thanks, wolframbane!

No problem Paul. Here is the brief synopsis of M/APES 4/2.

(1:1) The Watcher of the Apeverse tells the story of the Fantastic Four 2099 of his universe.
(1:2-4) The FF 2099 (Doctor Strange 2099, Nick Furry 2099, Ghost Rider 2099, Jean Grey 2099) clash with Greylactus (a destroyer-duplicate of Jean created by Galactus.
(5-7) The Watcher meets the Watcher-Watcher, a taller balder version of himself "who Watches the Watchers." The Watcher-Watcher reveals he has been observing the Watcher during M/APES 1/2-3/2, and then has the Watcher watch the final battle of Secret Invasion on a monitor.
(7:3-7:4) The a vidscreen, they watch the battle scene from SECINV 7 (2-3). The Watcher proclaims "I hate this."

---
Queen Veranke: Your hate is your own. Your judgement is your own. We are here to save you. We are here to change you. And we're here because in spite all you've done to our empire... He loves you.
Spider-Man: Uh... he who?
Queen Veranke: God.
Nick Fury: Yeah? Well MY god has a HAMMER!

I assume you mean SECINV 7 (1-2), since the recap page doesn't count. I'll add M/APES 4/2 to my SECRET INVASION chronology, which I'll post after A:INIT 19 comes out. Thanks.

Wolframbane, I tried to reformat your analyses into Calendar entries, but I may not have everything right. Please review the following and suggest any edits. Also, are those framing sequences with the Apeverse Watcher supposed to occur while events are unfolding, or do they occur at some point after the M/APES stories, rendering the stories themselves as flashbacks?

MARVEL APES #1 – FB (3:3)
Between ASM 110 (17:3) and ASM 110 (17:4). The Gibbon approaches Spider-Man to become his partner, and Spidey laughs at him.

MARVEL APES #1 – FB (3:4)
Sometime during PPTSS 245-246. The Spider-Man Revenge Squad (Spot, Kangaroo, Grizzly, Gibbon) fight amongst themselves next to a knocked-out Spidey.

MARVEL APES #1 – FB (3:5)
One day, between PWJ2 16 and M/APES 1. Gibbon (his hair having grown back since PWJ2 16) and Princess Python separate. Princess Python is holding the python that Gibbon gave her after her previous python Pythagoras had gotten sick and died in PWJ2 16..

MARVEL APES #1 (1-4:1)
One day. This segment occurs “four long days” before M/APES 1 (4-22) and must occur after ASM 549 (3-17) and MA 11 (15-21). The Gibbon is at a bank when the Red Ghost and his Super-Apes attack. Before he can stop them, the Mighty Avengers (Iron Man, Wasp, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow) arrive and defeat them. Probably that night, Marty is in his apartment looking at his old Gibbon suit in the closet. He holds a DB newspaper with the caption "Ghost Busted By Avengers." Another paper has the ad "Superpowered Individuals Wanted For In-depth Study."

[BTS]
The day after M/APES 1 (1-4) and “four long days” before M/APES 1 (4-10). Marty reports to State University to be studied.

