Coming from Marvel in September

Post by JD »

Okay, I'm quite late with this, but but Marvel decided to hold out information about most of their big september books from the online solicitations (they announced them in a con the following weekend). I've had to wait for a copy of Marvel Previews to get the full picture.

So for the partial solicitations at Newsarama, as usual : http://www.newsarama.com/comics/090616- ... tions.html
If you prefer Comic Book Resources, here you go : http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page ... e&id=21603
Or you could go directly to the Marvel website : http://www.marvel.com/catalog/?date=2009-09 (they still haven't bothered with updating their website !)

I've put the "new" stuff in blue.

So, without further ado :

NEW SERIES

- SPIDER-WOMAN #1, by Bendis and Maleev. Will they actually ship it this time around ?

- VENGEANCE OF THE MOON KNIGHT #1, by Hurwitz and Opena, is set to put the title character against Osborn. How original.

- CRIMINAL: THE SINNERS #1, by Brubaker and Philips, is the return of the Icon series.

NEW MINISERIES

- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN PRESENTS: ANTI-VENOM—NEW WAYS TO LIVE #1 (of 3), by Wells and Siqueira. Isn't it a bit late for an Anti-Venom spin-off ?

- SPIDER-MAN: THE CLONE SAGA #1 (of 6), by Mackie, DeFalco and Nauck. Because you demanded it : a reimagining of the Clone Saga by its original writers, before their plans were derailed by marketing. Out of continuity, of course.

- NOMAD: GIRL WITHOUT A WORLD #1 (of 4), by McKeever and Baldeon, features the female Bucky from the Heroes Reborn world (who was transported to the main MU at the end of ONSLAUGHT REBORN and briefly appeared in CA 600)

- THE TORCH #1 (of 8), by Carey, Ross and Berkenkotter. A revival of the original Human Torch from the 40s. He's currently dead, but androids are easier to revive. I think this was set up a bit in Avengers/Invaders.

- ULTIMATE COMICS ARMOR WARS #1 (of 4), by Ellis and Kurth : an Ultimate Iron Man mini by another name, basically.

- ENDER'S GAME: COMMAND SCHOOL #1 (of 5), by Yost and Ferry, and ENDER'S SHADOW: COMMAND SCHOOL #1 (of 5), by Carey and Fiumura : the next string of OSC adaptations.

- MARVEL SUPER HERO SQUAD #1 (of 4), by Tobin and Brizuela. Out of continuity.

- STARR THE SLAYER #1 (of 4), by Way & Corben : MAX.

- STRANGE TALES #1 (of 3), the long-delayed "indie" anthology title. Includes a serialisation of Peter Bagge's Incorrigible Hulk. MAX, by the way.

ONESHOTS

- DARK AVENGERS/UNCANNY X-MEN: EXODUS, by Fraction & Deodato, concludes the 6-part crossover.
- DARK X-MEN: THE CONFESSION, by Kyle, Yost and "To Be Announced", is an epilogue.

- DARK REIGN: THE LIST is a pseudo-crossover of one-shots featuring Norman Osborn taking on the protagonists of various series, by the regular writers of these series and some "super-star" artists. There's also some preview material at the endto pad out the page count and price. This month :
* DARK REIGN: THE LIST - AVENGERS, by Bendis and Djurdjevic
* DARK REIGN: THE LIST - DAREDEVIL, by new writer Diggle and Tan
* DARK REIGN: THE LIST - X-MEN, by Fraction and Davis

- MARVEL ZOMBIES RETURN is the latest incarnation of the joke, picking up on the big-name characters after MZ2, is constituted of 5 one-shots published weekly :
* MARVEL ZOMBIES RETURN: SPIDER-MAN, by Van Lente and Dragotta
* MARVEL ZOMBIES RETURN: IRON MAN, by Wellington and Mutti
* MARVEL ZOMBIES RETURN: WOLVERINE, by Maberry and Alexander
* MARVEL ZOMBIES RETURN: HULK, by Grahame-Smith and Elson
* MARVEL ZOMBIES RETURN: AVENGERS, by Van Lente and Alves
There's also a MARVEL SPOTLIGHT issue about this.

- THOR: DEFINING MOMENTS GIANT-SIZE #1, by JMS and Djurdjevic, concludes JMS's run on the title.

- WOLVERINE: OLD MAN LOGAN GIANT-SIZE #1, by Millar and McNiven : the conclusion of that heavily-delayed arc.

- WAR OF KINGS: WHO WILL RULE ? by Abnett, Lanning & Pelletier, is an epilogue to the cosmic crossover.

- DARK REIGN: MADE MEN, by Tieri and various artists : this reprints some online material, right ?
- M.O.D.O.K: REIGN DELAY, by Dunlavey : ditto, I think.

- HULK TEAM-UP has two stories of "current-day" meetings with some X-Men

- SHANG-CHI: MASTER OF KUNG-FU : a B&W anthology.

- DARING MYSTERY COMICS #1 70TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL, by Liss & Amstrong, features the Phantom Reporter.
- MARVEL MYSTERY HANDBOOK: 70TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

- ASTONISHING X-MEN SKETCHBOOK, introducing new regular penciller Jimenez. It's free !

NOTABLE ISSUES

- Shipping twice this month : INVINCIBLE IRON MAN (#17-18), AGENTS OF ATLAS (#10-11), INCREDIBLE HERCULES (#134-135), X-FACTOR (#48-49). And X-MEN FOREVER (#7-8), of course.
- AMAZING SPIDER-MAN ships 4 issues this month (#604-607). Also, #605 has a backup story which ups price and page-count.

