Official Index to the Marvel Universe #1 Errata / Spider-Man

Post by Antonio Gaviño » Wed Feb 25, 2009 3:03 pm

I’ve been meaning to do a list of the misplacements, omissions and errors of the Spider-Man portion of the Index but I’ve come to realize that I’ll never do it if I wait to finish reviewing all the issues to then write the findings down in one sitting, time is not generous to me anymore. What I’ll do is keep updating the list as I check every few issues. Please know that this is by no means something I do to disrespect or diminish the work of those involved in the Index, on the contrary it is just a humble effort to contribute to it.
In green are all additions, in red are appearances that I think should be removed and in blue are explanations or notes. Here goes:

AMAZING FANTASY # 15
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (… 1st but chr last in AF # 17, ’96 fb… also in … SenSM #23, '98 fb, ASM Ann # 25/2, '91 fb; PPSSM # 189/2, '92 fb; also & next in AF # 15/7&10, ’06, PPSM # 60/2, ’81… next in ASM # 400/3, '95… (SpSM # 1, '03) SpSMag # 1/2, '68, SMU # 10, '95 fb; ASMF # 3, '09, AF # 17-18, '96 … TWOS # 2, ’01 fb, PPSM Ann ’01)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Benjamin “Ben” Parker (… 1st but chr last in ASM Ann # 1, '64 fb, chr also in PPSM # 33, '01 fb, SM: PL, '89, ASM # 38, '02 fb, ASM # 200, '80 fb, W:TS # 12, '99 fb, SenSM # 23, '97 fb, ASM Ann # 25/2, '91 fb (the MCP has all these issues slightly out of order, this is how it should look, also the fb to Ben leaving the house after an argument with May occurs in ASM # 38, '02, not # 37 as the MCP states), next in ASM # 500, ‘03), May Reilly Parker (… chr last in ASM # 370/2, '92 fb… chr also in PPSM # 33, '01 fb, ASM # 38, '02 fb, ASM # 200, ’80 fb, PPSSM # 189/2, '92 fb, SM:PL '89, chr next in ASM # 400/3, '95)… Elizabeth “Liz” Allan (… 1st but chr last in MKSM # 9, ’05 fb (I can’t find this fb) AF # 17, '96 fb, chr next in (AF # 17, '96 fb) SM: PL, '89, name unrevealed here, first name revealed in PPSSM Ann # 3, ’81, short name in ASM # 4, ’63, last name in ASM # 5, ’63…) …
VILLAIN: The Burglar (… 1st, chr also in ASM # 200, ’80 fb, chr next in…)
OTHER CHARACTERS: … Seymour O’Reilly (… 1st but chr last in AF #17,’96 fb…) … Dr. Eric Schwinner (GenTech scientist, name unrevealed here, 1st, next in SM:Final Adventure # 1, '95), Anna Watson (bts, chr last in ASM # 259, '84 fb, chr also in SM:PL '89, chr next in UTOS # 16, '96, next in ASM # 15, '64) (she should get a behind the scenes appearance this issue as she is the neighbor that is said to be helping May after Ben was shot, as revealed in SM:PL '89)
NOTE: … Seymour O’Reilly’s first name revealed in ASM # 17, ’64, last name in MKSM #8, ’05… Dr. Schwinner's name revealed in SM:Final Adventure # 1, '95.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 1
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (also in FF Ann # 1/2, '63)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Liz Allan (chr last in (AF # 18, ’96) ASMF # 3, '09)… John Jonah Jameson (… chr next in PPSSM # 225, ’95 fb (the scene on this flashback with Jonah looking at Peter's photos is also depicted in ASM # 2 but there we only see their silhouettes whereas in the fb we see a closer take; the captions are almost the same so this should qualify better as an also in appearance for both characters in the following issue, so I've made the appropriate changes) UTOS # 12, '96 fb (more on this below)), May Parker (chr last in (AF # 18, ’96 fb) PPSM Ann ’01)

