Skaar: Son of Hulk #2-6 + "Savage World of Sakaar" one-shot

Post by Kevin W. »

Here's the analysis for "Skaar: Son of Hulk #2-6", plus the "'Skaar: Son of Hulk' presents 'Savage World of Sakaar'" one-shot. What an absolute mess this was to analyze. This storyline features issues being split into two different tales, numerous flashbacks, and heavy revisions, (like the writer is changing things as he goes along). I highly recommend reviewing the analysis for Issue #1, as this analysis builds on top of that first issue.

Skaar: Son of Hulk #2
“Blood of the Dragon”
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Ron Garney

Appearances
: Skaar, Axeman Bone, Caiera the Oldstrong, (now reduced to a spirit). New Characters: “Old Sam”aka “Ol-Sahm”, (an elderly Shadow Priest), Princess Omaka, (the exiled daughter of the Red King, who has swords for arms), and Yenrag and Kram, (Two Imperial soldiers loyal to Omaka).

Synopsis: The story picks up right where we left off last issue, and lasts only a few minutes.

Skaar and Axeman Bone do battle. “Old Sam” warns Skaar not to battle Axeman Bone yet, telling Skaar about how he will help Skaar fulfill the prophecy to acquire his “true power”. Meanwhile, “Princess Omaka” and her followers arrive on the scene to help liberate the other slaves held hostage by Axeman Bone’s men. The Axeman unleashes monstrous dragons on Skaar, but Skaar slays all of them and wounds the Axeman, who orders a retreat. As they flee, Skaar and Omaka meet each other for the first time…

References:

Also, it should be noted that though we first learn his name in this issue, “Old Sam” is among the captured people Skaar rescues in the first issue. I don’t think I noted an entry for him last issue, but I’m adding it to the MCP listing below.

Skaar: Son of Hulk #2/2
“Shadow Tales Pt. 1”
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Butch Guise

Appearances:
Axeman Bone. New Characters: Hiro-Amin, (a Shadow Priest loyal to the Axeman), and Hiro-Kala, (a slave of the Axeman). In Flashback, we see: Axeman Bone.

Synopsis: Pgs. 1 and 2: At a nearby camp of soldiers loyal to Axeman Bone, a young boy slave named Hiro-Kala and a Shadow priest loyal to the Axeman, (named Hiro-Amin) get to talking about whether Skaar is a savior or not. While they talk, the soldiers at this camp spot the Axeman and Skaar battling atop the flying dragons, (as seen in the last segment, nothing new is shown).

The priest holds up a skull from a nearby stack of bones, and using his “shadow priest” powers, shows the boy slave what happened to this poor unfortunate soul, (they tap into the skull’s “memories”, I guess you could say, it’s a flashback I’ll go over below)…

After finishing the dead person’s horrific memories, Hiro-Amin tries to tell Hiro-Kala that things are no different with the Son of Hulk around. Just then, Axeman Bone arrives back in camp, his men tending to his wounds. The End.

References:

Just like “Old Sam”, as I mentioned above, the Shadow Priest “Hiro-Amin” in this segment was in the first issue, acting as a servant of Axeman Bone. So this is his second appearance as well.

Pg. 2 of the 2nd story: One slave tells another, “Stupid slave. Didn’t you hear? The Axeman killed the Son (of Hulk) this morning.” So yeah, this takes place the same day as “Skaar #1 pgs. 11-22”

Now to break down the flashback segment, which shows the memories of a dead teenage Imperial boy.

Pgs. 3 and 4: FB- The Hulk is smashing open the ground of a village, releasing the Native slaves that the Imperials kept hidden in mines below and smashing the village of the slaveholders. The Imperial who’s memories we’re accessing is a teenager who didn’t know the elders kept slaves down below. He sees the Hulk as a liberator.

This flashback must occur inbetween pgs. 21 and 22 of Incredible Hulk Vol. 3 #96, (pg. 21 ends with Hulk and the Warbound having just discovered the slaves. They turn and prepare to start smashing the village, and pg. 22 is the epilogue showing Headman Chaar sitting amidst the rubble of his village hours later).