MARVEL APES #1 (4:2-10)
One early morning. After “four long days” of examination at State University, Dr. Fiona Fitzhugh notices a doppler shift in Marty’s Kirlian aura. She analyzes the doppler shift with the Inter-Dimensional Experimental Access (IDEA) facility, and they are accidentally pulled thru a vortex. Marty and Fiona find themselves in the arboreal "Monkhattan" in the "monkeyverse" or "Marvel Apes Universe." They encounter the intellgient simian inhabitants, and steal some clothes to blend in.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #1/2
The day after MAPES 1 (4-10). Spider-Monkey is trapped under tons of metal in Doc Ook's underwater hideout. He uses all of his strength and thinks he has lifted it, only to find that Ape X actually lifted it off. Ape X tells him that Doc Ook is on a rampage, and the two leave to chase him down.
MARVEL APES #1 (11-22)
The same day as ASMF 1/2. Wandering through Monkhattan, Marty and Fiona observe a battle between this universe's Spider-Monkey, Speedball and Ape X vs. Dr. Ooktopus. Marty intervenes and helps capture Doc Ook. Spider-Monkey and Ape X take Marty of Ape-Vengers Tower and Speedball Fiona to see their Reed Richards (Mr. Baboon). Ape X makes a reference to Doc Ook's failure to steal the Serpent Crown. At Ape-Vengers Tower, Marty meets Iron Mandrill and Gro-Rilla (ie Yellowjacket). He notices several apparently reformed villains on the team. Marty is honored to meet the gorilla Captain America. He is offered the chance to become a super hero. At the FF headquarters, Speedball introduces Fiona to the Fantastic Four. Mr. Baboon tells her of the failed rocket experiment that gave them their powers, but which also transformed Sue into a human. As he could not cure her condition, he assumed Fiona was also mutated, but she informs him she is from another dimension. "After a few hours" of discussing his code name (Marty prefers "Ninja Monk"), he accompanies Cap and the several other Ape-Vengers (except for Ape X and a handful of others) to the sub-levels of the Tower, where they judge Doc Ook guilty and rip out his tentacles. Marty is horrified as the Ape-Vengers seemingly beat Ook to death. Full moon on Earth-616.
MARVEL APES #2 (2-7)
The same day as M/APES #1 (11-22). This story must occur after CA5 34. After the Ape-Vengers nearly beat Doc Ook to death, Captain America dismisses them and Marty from the room. The Invaders (Bucky, Red Raven, Sub-Mariner, Toro) enter the room and they proceed to kill Ook. A bothered Marty is reunited with Ape X, Spidey and Speedball, as well as Fiona, who tells him Reed may be able to help them return to Earth-616. Cap meets Fiona and is particularly interested in the fact they are from another dimension. Reed said it should take "two days" to construct a gateway to send them home.

MARVEL APES #2 (8-20)
The day after M/APES 2 (2-7). Marty, Speedball (as Robbie Baldwin) and Ape X (as Roy Reyna) are having lunch outside. Ape X explains he gained his powers from an enchanted Mexican wrestling mask. They briefly clash with Wolverine of the X-Apes, who are wanted outcasts, but Wolverine escapes. Marty is informed Reed finished the gateway and there is trouble in Wookanda. That night at Freedoms Four Plaza, Marty arrives and Fiona informs him the FF are off stopping the Frightful Four from sinking Monkhattan Island. Fiona tries to use Marty's bio-energy signature to open the gateway, but finds she cannot as his “signature is more closely aligned with this dimension than our own." Cap observes and reveals he arranged for the Frightful Four's activities so the FF would be absent. After seeing a video image of the Captain America (Barnes) of Earth-616 and learning of Cap’s intention to invade Earth-616, Reed Richards arrives and attacks Cap. Having deduced Cap is a vampire, Reed tries to kill Cap with a wooden stake, but is himself impaled and slain. The Invaders, also all vampires, arrive, but Fiona causes a distraction allowing her and Marty to escape thru a window. As the Invaders unsuccessfully pursue them, Cap tells Bucky they are going to invade Earth-616 for an endless energy supply. As Marty flees with Fiona, he encounters Speedball, who knocks him unconscious.