2ND STORY
GUEST STARS: Fantastic Four (… also in FF Ann # 1/2, '63)…Thing (… chr next inFF # 520, '05 fb…)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 2
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (chr also in PPSSM # 225, ’95 fb)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: J. Jonah Jameson (chr also in PPSSM # 225, ’95 fb) (chr next in SMU # 18, '97 fb) (if this one panel fb is not the same scene as ASM #3 5:8 then why isn’t Peter also having an appearance since he also appears there? Personally I think this should be removed because it doesn't add anything new), Eleonore Brant (Jameson's secretary, name unrevealed here, 1st, chr last & next in UTOS # 12, '96) Betty Brant (1st but chr last in UTOS # 12, '96 fb, name unrevealed here) (I'm going to make a case for this being the first appearance for Betty instead of her mother's, normally in cases like this I would leave things like they stand but based on the evidence I'll make an exception. Let's see, the hair style and hair color of the character in question are the same as Betty's in ASM # 4, not grey as Eleonore's in UTOS # 12 fb, we see a young looking face instead of an old one, she is not wearing glasses as Eleonore in the fb. Betty gets the job at the Bugle sometime after ASM # 1 as we can deduce by the framed Daily Bugle front page from that issue hanging on the wall as she sees a secretary quit on Jameson in UTOS # 12 fb, so her mother has been in the hospital for a while by this point but there's no evidence that her accident happens after ASM # 2. Placing Betty's first day at the Bugle here gives also an appearance to Jameson as noted above on his entry for ASM # 1)... Flash Thompson (chr last in ASMF # 3, '09)...
NOTES: …(Eleonore Brant's full name revealed in OHMU:SM '07) Betty Brant's last name revealed in ASM # 4, '63, first name in ASM # 5, '63.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 3
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (also in …, next in Alias # 23, '03 fb)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: J. Jonah Jameson (also in SMU # 18, '97 fb) (same reason as in ASM # 2, same panel flashback) … Flash Thompson (chr next in Alias # 23, '03 fb), Liz Allan
VILLAIN: … Charles "Charlie" H. Buchanan (as noted by Paul B. in a previous post) (formal name unrevealed here) and his two criminal associates (1st)
OTHER CHARACTERS: Dr. Kevin Hunt (only app, name unrevealed here)
NOTE: Charlie's last name revealed in SM # 39, '93, formal first name and middle initial in SM # 40, '93, Dr. Hunt's name revealed in SMU # 18, '97

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 4
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Betty Brant (1st but chr last in UTOS # 12, '96 fb, 1st name unrevealed here) (see comments for issue # 2)
VILLAIN: Sandman (… chr next BTS (he is not BTS in FNSM Ann # 1, he does appears there) in FNSM Ann # 1, '07 …), Charlie Buchanan (next in SM # 38, '93 fb) and his two criminal associates
OTHER CHARACTERS: Principal Davis (1st but chr last in ASMF # 3, '09, next in …), Jessica Jones (classmate, 1st (as revealed in ASM # 601/2, '09), chr last and next in Alias # 23, '03 fb (between pages 14 and 15, after she gets back to school from her coma but before capturing the Scorpion)), Seymour O'Reilly …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 5
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in … (ASM # 38, '02 fb) SM # 38, '93 fb…)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Flash Thompson (…), Liz Allan, May Parker…

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 6
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Flash Thompson, May Parker (both chr next in UTOS # 1, '95), Liz Allan, Betty Brant (all four chr next in UTOS # 1, '95)
VILLAIN: The Lizard (… chr last in PPSSM #238, '96 fb…)
OTHER CHARACTERS: Martha connors (…), William "Billy" Connors (1st for both, chr last in PPSSM # 238, '96 fb…)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 7
FETURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in FNSM # 5, '06 (The Vulture is in prison from ASM # 2 to ASM # 7 and Peter is in Senior high and wearing glasses in FNSM # 5 (Flash also appears) so they must appear there before ASM # 8. Since we don't see the Vulture taken back to prison at the end of ASM # 7 he probably manages to get free from Spidey's webbing and then fight him again in FNSM # 5), IM: IA # 2, '98 …)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: J. Jonah Jameson, May Parker (both chr next in UTOS # 3, '95, next in ASM # 9, '64), Betty Brant (all three chr next in UTOS # 3, '95, next in ASM # 9, '64), Flash Thompson (chr next in S/SM # 1, '01 fb) (Flash is given an appearance in this fb and Peter isn't even though he is in the same scene, not that it matters in this case. I'm guessing the reasoning to place this fb here was that Peter's glasses break in ASM # 8 and they look intact in this fb, although he is not wearing them. Well, the placement is wrong: The Sentry tells Spider-Man that the Void has been working with the Kingpin and Spidey knows the Kingpin better than most; by the time of ASM # 7-8 Spider-Man hasn't even met the Kingpin yet. The flashbacks in S/SM # 1 happen at two or three different instances in time; the first with Doc Ock fighting Spidey while being followed by the Sentry and probably the following day, where Flash appears; the second instance "months" later with the Sentry showing up at Peter's house, we see the unbroken glasses here, to recruit Spidey's help against the Void and the Kingpin and the following dawn with Peter being the first to photograph the Sentry; and probably a third segment the following days or weeks with Robert Reynolds revealed as the Sentry with Peter's picture and Peter attending the Pulitzer's. So, with that in mind we'll leave placement of these flashbacks for when we get to later issues and find more appropriate places for them given the clues at hand) (chr next in FNSM # 5, '06), Liz Allan (chr next in UTOS # 3, '95, all five chr last in UTOS # 2, '95) (At this point I'm a little confused as to what criteria is being used to determine when to list a "last in" appearance for supporting characters, I've noticed they list them sometimes and some other times they don't; I know they omit them if the previous appearance was a few issues earlier in the same series but in most cases they omit them even if there was a "chr last in" appearance. If somebody can clarify that for me I would appreciate it, I would hate to be pointing out something as an omission when it was meant to be that way in the first place)
VILLAIN: Vulture (… chr next in (UTOS # 5, '96) FNSM # 5, '06, next in …)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 8
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (also in PP:SM # 20, '00 fb (if the Living Brain is given an appearance for the scene on this flashback so should Spidey), next in UTOS # 4 ('96) '95…)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Liz Allan (chr next in UTOS # ( 3, '96) 4, '95) (by the way, the MCP makes the same mistake placing Liz Allan's appearance in UTOS # 3 after her appearance in ASM # 8)
VILLAIN: The Living Brain (… chr next in PP:SM # 20, '00 fb, next in …), two unnamed technicians (chr next in PP:SM # 20, '00 fb)