5p1:FB- Sometime later, having fled the village and now wandering the desert, the teenage boy and his “Auntie” feel the ground rumble. Auntie says that the Red King’s “Oldstrong” (Caiera) and the Hulk are doing battle.

This must occur during Hulk vol. 3 #98, when Caiera and Hulk are doing battle.

5p2:FB- Sometime later, the teenage boy and his “Auntie” are fleeing the Spikes.

This must occur during Hulk vol. 3 #99, when the Spikes are ravaging the countryside.

5p3:FB- Sometime later, the teenage boy and his “Auntie” are taking cover with others behind a mountain as the Red King launches “Deathfire Bombs” against the Hulk.

The only place I can find for this to occur is in Hulk vol. 3 #99, towards the end of the issue, when the Red King drops a Deathfire Bomb on the village that Caiera and the Hulk are trying to evacuate from the Spikes. The boy and his “Auntie” must be huddling behind a mountain nearby.

5p4 – 7:FB- The boy and his “Auntie”, (along with other refugees) have been on the run for some time. The come to the top of a mountain to discover a fertile valley below. We learn that the Hulk has killed the Red King and now rules Crown City. They descend into the valley and think they will now have peace at last, when off in the distance, Crown City blows up. Earthquakes erupt, radiation flows across the land, and the fertile vines of the valley become plant monstrosities.

This must occur at the same time as Hulk vol. 3 #104 and #105, (the bomb goes off here in Crown City in Pg. 6, panel 5, (the last panel for that page). All of Pg. 7 is after the bomb has gone off, as the side effects ravage the land).

Pg. 8:FB- Narrative caption reads, “3 Moons Later”. The teenage boy is alone in the desert, (he must’ve got separated from the others in the carnage), dying due to lack of thirst, when he opens his eyes to see Axeman Bone standing over him. Axeman Bone kills him.

Skaar #3
“The Princess and the Beast”
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Ron Garney

Appearances:
Skaar, Axeman Bone, Princess Omaka, Old Sam, Yenrag, Kram, Hiro-Kala, Hiro-Amin, Caiera the Oldstrong. New Characters: Lt. Skee, (a soldier loyal to the Axeman Bone).

Synopsis: Pgs. 1-13: Continues where we left off at the end of last issue. Princess Omaka and Skaar start to fight each other, (she doesn’t see Skaar as a savior) when Axeman Bone launches a set of catapult attacks from back at his base camp. As the peasants around Skaar flee, Omaka and Skaar stand their ground, only to encounter a new threat: savage “Wildebots” enter the area. Skaar and Omaka unite to fight the Wildebots.

Pg. 14: Narrative caption: “Later”. It actually looks to be the next day, (due to the previous scenes have a nighttime haze to them, and this page shows broad daylight). The Priest Hiro-Amin and Axeman Bone’s men survey the battlefield where Skaar and Omaka were last night. It’s littered with the smashed bodies of Wildebots.

Skaar #3/2
“Shadow Tales Pt. 2”
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Butch Guise

Appearances:
Axeman Bone, Hiro-Kala. In flashback: Axeman Bone, Caiera the Oldstrong, the Red King.

Synopsis: Pg. 1 and 2: This occurs between pgs. 13 and 14 of the last story segment. It’s nighttime and inside Axeman Bone’s private tent, he is recovering from his wounds. Sensing weakness, a group of his men attack him. While loyal soldiers jump in and do battle on his behalf, the Axeman retreats to the woods behind his tent. There, he is confronted by the boy Hiro-Kala, who has a poisoned dagger he just stole from one of the traitors.

Axeman relates a story about how the world will not be better with him dead, (see flashback detailed below). Upon finishing his story, back in the present day, Axeman convinces the boy that he is the only hope for Sakaar, not Skaar or Omaka. The boy lowers his dagger and the Axeman returns to camp, (his soldiers have slain the last of the traitors).

References:

3p1 – 3p2:FB – Axeman relates this was “10 Years Ago”. We see the Axeman performing in the Gladiator arena for the Red King. He has just defeated the kings of 6 tribes that had refused to bow to the Red King. We see the Red King nodding in approval at Axeman, with Caiera as his personal bodyguard at his side.