MARVEL APES #2 (21-23)
The day after M/APES 2 (8-20). Cap and Sue Storm hold a televised press conference. Cap claims Marty and Fiona tricked Reed into creating a portal to allow their world to invade the Monkeyverse, and then murdered him. He announces his intention to launch a pre-emptive strike against Earth-616. Marty awakens and finds himself bound. He is confronted by Speedball and a large gathering of other heroes.
MARVEL APES #3 (2-26)
The same day as M/APES 2 (21-23). At Ape-Vengers Tower, Captain America (actually Baron Blood) brings Ape X into his inner circle, and they discuss Marty's apparent betrayal. Marty, having awoken surrounded by the Marvel Apes, freaks out and bolts, running thru a doorway that leads directly into the Mindless Ones' dimension (this may be the Apeverse counterpart to the Mindless Ones' realm, not the reality-616 version, as Dr. Druid later explains that this door is linked "to any number of doors in our world - but only in our world"). After Speedball pulls him back, he is reunited with Fiona. The other heroes explain that the Invaders are actually vampires and they secretly oppose them, with Speedball a double agent. Dr. Druid explains they are in a pocket dimension 'safe house' established by their Dr. Strange before slain by the Invaders. Marty realizes if they can find the real Cap, they can stop Blood from invading Earth-616. He hypothesizes that Cap may actually be frozen in the North Sea such as on Earth-616, assuming Baron Blood had ditched the body. "Within six hours," Marty, Fiona, Speedball, Dr. Druid, Wolverine and Bruce Bannaner (who changed from the Hulk when Druid cast a calming spell on him) are flying in an aircraft over the North Sea. They detect Cap in the ice, and Wolverine kicks Bruce out of the airlock to anger him and turn him back to the Hulk. Wolverine identifies the frozen Cap from a scar on his arm that he gave Cap in "December '44" when Cap was undercover as a Nazi. Namor and Red Raven arrive and battle them, but Druid aakens Cap who turns the tide, but the vampires escape with Fiona. Cap, Marty and the heroes resolve to save her.
MARVEL APES #4 (2-20)
The same night as M/APES 3 (2-26). At Ape-Vengers Tower, Baron Blood (as Captain America) has Marty beaten by Ape-X until Fiona agrees to open the portal to Earth-616. Daytime, green trees. Probably Marty and Fiona's fifth day in the Apeverse.
At FF headquarters, Blood (as Cap) has Fiona fix the portal, with the Ape-Vengers and the FF present. Full moon.

MARVEL APES #4 (21-23)
The day after M/APES 4 (2-20). On Earth-616, the simian Speedball recovers at State University and tells Marty and Fiona he wants to stay on their Earth. Green trees in New York.

MARVEL APES #4 (24-25)
Probably the day after M/APES 4 (21-23). This segment occurs :weeks” before M/APES 4 (26). In Los Angeles, the human Roy Reyna and his friends Oso, Pinto, and Vernita look for a shooting star that landed in a park. Roy finds a Mexican wrestling mask. At State University, Marty and Fiona talk about his saving the world. Green trees in Los Angeles and New York.

MARVEL APES #4 (26)
One day, “weeks” after M/APES 4 (24-25). This segment must occur before SECINV 1 (3-11). At Avengers Tower on Earth-616, the monkey Speedball asks to joins the Avengers (Ares, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Wasp, Wonder Man). The Jarvis who directed monkey Speedball to the Avengers BTS must be Skrull Jarvis.

Your breakdown looks good. One part you missed was there was a full moon during MARVEL APES #2 (8-20) when Baron Blood killed Reed. Also the full moons from MARVEL APES #2 (8-20) and MARVEL APES #4 (2-20) occur in the Apeverse, and may not necessarily reflect events on Earth-616.

The appearance of the Apeverse Watcher is only on page 1 of issues #2-4, where he talks directly to the reader and gives a brief recap of what has already occurred. He does not have an appearance or narrative at any other point in the story.

If you also wanted to include the events of the Apeverse Watcher (sans flashbacks to the history of the Apeverse itself), the events of M/APES 1/2-4/2 all appear to occur on the same day, which appears to occur the same day as the final battle in SECINV in Earth-616. Since Wasp-616 died in SECINV 8, the events of M/APES 1/2-4/2 must occur sometime after M/APES 4.

Here are some placement suggestions for the characters. As M/APES itself may have only been a one-shot series with little effect on Earth-616 continuity itself, I am only including characters from Earth-616, as well as the Apeverse Speedball, who has relocated to Earth-616.

3/ In the MCP, Princess Python's name is only given as Zelda, it is actually Zelda DuBois (and possibly Zelda DuBois Day Blank given her brief marriages to Stilt-Man and Gibbon).

M/APES 1 (3:4)-FB. The four villains fight themselves
PPTSS 246 (19:3-20:1) Gibbon and Grizzly figure out a way to capture Spot

Actually there's a little discrepancy : Kangaroo and Spot want to keep the money, Grizzly and Gibbon want to give it back. Kangaroo is knocked-out at the beginning of the fight, before Spot starts to hit Grizzly. So we shouldn't see Kangaroo in the middle of the fight in M/APES 1 (3:4)-FB, unless he is used as an unconscious human shield !