2nd STORY
OTHER CHARACTERS: The Thing (next in ST # 129, '65), Invisible Girl, Mr. Fantastic (all last in FF # 34, '65, chr next in UTOS Ann '96, latter two next in Av # 13), Doris "Dorrie" Evans (chr next in ST # 129, '65)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 9
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Betty Brant, J. Jonah Jameson (…), May Parker (all three chr last in UTOS # 4, '95)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 10
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Flash Thompson (chr also in UTOS # 5-7, '96, chr next in UTOS # 8, '96), May Parker (both chr next in UTOS # 5, '96) (chr also in UTOS # 5, '96), Liz Allan (chr next in UTOS # 5, '96, chr also in UTOS # 5-7, '96, next in ASM # 12, '64), Betty Brant (chr next in UTOS # 6, '96), J. Jonah Jameson (…), (both chr last in UTOS # 7, '96) (at this point I can tell that they are not listing chr last in appearances for May, Liz, Flash, Betty or Jameson but they are doing it for every other character which seems weird to me, so for the sake of consistency I am going to keep pointing out their chr last in appearances as omissions)
VILLAINS: The Big Man (… 1st but chr last in UTOS # 4, '95, chr also as Foswell in UTOS # 7, '96, next …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 11
VILLAINS: Dr. Octopus (… chr last in Def # 10, '01) (the only problem that I have with placing Ock's appearance in Def # 10 here is that he is in prison between ASM # 3 and ASM # 11, so if he gets picked up out of time at some point between those issues to appear in Def # 10 how come he is wearing a suit instead of a prison uniform? I'm sure a better place can be found later in his chronology)
OTHER CHARACTERS: Bennett Brant (… chr last in UTOS # 12, '96 fb…)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 12
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (also in UTOS # 10, '96, next in UTOS # 11-12, SMFamily # 3, '07, (as suggested by JLH when he did his analysis of this book, this story should occur some time prior to DD # 2, since it gives Electro a reason to want to break into the Baxter Building; UTOS # 15 occurs the day after DD # 2 so it has to come before that, the story also has to take place after Betty Brant returns to the Bugle with a new heirdo in ASM # 12 and after Spidey fails to capture Electro in UTOS # 11; but, for Johnny to say that nobody really knows anything about Spidey, it probably happens before UTOS # 13 where the Torch consoles him after Sally Avril's death. All that places the FF here after MCP # 18/4 fb and, all but the Torch, before ST 120) UTOS # 13, '96)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: J. Jonah Jameson (chr last in UTOS # 9, '96, chr also in UTOS # 10, '96), May Parker, Flash Thompson (chr last in UTOS # 10, '96) (all chr next in UTOS # 11, '96), Betty Brant (chr also in UTOS # 10, '96), Liz Allan (both chr next in UTOS # 10, '96) (chr last in UTOS # 10, '96) (all five chr next in UTOS # 11, '96) (since Flash and Liz appear chr last in the same book I'm sure this entry can be rearranged to save space)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 13
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: J. Jonah Jameson (chr last in SMFamily # 3, '07), Flash Thompson, Betty Brant, Liz Allan, May Parker (last four chr last in UTOS # 13, '96, all four chr next in UTOS # 14, '96) (Jameson does not appear in UTOS # 14), Dexter Bennet ? (1st ?, Daily Bugle staff member ?, next in ASM 548) (the guy on page 14, panel 8 looks amazingly like him, bow tie included)
VILLAIN: Mysterio (… chr last in PPSSM # 51, '81 fb…)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 14
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … May Parker (chr next in UTOS # 16, '96)
NOTE: The Green Goblin's identity revealed in ASM # 39, '66 but name revealed in ASM # 37, '66