3p3:FB- The Red King sees Axeman as a contender to the throne. To keep him out of the way, the Red King sends the Axeman off to do war with the barbarian nation of Fillia, (which is a nation of barbarians he now leads). We see the Axeman doing battle with the barbarians of Fillia.

4 – 5p4:FB – Meanwhile, the Red King is shown burning a city he considered rebellious to the ground. The royalty of this city are raising a son of his, whom he kills, (thus, eliminating another contender for the throne). A young Princess Omaka is caught in the destruction, and looses her arms.

5P5 – 6:FB- Omaka, (years later, a battle hardened adult) is shown having now raised her own army, to do battle with Axeman Bone. In this scene, she executes a soldier loyal to Axeman Bone.

Skaar: Son of Hulk: Savage World of Sakaar (one-shot)
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Carlo Pagulayan, Tim Truman, Timothy Green II, and Gabriel Hardman.

Appearances:
Skaar, Princess Omaka, Old Sam, Yenrag, Kram.

In flashback segment #1: Axeman Bone, King Angmo, Yenrag.

In flashback segment #2: Princess Omaka, Caiera the Oldstrong, the Red King, and Ronan Kaifi, (a rebel leader we last saw in the “Planet Hulk” storyline, he’s the father of Elloe Kaifi, member of the Warbound).

In flashback segment #3: Skaar, Old Sam, Emperor Angmo.

Synopsis:

Pg. 1 and 2: This is probably the next night after the end of the last issue.
The “heroes” are gathered around a campfire speculating on Skaar’s power, (as they watch him eat the remains of a Wildebot). Yenrag relates a tale about Axeman Bone and the first Emperor, (the Red King’s father):

Pg. 3: FB – We see the birth of Axeman, which kills the child’s mother. The village elder declares the Axeman is an “Imperial Prime”, (like Emperor Angmo, a rare powerhouse among the Imperials). The village elder hides the baby in a dungeon beneath the village, (scared of drawing the wrath of Angmo with a contender for the throne).

Pg. 4-6: FB – Yenrag’s narration notes this as “10 years later”. Word has leaked that this village has an Imperial Prime in it, and the Emperor firebombs the city, (instead of killing the Axemen, the damage sets the Axeman free from his dungeon). He kills the soldiers attacking the village, then kills the villagers for keeping him locked away in a dungeon. Emperor Angmo should get a BTS listing here for ordering the firebombing of the village.

Pg. 7-9: FB – Yenrag’s narration notes “10 years later” again. Yenrag, (a servant of the 1st Emperor Angmo) is with Emperor Angmo on a hunting trip, when they are attacked by the Axeman Bone. The Axeman and the Emperor duel, and the Axeman wins, killing Angmo, (which clears the way for his son, the Red King, Angmo II, to take the throne).

Pg. 10: Back in the present day, Omaka and some of the others start talking about the history of the Shadow People and Caiera Oldstrong.

Pg. 11: FB- “10,000 years ago”. The Shadow People arrive on Planet Sakaar, (which is already a dying planet). The use their “Old Power” to save the planet, stabilizing it for centuries.

Pg. 12: FB- This page shows stone statues dedicated to the Elder Shadow People from that ancient time, (now overgrown with moss). The last panel switches to a shot of Caiera, using her “Old Power” to lift some rocks. There’s no reference to when this occurs, it’s just a generic shot of Caiera.

Pg. 13-17: FB-Omaka narrates this occurs, “7 Years ago”. Princess Omaka is secretly meeting with some other rebel leaders, (including Ronan Kaifi), plotting to overthrow the Red King. Ticked off at their perceived cowardice, Omaka attempts an attack on the Red King alone. Caiera, (the Red King’s bodyguard at this point in life) fights Omaka and easily beats her, in the process toppling buildings, killing Imperial citizen’s living in the city, (which the Red King ordered as a means to punish those who harbor rebels).

Pg. 18: Back to the present day, Old Sam begins to tell his story of how he first met Skaar.

Pg. 19: FB- A flashback to the first “Spike War”. We see the original Emperor leading forces against the alien Spikes.

Pg. 20: FB- This is a flashback to the Hulk making friends with the Spikes, (allowing the spikes to feed off of his blood for a time). This was shown in the “Planet Hulk” storyline, (no new material).

