Spider-Man from Dec. Year 10 to early summer Year 11

Post by newtron »

Continuing from the discussions in this thread. Feel free to merge them if necessary, but I thought this deserved its own topic.

I've reviewed the following very confusing section of Spidey's chronology and have some suggested changes:

SPIDER-MAN/PETER BENJAMIN PARKER
...
ASM 203
DAZZ 1
DAZZ 2
PPTSS 42
FF 218
ASM 204
ASM 205
PPTSS 43
ASM 206
ASM 207
PPTSS 44
PPTSS 45
PPTSS 46
M/TU 79
M/TU 82
M/TU 83
M/TU 84
M/TU 85
S-W 26
DD 160
M/TE 25
S-W 28
S-W 29
ASM 208
M/TU 96
PPTSS 47
PPTSS 48
M/TU 98
ASM 209
M/TU@ 3
M/TU 126/2
M/TU 99
ASM@ 14
M/TU 100
M/TU 101
ASM 210
PPTSS 49
PPTSS 50
PPTSS 51
ASM 211
ASM 212
H@ 11
PPTSS@ 2
...

New suggested chronology, with notes:

SPIDER-MAN/PETER BENJAMIN PARKER
...
ASM 203 - sometime in December
PPTSS 42 - trimester break celebration, last half of December
FF 218 - same night as PPTSS 42

ASM 207-FB (7:2-7:6)
New. The ASM Index says, about this issue:
This story takes place a day before the story in PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN #48, as noted therein, and thus it follows the stories in PETER PARKER #44 and 45, which take place during the Chinese New Year in early February. But Jameson is known to be back at the Daily Bugle before Christmas, as seen in MARVEL TEAM-UP #79. Thus Jameson's return the Bugle, seen in panels 2-6 page 6 of this story, is actually a flashback to about three months ago (Marvel time), told for the sake of simplicity as if it were taking place at the same time as the rest of this story, which actually occurs during a rainy spell in early March (Marvel time)...
Although I don't totally agree with the placement of the main chunk of the issue (and neither does the MCP currently), this part does need to be treated as a flashback to before Christmas. Note that this contradicts cweed4's post, but I think it's a necessary evil because of the new placement of M/TU 79.

M/TU 79
Moved. Takes place December 22, which is crucial to the plot. It can't be where it was before, since its old placement had it well after the new school term started.

ASM 204 - less than a week before the first monday of classes
ASM 205 - Pete still grading papers, new term probably hasn't started

SVH:BOTC
New. As per this thread. Needs to be before Pete starts dating Deb Whitman earnestly, which he does soon. Classes have started.

PPTSS 43
ASM 206
ASM 207
PPTSS 46

PPTSS@ 2 (1-5)
New. This needs to be before PPTSS 48 because the giant teddy bear is shown in Pete's apartment, and it gets thrown out in that issue. PPTSS 47 immediately precedes 48, so this spot is the latest this part of the issue could possibly take place. The biggest problem with this concerns Aunt May. Pete mentions that she's staying at Anna Watson's, and also that he hasn't spoken to her in awhile. Because May hasn't really been heard from at this time for awhile, though, it's entirely possible she's out staying with Anna Watson temporarily and will return by ASM 208. The rest of PPTSS@ 2 must come later, because Peter is working for the Bugle.

PPTSS 47
PPTSS 48
Moved. About a week after PPTSS 43, still fairly early in January. Must come before ASM 208, since it's been weeks since Pete visited May.

S-W 26
DD 160 - Placement is weird because Pete is with MJ, but I'll assume it needs to be here because of DD stuff
M/TE 25 - Winter Olympics, February 12-14 (1980)

PPTSS 44
PPTSS 45
Moved. The Chinese New Year means these stories can't occur before PPTSS 46, which takes place very shortly after classes have started. PPTSS 44-45 run from about two days before Chinese New Year until the day after. In 1980 the Chinese New Year (Year of the Monkey) was February 16, making these stories run basically starting immediately after M/TE 25. This is also consistent with cweed4's suggestion to place these issues out of sequence.

ASM 208
Moved. In S-W 29 Spidey has a significant encounter with Dockery, but in ASM 208 Pete doesn't recognize Dockery. ASM 208 must come before S-W 29.

S-W 28
S-W 29
M/TU 96 - Same day as an unseen adventure, though I believe this to be the Hostess ad "Spider-Man in the Trap" (the second one by that name) -- analysis coming eventually for those that are interested
M/TU 98
ASM 209
M/TU@ 3

SM&H ~ M/TU 126/2
New/changed. Spider-Man & Hulk: What Price a Life (a giveaway in the Chicago Tribune) was the original place that M/TU 126/2 was published, though it had different artwork and some slightly different scenes/dialogue. Both offer bits that aren't in the other, so both should be listed as concurrent.

M/TU 99
ASM@ 14
M/TU 100
M/TU 101
ASM 210
PPTSS 49
PPTSS 50
PPTSS 51
ASM 211 - end of spring term
ASM 212

PPTSS@ 2 (6-32)
Moved. The second part of this story starts with Pete returning to the docks, so I placed it following Pete's adventures at the docks in 212. More specifically, The Rapier makes a comment that he saw Spidey shoot his webbing at the docks the night before, so this needs to be the day after ASM 212.

DAZZ 1
DAZZ 2
Moved. Need to be moved as per this thread. At least for Spider-Man, this does not pose any chronological problems. These issues should come after Pete returns to the Bugle.

M/TU 82
M/TU 83
M/TU 84
M/TU 85
Moved. These issues all occur in quick succession. M/TU 82 splash page puts it immediately after M/TU 79, but this should be considered not an actual part of the story or topical. Pete mentions working at the Bugle for three full days in M/TU 82, and uses the Bugle library/librarian in M/TU 83. The Index comes up with (bad, IMO) explanations for these comments, but I think the stories work equally well here without trying to force as many topical references.

...

And that's it for now! This was a lot of material to go through, so I wouldn't be surprised if I missed or screwed up something really crucial. I am definitely open to discussion about all this, naturally.