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 15
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (… next in UTOS # 17, ('96) '97…)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Betty Brant (chr next in UTOS # 17, '97), May Parker (chr next in UTOS # 17, '96) (chr last, also & next in SenSMAnn '96), Mr. Warren (… next in MKSM # 7, '04) …
VILLAINS: Kraven the Hunter (… 1st but chr last in SenSMAnn '96), the Chameleon (both chr also & next in SenSMAnn '96, next in TOS # 58, '64) (Jameson, Betty, Liz and Flash could as well have an also in appearance in SenSMAnn '96 but the scenes where they appear are pretty much the same as already depicted in ASM # 15, whereas Spidey, May, Kraven and the Chameleon are all shown in the annual in previously unseen scenes)
NOTE: … Anna Watson's first name revealed in ASM # 18, '64, middle name in ASM # 41, '66.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 16
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: J. Jonah Jameson, May Parker (chr last in UTOS # 17, '97, both next in …) …
VILLAINS: … the Great Gambonnos (1st, Luigi & Ernesto Gambono, stage name revealed in ASM # 22, '65, first names in LCPM # 24, '75…) …
OTHER CHARACTERS: … Rajah (chr last in HULK # 3, '62, chr next in Hulk # 292, '84)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL # 1
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: May Parker, Flash Thompson, Liz Allan, Betty Brant (last three chr last in UTOS # 18, '97), J. Jonah Jameson (all last in …)
VILLAINS: … Doctor Octopus (last in ASM # 12, '64, chr last in SMU # 18, '97 fb, chr next in …), Electro (last in DD # 2, '62, chr next in AvClassic # 11/2, '08, next in …) … the Vulture (… chr next in (FNSM #5, '06) (this placement is wrong, the Vulture's appearance in FNSM # 5, and also Flash and Spidey's there go in between isssues 7 and 8 of ASM, I have updated their entries for issue 7 and explained the reasons there) UTOS # 20, '97, next in …) …
OTHER CHARACTERS: … Dr. Strange (… chr last in MDS # 4/2, '03… next in ST # 125/2, '65)… Giant-Man (chr last in SMU # 18, '97 fb, all last in …), Iron Man (… chr last in SMU # 18, '97 fb), Professor X, Marvel girl (both between … chr next in X # 308, '94 fb) … Mr. Fantastic (… chr last in SMU # 18, '97 fb) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 17
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Liz Allan, J. Jonah Jameson, Betty Brant, May Parker, Flash Thompson (all last in ASM Ann # 1, '64, chr last in UTOS # 19, '97, all but Jameson chr next in UTOS # 20, '97) (Jameson appears next in the first page of ASM # 18 then in UTOS # 20), Anna Watson (bts, last in ASM # 15, '64, chr last in UTOS # 19, '97, chr next in UTOS # 20, '97) (she is on the phone talking to May about canceling MJ's date to Peter because of a bad cold; MJ should probably get a behind the scenes appearance here since Anna says that she might try dressing up after hearing Peter is disappointed)
VILLAINS: Green Goblin (… chr next in UTOS # 20, '97) (he appears next in the second page of ASM # 18 then in UTOS # 20)
GUEST APPEARANCE: Human Torch (… chr last in ST # 1, '94 fb)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 18
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Flash Thompson (… chr last in UTOS # 21, '97; chr next in UTOS # 22, '97), J. Jonah Jameson (chr also in UTOS # 20, '97; chr next in UTOS # 22, '97), May Parker (chr last in UTOS # 21, '97; (all) chr also in UTOS # 22, '97), … Anna Watson (… chr last in UTOS # 21, '97, (the MCP doesn't list her for this issue, btw) (also) chr next in UTOS # 22, '97, …), Betty Brant (chr last in UTOS # 21, '97), Liz Allan (chr last in UTOS # 21, '97, (also) chr next in UTOS # 22, '97, next in ASM # 20, '65) (she does appear next in ASM # 19 although the MCP and the old Spider-man index don't list her)
GUEST APPEARANCE: Human Torch (last in ST # 126, '64, chr last in ST # 1, '94) (this is repeated from the previous issue) (next in ST # 127, '64)
OTHER CHARACTERS: Thing (… chr last in ST # 1, '94 fb …) … Daredevil (between (DD # 3) ASM # 16 & DD # 4, '64 …), the Green Goblin (… chr (also) next in UTOS # 22, '97 …) … the Vulture (… chr last and next in UTOS # 20, '97 …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 19
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Liz Allan
OTHER CHARACTERS: MacDonald "Mac" Gargan (… name revealed in the next issue, chr last in SMU # 13, '96 fb), Invisible Girl (vo, next in FF Ann # 2) (an unidentified member of the Fantastic 4 talks to Johny Storm in the Baxter Building at the end of this story, the MCP gives the appearance to Sue and by the speech pattern that's a good guess)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 20
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in WOSM # 81, '91 fb, (this fb which occurs in the first few months of Peter as Spider-Man has already been placed after AF # 15) … Av # 11, '64, AvClassic # 11/2, '08 (the second story with Spidey battling Electro and meant to occur between Av # 11 & # 12 should go here also, I've added a chr next appearance to Electro's entry for ASM Ann # 1; Cap and Giant-Man also appear and Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and the Enchantress appear bts but neither concerns this index; I can say that Iron Man is there probably after TOS # 63, '65))