Pg. 21-26: FB-The story cuts to a scene just a few months ago. A “child” Skaar is running wild with his “hybrid” animal friends in the swamps, when he is captured by a group of Shadow People who consider him a curse. They take him to a cave and perform ritual scars on him, (which is where the marks on Skaar’s arms come from). From there, they attempt to ritually sacrifice him, only for Skaar to fight back and defeat them. As he marches back into the swamps, he is spotted by Old Sam…

Pg. 27-35: Back in the present day, the stories conclude as the radioactive vines of the “Twisted Wood” come to life, attacking the refuges at Skaar’s camp. Skaar let’s the vines suck on his blood, (like what the Hulk did with the Spikes) and the vines turn benevolent again. The refuges exit the forest safely; only for the woods to turn violent again as Skaar exits. This time, Skaar turns around and smashes the forest to a pulp.

The refuges decide to carry onward to “Prophet Rock”, to help Skaar find his full power…

References:

Pg. 13: Omaka tells the other rebel leaders that the Red King “sent his Axeman to fight the Barbarians, (of Fillia)”. Just making note of where things are at during this point in the Axeman’s life “7 years ago”.

Pg. 16: Caiera narrates that Omaka is “25 years too late” in her offer to free Caiera from the Red King’s control. Caiera has been serving the Red King of her own free will, (her obedience disk removed) for the past 25 years, (back when a treaty was signed between the Shadow People and the Red King).

Skaar: Son of Hulk #4
“The Prophet’s Walk”
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Ron Garney

Appearances:
Skaar, Old Sam, Princess Omaka

Synopsis: Pgs. 1-10: It is now “1 week” since the battle against Axeman Bone in Issues #1 and 2. The refuges have set up camp at the edge of the Great Desert. A pack of “Devil Corker” beasts attack, and Skaar viciously slays the beasts. Many of the refuges express doubt that this monster Skaar could be their savior. Just then a sandstorm hits.

Pgs. 11-14: Narrative caption reads, “Prophet Rock. 2 Days Later”. The refugees arrive at Prophet Rock. Old Sam rushes into a nearby cave, where he was keeping an ancient spaceship, only for him to find that the place has been discovered by Wildebots, (who have scavenged metal and circuitry off the ship). The priest Hiro-Amin and a few of Axeman Bone’s warriors show up, and Hiro-Amin reveals he has a massive amount of the “Old Power”, and begins pummeling Skaar!

References: Pg. 1: One of the refugees, (quoting common folklore) says, “A thousand years ago, the Prophet entered the desert”. I’m just making a note here that any potential flashbacks in the future involving the “Prophet” occur “1,000 years ago”.

Pg. 9: Princess Omaka says, “A week ago, you cheered the Son of Hulk when he killed the Fillian dogs who enslaved you”. So it’s been “a week” since the battle with Axeman Bone from Issues #1 and 2.

Moving on, there’s only one clear panel showing one of the soldiers loyal to Princess Omaka, and since I can’t see whether it’s Yenrag or Kram, (the two are pretty much identical in appearance) then I’m not prepared to give an appearance listing to either of them.

Finally, I can see no clear sign of Caiera’s narration in this issue. There’s a narrative caption near the start of the story, (while a member of the refugees sings praise about Skaar), but I can’t tell if that’s a narrative box of the person singing, or whether it’s Caiera narrating, so I’m not giving a listing for Caiera this issue.

Skaar: Son of Hulk 4/2
“Shadow Tales” Pt. 3
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Butch Guise

Appearances:
Axeman Bone, Lt. Skee, Hiro-Kala, Hiro-Amin. In flashback: Hiro-Kala, Hiro-Amin.

Synopsis: Pg. 1: Narrative caption reads, “The Camp of Axeman Bone. Three days earlier”. So this story is set 3 days before the end of the last story segment.

Axeman Bone holds conference with Lt. Skee and the priest Hiro-Amin, and decides to send Hiro-Amin out to hunt for the Hulk. Overhearing their conversation, Hiro-Kala escapes from the camp, (to go and meet this Skaar for himself).