- THUNDERBOLTS #136 guest-stars brainwashed Power Man & Iron Fist, by a guest creative team (Remender & Asrar).

- X-MEN LEGACY ANNUAL #1, by Carey & Acuña, is the start of the new direction of the title (centered on Rogue)
- PUNISHER ANNUAL #1, by the regular writer
- THOR ANNUAL #1, by the guest creative team of Milligan, Suayan & Mann

GONE MISSING THIS MONTH :
- CAPTAIN AMERICA (they have to wait for REBORN to finish...)
- ASTONISHING X-MEN (but they got a new penciller, so it's set to restart soon)
- THOR (but there's an annual and the big one-shot for the finale of JMS's run)
- X-MEN LEGACY (but there's an annual)
- DAREDEVIL (but there's the DARK REIGN: THE LIST one-shot)
- MARVEL ADVENTURES THE AVENGERS (uh oh...)

PRICE WATCH
Follow Marvel's price hikes in real time ! (for MU regular titles only)

- 48 pages for $4.99 : PUNISHER: FRANK CASTLE MAX #74
- 48 pages for $3.99 : AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #605, THUNDERBOLTS #136, RUNAWAYS #14
- 40 pages for $3.99 : INCREDIBLE HULK #602, VENGEANCE OF THE MOON KNIGHT #1

NOTABLE COLLECTIONS

- Marvel Masterworks : Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD v2 (Steranko !), and a remastered TPB of the Avengers v2
- Essentials : Sub-Mariner v1
- Pet Avengers Classic

- DAREDEVIL BY BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS & ALEX MALEEV OMNIBUS VOL. 2 HC includes the end of their run, WHAT IF KAREN PAGE HAD LIVED ?, and, er, some issues of ULTIMATE MARVEL TEAM-UP for some reason (it was originally solicited as having DAREDEVIL: NINJA instead, but it's been corrected since).

- X-MEN ORIGINS HC collects the six recent one-shots.

- HULK: PLANET SKAAR HC is actually a collection of the "Son of Hulk" series's second arc.

- ULTIMATUM: REQUIEM PREMIERE HC is a collection of those scattered one shot. And contrary to what they usually did with the annuals, they won't be included in the regular series' collections.

- SUPREME POWER: NIGHTHAWK PREMIERE HC, seriously ?

- X-MEN VS. FANTASTIC FOUR PREMIERE HC
- X-MEN VS. AVENGERS PREMIERE HC
(each including a reprint of the teams' first meetings back in the 60s)

- WOLVERINE: WEAPON X FILES TPB also includes the infamous WOLVERINE ENCYCLOPEDIA, even though its 3rd issue was never published.

- FANTASTIC FOUR: LOST ADVENTURES BY STAN LEE TPB. Wait, there's four of them ? LAST FF STORY, FF: LOST, FF #296 and FF #543.

- THOR BY DAN JURGENS & JOHN ROMITA JR. VOL. 1 TPB.

So, what caught up your eye this time ?

Okay, just to clarify, this ISN'T the Heroes Reborn She-Bucky - she came to the MU back in the "Heroes Reborn" event that involved Doom taking over the HR-Earth and bringing it to the MU Solar System as the new "Counter-Earth", and appeared in Thunderbolts afterward. The Onslaught Reborn version was an alternate version based on the HR She-Bucky, but not the same character.

Because I know this has caused confusion before :)

Seriously!! I like to think that my frequent complaining on other message boards helped make this happen.

Agreed, and according to Amazon (who have admittedly been wrong before), it'll be closely followed by Essential Golden Age Sub-Mariner.

Okay, this is probably not quite the right place for this because it doesn't exactly deal with comics shipping in September but it seemed better than starting a new topic in "Chat." Basically, what's up with Amazing Spider-Man Family, Amazing Spider-Man: Extra! and Astonishing Tales? The first two series had issues come out just last week but they have nothing listed for August and September, and the last Extra! appeared back in March and none have been solicited since then. So, have they been silently cancelled or are they on hiatus (like Immortal Iron Fist) or what?

Also, what's the status of Uncanny X-Men: First Class? Even though this site (among others) lists it as an 8-issue miniseries, there are indications that it might be ongoing. First, of the six miniseries issues which came out this week, Uncanny X-Men: First Class is the only one which does not have the words "Limited serieS" on the cover and the issue number presented in the "X of Y" format. Second, the Marvel Previews for July solicited "Uncanny X-Men: First Class #1 (of 8)" but the catalogs for August and September have dropped the "(of 8)" and just listed it like an ongoing series.

Does anyone know where reliable information about these series can be found?

Rich Johnston's said that ASM Family's being relaunched as Web of Spider-Man.

ASM Extra sells something like a third of ASM - one presumes they've just folded any planned stories into the main title.

I think they may have run out of web material to reprint in Astonishing Tales for now - if so, it'll probably come back, possibly under a different title, once they've built up enough "digital exclusive" material that doesn't fit elsewhere.

Don't know about UX:FC being upgraded to an ongoing or otherwise.

Thanks for the information, Somebody. I just wanted to know if I should keep those series on my active list or move them to my list of cancelled titles. Now, with your info, I guess I can move them.

Also, regarding UX:FC, it seems that while Marvel Previews is now treating it as an ongoing series, Diamond still considers it a limited series since their Customer Order Forms have consistently listed each issue as "#X (of 8)." Only time will tell.

Update: This discrepancy is resolved in the August 2009 Previews Order Form. Under the line for Uncanny X-Men First Class #4 (of 8) there is the following: "NOTE: This is still an 8 issue mini-series. This is not noted on the Previews solicitation."