*Cross-referencing data with the MCP I noticed a couple of characters they don't mention in the Index, so they've been added to their respective slots; they are Dr. Eric Schwinner in AF # 15 and Rajah from de Circus of Crime in ASM # 16. BTW I also noticed the MCP lists Ned Leeds chr next app after ASM # 20 as Mv # 2, which isn't possible since he sees Betty and Peter for the first time after being back from Europe in ASM # 29; the character in Mv # 2 just can't be Ned. The Index got it right on this one.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 21
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Betty Brant, Flash Thompson, J. Jonah Jameson (all three chr last in UTOS Ann '97), May Parker …

*Since the 2nd story in ASM # 8 goes between issues 21 & 22 I have just checked it and added the corrections to its entry.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 22
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in UTOS # 24, '97, FF # 36, SM/HT # 1, '05 (more on this on issue 24's entry))
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Liz Allan (chr last in UTOS Ann '96) … Betty Brant (chr next in SM/HT # 1, '05), J. Jonah Jameson (chr next in Mv # 2, '94)
VILLAINS: … Princess Python (Zelda DuBois, 1st, given name revealed in OHMU # 2, '83, …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 23
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: May Parker (chr last in SM/HT # 1, '05, …), J. Jonah Jameson (chr last in SM/HT # 1, '05, chr next in (Mv # 2, '94) (Jonah appearance here precedes Sue and Reed's engagement party in FF # 36, so this app should be moved back to after ASM # 22, MCP error also) UTOS # 25, '97)…
VILLAINS: Green Goblin (… chr last in (UTOS # 22, '97) UTOS Ann '97, chr next in (UTOS Ann '97) UTOS # 25, '97 (the MCP makes the same mistake), next in …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 24
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in SM/HT # 1, '05) (This is wrong, the first issue of this mini takes more than three days and ASM # 25 happens the day after ASM # 24, so it can't go between those issues, it doesn't read right on that place, unfortunately it can't go anywhere after ASM # 25 either (I won't elaborate on the reasons). At the end of SM/HT # 1 Jonah buys pictures from Peter who is in good terms with Betty, so it wouldn’t fit between issues 23 & 24 because in those issues Peter is mad at Betty and he also says at the start of issue 24 he hasn’t sold any pictures to Jonah in weeks; in SM/HT # 1 Paste Pot Pete decides to change his name, so the issue happens at some point between FF # 36 where he still uses that name and FF # 38 where he is now called the Trapster. Following ASM # 22 Spidey is in FF # 36 and the only place left would be after that where it actually fits perfectly but for one reason: at the beginning of SM/HT # 1 Peter is trying to sell Jonah pictures of Spider-Man fighting Mysterio. Now, this is not the same fight as in ASM # 24 (Peter doesn't take pictures of that one where Mysterio is disguised as Ludwig Rinehart); in these pictures we see Mysterio with his fish bowl costume, this is a previously unseen fight. There's something Mysterio says in ASM # 24 that might explain the fight from SM/HT happening previously: "I knew he (Spidey) wouldn't be suspicious (of Rinehart being Mysterio) if I played my cards right". So, he probably feigned a defeat as Mysterio to throw Spidey off about Rinehart's real identity. Other than for Spidey's supporting cast I don't think it should be a problem relocating the issue)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … May Parker (chr next in SM/HT # 1, '05), Liz Allan, Flash Thompson (both chr last in UTOS # 25, '97)
OTHER CHARACTERS: Connie ((only app) 1st …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 25 (Since I'm at it I'll point out that the MCP gives an appearance to Frederick Foswell for this issue when it shouldn't)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Mary Jane Watson (… chr next in ASM # 259, '84 fb), Betty Brant (next in ASM # 27, '65) (this needs to be removed, she appears next in ASM # 26)
OTHER CHARACTERS: Connie (last app to date)
NOTE: Spencer Smythe's first name revealed in ASM # 28, '65

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 26
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Flash Thompson (chr next in (Alias # 23, '03 fb) (more on this shortly) Web:TS # 7, '99, next in …) … Mr. Davis (last in ASM # 4, '63, (btw, the MCP has him wrongly in issue # 8 instead of # 4) next in …) … Betty Brant
VILLAINS: The Crime Master (… 1st, name revealed in the following issue …) …
OTHER CHARACTERS: (Barney Bushkin (1st, editor at the Daily Globe, next in DHKF # 22, '76), three police officers (Sam, Dave named), Daily Globe staff) (the OTHER CHARACTERS entries for issues 26 & 27 are switched) Seymour O'Reilly (next in ASM Ann # 17, '83), Midtown High School students, Frankestein's Monster (costume in shop)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 27
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in Web:TS # 7-9, '99, (the story in W:TS # 7-9 was written by one of those writers who don't care much about chronology so anywhere you place it it won't fit quite right; it happens on the days leading to Prom night on June 25th, with Graduation day still to come, they are two different events, so there's no need to shoe-horn the three issues between pages of ASM # 28 like it's been done; placing them between issues 27 & 28 of ASM at least gives us a better reading flow. According to Olshevsky FF Ann # 3 happens in late June and so it should occur after W:TS # 7-9) FF Ann # 3, '65, then M:H&L '96; Mv # (3) 2, '94 (he does not appear in Mv # 3 (9) but he does in Mv # 2 (33) as Peter Parker taking a picture of Reed and Sue's wedding kiss; Mv # 3 (page 9) shows Kraven disguised as Spider-Man, fleeing after attacking Jonah Jameson, this is a scene from ASM # 34), Alias # 23, '03 fb (this issue just can't be placed here; as revealed in ASM # 601/2 Jessica Jones recovers from her coma and goes back to school before Spidey's fight to the Sandman in ASM # 4, Galactus and the Silver Surfer's appearances in Alias # 22 are art errors and shouldn't be considered to decide placement of issues 22 & 23 of that series))
OTHER CHARACTERS: (Seymour O'Reilly (next in ASM Ann # 17, '83), Midtown High School students, Frankestein's Monster (costume in shop)) Barney Bushkin (1st, editor at the Daily Globe, chr last and next in Mv # 2, '94 (the Index is missing this part), next in DHKF # 22, '76), three police officers (Sam, Dave named), Daily Globe staff

Jonah Jameson (chr last in Mv # 2 (btw, prior to that he appears in M:H&L '96, an app the MCP doesn't mention) (chr next in Mv # 3, '94) (he appears in Mv # 3 (9) between pages of ASM # 34))
OTHER CHARACTERS: … Doris Raxton Allan ((only app) 1st but chr last in Web:TS # 9, 99, …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 29
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Betty Brant (chr last in Mv # 2, '94)
VILLAINS: Scorpion (last in ASM # 20, '65, chr last in SMU # 13, '96, (the scenes from the fb in SMU # 13 all happen before ASM # 19, nothing after issue # 20) chr next in …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 30
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Frederick Foswell (also as Patch)
VILLAINS: … Dr. Octopus ((bts) vo, (we 'hear' his voice or to put it clearer: we can read what he says on the phone to a member of his gang) as the "Master Planner") …
OTHER CHARACTERS: Betty Brant's friend (last app to date)
NOTE: … The Master Planner's gang is incorrectly described to be working for the Cat in this story. (Olshevski)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 31
FEATURE CHARACTE: Spider-Man (chr next in ASM # 148, '75 fb) (see Gwen's entry)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Gwendolyne "Gwen" Stacy (… chr last in UTOS # 25, '97, chr also in ASM # 149, '75 fb and WOSM # 125, '95 fb, (fbs to the day Miles Warren first sees Gwen, although technically the first day he sees her occurs in UTOS # 25) chr next in ASM # 148, '75 fb (the MCP has this fb of Anthony Serba collecting blood samples after ASM # 34, but since the Index places it after this issue so it should for Peter who is right behind Gwen on the line, Professor Warren is in the scene as well and not bts as the MCP has him), Professor Miles Warren (… chr last in ASM # 149, '75 fb …) …
VILLAINS: Dr. Octopus ((bts) vo, (same as his previous appearance, we can read his dialogue) as "Master Planner") …
OTHER CHARACTERS: Dean Corliss (… dean of ESU, next in ASM # 70, '69), May's unidentified hospital doctor (1st)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 32
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Curt Connors (last in ASM # 6, '63, chr last in UTOS # 24, '97)
VILLAINS: Doctor Octopus (… last in … chr next in ASM # 53, '67 fb, (his app in S/SM # 1 follows his escape from his collapsed hideout shown in this fb but precedes ASM 53 since he is still wearing his green and yellow costume in S/SM, the same he does in ASM # 32, to change to an all green variation in ASM # 53) next in ASM # 53, '67) …
OTHER CHARACTERS: May's hospital doctor, Ben …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 33
OTHER CHARACTERS: … May's hospital doctor, Dr. Octopus (bts) (the MCP erroneously gives him a full app for this issue)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 34
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (chr also in ASM # 47, '67 fb) (this fb reveals that Kraven and Spider-Man fought prior to the fight depicted in this issue, and should go between pages 6 & 7, after Kraven arrives in America but before he decides to impersonate Spidey to attack Jameson as a way to lure the wallcrawler for the battle that ends up in Kraven's defeat, Kraven must have decided on this tactic after Spidey escaped from him in the fb fight)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … Anna Watson (chr next bts in Web:TS # 1, '99, next in ASM # (39) 40, '66), Gwen Stacy (chr last in ASM # 149, '79 fb) (this fb goes between panels of ASM # 31) … Frederick Foswell (chr last in Web:TS # 3, '99; (this is repeated from his entry on ASM # 37) chr next in Mv # 3, '94, (pages 12-14, 23 and 44-45) next in …), J. Jonah Jameson (chr also and next in Mv # 3, '94) (pages 9 & 23-43 respectively, he is not on page 19 as the MCP states)
VILLAINS: Kraven the Hunter (last in … chr also in ASM # 47, '67 fb and Mv # 3, '94 fb, (page 9, this has to be a flashback since Jonah's new secretary who appears earlier in Mv # 3 wasn't hired until the end of ASM # 34, the fb goes between panels 3 and 4 of page 8 of this issue) next in …) … Green Goblin (bts, also as Norman Osborn, last in … chr also in ASM # 47, '67 fb where he appears also as Norman Osborn, next in …)
OTHER CHARACTERS: J. Jonah Jameson's unidentified secretary (1st, chr next in Mv # 3, '94) … May's unidentified doctor (last app to date)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 35
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Gwen Stacy (next in ASM # 38, '66) (she does not appear in ASM # 35)
OTHER CHARACTERS: … Judge Hizzoner (only app)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 36
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in Mv # 3, '94, then NW # 3, ('05))
OTHER CHARACTERS: Sally Green (…) (she probably appears chr next in S/SM # 1 fb but that can't be confirmed)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 37
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in DD # 16-17, '66, then S/SM # 1, '01 fb (pages 4-9p4, in this fb Octavius is wearing his green and yellow outfit first seen in ASM # 32, Peter is wearing a waistcoat which he started doing to go to college, and Flash is still bothering Peter; so, this fb should happen not too long after ASM # 32, probably before ASM # 39 where Peter's classmates decide to act friendly to him and long enough before ASM # 53 for Doc Ock to remember their fight in ASM # 32 and not the little encounter in this fb as their last battle, it also happens 'months' before S/SM # 1 fb pages 9p5-20p2))
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Frederick Foswell (… chr (last) next in Web:TS # 3, '99 …), J. Jonah Jameson (chr last in Alias # 23, '03 fb (he is on TV before Jessica Jones leaves home to eventually catch the Scorpion) chr next in (Mv # 3, '94) DD # 16, '66) … Flash Thompson (chr next in S/SM # 1, '01 fb)
OTHER CHARACTERS: Max Young (… (only app to date) 1st, chr next in ASM # 372, '93) (he probably appears in ASM # 369 also but that can't be confirmed; he is bts in ASM # 370 and vo in ASM # 371 although the MCP gives him full appearances for these last two issues)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 38
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (also and next in Web:TS # 1, '99, then Web:TS # 2-3, '99)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Joe Smith (… chr (next) also in Web;TS # 1, '99, chr next in Web:TS # 2, 99, next in …) … May Parker (last in DD # 17, '66; chr last in S/SM # 1, '01 fb, chr also and next in Web:TS # 1, '99) …
VILLAINS: Norman Osborn (chr next bts in Web:TS # 1, '99) (Norman does not appear in Web:TS # 1, at best he gets a bts app for being 'out of town for the week' if that counts as a bts)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 39
OTHER CHARACTERS: Miles Warren (chr last in SM # 51, '94, (his app in SM # 51 goes right before AMS # 139 not ASM # 39) next in …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 40 (The scenes from this and some of the subsequent issues all the way up to issue 49 are depicted in a slighty different way and/or order, as narrated by Peter Parker from a more current period in his chronology, in the Spider-Man: Blue miniseries, which also shows previously unseen events and revealing facts. The passing of more than a decade between the time when Peter narrates the story and the events recalled by him might be the reason he won't remember them as they originally happened but the framing sequence shouldn't have problems fitting in Spidey's chronology around the mini's publication time. For now, placement of those previously unseen scenes shown in SM: Blue is going to be put on hold)
OTHER CHARACTERS: … Miss Brown ((mention only) bts (this is probably not even worth mentioning, for a character who doesn't even get an actual appearance to date but she is not just mentioned but addressed to by Jonah, which should put her behind the scenes), Jameson's new secretary)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 41
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in ASM Ann # 3, '66, ASM # 148, fb, '75 (the MCP places this fb in two different spots for the characters appearing in it and the Index repeats the mistake, both sources place it here for Peter but in different places for Gwen; since it's already been placed between issues 31 & 34 for Gwen and Prof. Warren this needs to be removed))
VILLAIN: The Rhino (1st, chr last in ASM # 43, '66 fb …)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANN # 3
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in ASM # 148, '75 fb, (same reason as for issue 41) ASM # 42, '66)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 42
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … May Parker (chr also in SM:PL '89)
OTHER CHARACTERS: … Tony Stark (bts) (he is here probably before his appearance in ST # 156, '67), two federal agents

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 43
VILLAINS: Rhino (chr also in PPSM # 36, '01 fb, chr next in …) …

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 44
OTHER CHARACTERS: … two police officers (Sam named)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 45

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 46
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … J. Jonah Jameson (next in ASM # 48, '67)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 47
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in DD # 27, '67 then ST # 156, '67, then SM # 19, '92 fb) (Peter and Gwen are already a couple in this flashback, and they are still not one for the next few issues of ASM, so this has to be moved to a future spot in their chronologies)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … J. Jonah Jameson, Gwen Stacy (chr next in SM # 19, '92)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 48

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 49
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in MSH # 14, '68, ASM Ann # 4, '67) (see comments for this annual)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … J. Jonah Jameson (next in ASM Ann # 4, '67) (see comments for this annual)
VILLAINS: … Kraven the Hunter (… chr next in (ASM Ann '96) XM/SM # 1, '09 (it is understandable they wouldn't mention this issue as Kraven's chr next appearance since it was published at about the same time as the Index), next in AT # 1, '70) and his tiger Rajah ((only app) 1st, next in ASM Ann '96 fb)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL # 4 (I'm going against the establishment on this one; this annual happens over the course of four or more days, which would make it unlikely to fit between issues 52 & 53 of ASM. ASM # 53 opens up with Spider-Man reading Jonah's editorial about Foswell's death, probably the day after ASM # 52. There's nothing preventing this annual from happening between ASM # 49 and ASM # 50, Mysterio's and the Wizard's placement remain the same, the Human Torch appears here during the several weeks that go by between issues 64 & 65 of FF)
FEATURE CHARACTER: Spider-Man (next in ASM # (53) 50, '67)
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: J. Jonah Jameson (between ASM # (52) 49, '67 & ASM # (53) 50, '67)
GUEST APPEARANCE: Human Torch (between (pages of) FF # (68) 64, '67 and FF # 65, '67)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 50
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: … J. Jonah Jameson (last in ASM Ann # 4, '67)
VILLAINS: The Kingpin (… chr last in DD # 13, '00 fb) … Flint (1st, name revealed next issue (Olshevsky)…) …
OTHER CHARACTERS: Johnny Carson (next in DD # 46, '68)

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN # 51
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS: Joseph "Robbie" Robertson (1st app, but chr last in (PY1 # 2, '95) (his app in PY1 # 2 goes between issue 85 & 86 of ASM as noted in the second issue of the Index) M:H&L '96 …) …
NOTES: Joseph Robertson's first name revealed in ASM # 54. '67, last name and nickname revealed next issue (Olshevsky))

Antonio,

I've changed to subject of this thread to restrict discussion to the first issue.

I've noticed they don't mention bts appearances on cases like that in the index, so I'm not going to bother either, I'll just mention bts ommisions if the presence of the character is actually felt and/or affects the story.

When you've reached the point when you want to talk about issue 2, just start a new thread.

*I started using the vo (voice only) tag to distinguish from full or behind the scenes appearances as required on the last few issues for Betty Brant (ASM # 27) and Doctor Octopus (ASM # 30-31).

Alias # 23, '03 fb (we all know Bendis and how much he loves us chronologists; well, the segment of this issue just can't happen here, this is why: Mv # 3 (page 9) shows Kraven disguised as Spider-Man, fleeing after attacking Jonah Jameson, this is a scene from ASM # 34 (goes between panels 3 and 4 of page 8) that happens before the Galactus fight against the Fantastic Four in FF # 50 which is the time when Jessica is shown waking up from her comma in Alias # 22 before she goes back to Midtown high school in Alias # 23, where we see Peter and Flash who should be in ESU by then. As far as we know Jessica doesn't go to ESU, so that is in fact Midtown High, she must be there making up for the time she missed by being in a comma for six months. What are Flash and Peter doing there when they should be at ESU? Since they both won scholarships they could have been invited to give an encouragement speech or something of that nature at their old high school, we don't see either of them taking any classes after all)
Sigh. This scene's been a bone of contention since it was published. In Marvel continuity, the Galactus attack definitively happens after Peter graduates high school.

And yet ... just trust me: this chronological placement is Marvel's official word on the subject.

If it helps, just pretend that Galactus isn't there.

The whole Index is Marvel's official word, does that mean I shouldn't bother pointing out what are obviously mistakes?

No, of course not! I'm just letting you know that that one's not a "mistake". It was discussed and decided internally.