Pg. 2-8: Narrative caption reads, “The Next Dawn. The Wastelands.” So this is the next day. In the middle of the desert, the boy has collapsed. He is found by some refugees on the run from Axeman Bone, who accuse him of being a servant of the Axeman, (though one female refugee sees that the boy is just an escaped slave). As they are about to beat up the boy, a Devil Corker attacks, killing everyone but the boy and the woman. The boy somehow manages to slay it. The sandstorm hits, (the same sandstorm as from the last story segment) and the boy and female take shelter beneath the slain devil corker.

After the storm passes, the boy leaves the woman behind, continuing his journey through the desert.

References: There are a few flashbacks to Hiro-Amin and Hiro-Kala’s shared history:

Pg. 2, panel 3-5:FB- Hiro-Amin narrates that this flashback occurs, “7 days after Crown City burned and fell”. So this is “7 days” after the explosion shown in H3 #104 and 105.

Hiro-Kala is unconscious on a life boat in the midst of the ocean, (having been blown adrift by the explosion of Crown City which rocked the planet), when he is picked up by a warship of the invading Fillians, led by the rogue Shadow priest Hiro-Amin.

Pgs. 6p3-7p2: FB-Hiro-Amin pretends to take sympathy on the boy Hiro-Kala, asking him where the other refugees are. The boy tells him where they can be located at, only to discover the Fillian barbarians anchor their ship and go ashore to kill and enslave the refugees. Hiro-Amin narrates that he sensed when the “Son of Hulk” was born, and sensed that he would bring doom to the planet, (so he is leading a group on behalf of Axeman Bone, to kill all refugees who might have the baby among them).

Skaar #5
“Fall of the Prophet”
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Ron Garney

Appearances:
Skaar, Hiro-Amin, Princess Omaka, Old Sam, Caiera the Oldstrong, Kram, Yenrag. In flashback: Skaar

Synopsis: Picks up right where we left off last issue. The battle between Skaar and Hiro-Amin continues, shattering Prophet Rock in the process. Skaar eventually gets the upper hand and mortally wounds Hiro-Amin. He declares he’s ready to obtain the Old Power.

References: Skaar actually interacts with the narrative voice of his mother Caiera in this issue, (they talk to each other, and she helps him defeat Hiro-Amin). Thus, she’s more than just a narrative tool, she deserves actual appearance listings for these issues.

Pg. 9p2: There’s a quick flashback to Skaar living in the swamps as a boy, being attacked by a Wildebot. Since we never saw this scene before now, it’s all new material. I would place it between the SKAAR #1, Pgs 10 and 11.

Pg. 10p2: This panel has a quick flashback to Skaar being pierced in the back by an arrow back during his battle with Axeman Bone’s men in Issue #1, (he obviously must’ve shrugged off the arrow). I would place this between pgs. 18 and 19 of Issue #1, (pg. 18 shows Skaar launching his surprise attack on the barbarians. Pg. 19 shows the barbarians fighting back against Skaar, and being slaughtered by him. That arrow must’ve struck as they launched their attacks). I see no better place to stick this…

Skaar #5/2
“Shadow Tales Pt. 4”
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Butch Guice

Appearances:
Hiro-Amin, Hiro-Kala, Axeman Bone. In Flashback: New character: Koaam.

Synopsis: Narrative Caption reads, “12 hours later”. It appears to be growing dark outside, so it’s the same day. Skaar and the refugees have long since left the ruins of Prophet Rock, but the mortally wounded Hiro-Kala is found by the slave boy Hiro-Amin. The boy Hiro-Amin wants the “Old Power” for himself, (so that he can fight Skaar and end this cycle of violence on this world. He’s apparently come to believe the Axeman is the one who can unite the world). Axeman Bone arrives in time to hear Hiro-Amin narrate a tale about how he received the Old Power, (detailed below), and says that Hiro-Kala needs to kill him to have the Old Power transfer to him.

With the Axeman Bone’s help, the boy kills Hiro-Amin, but doesn’t feel the Old Power in him. However, Axeman is convinced enough of Hiro-Kala’s loyalty that he released him from his slave status and makes the boy a member of his army.

References:

Pg. 3 – pg. 4:FB- As Hiro-Amin lays dying, he relates a tale of Koaam.

3p1:FB- Koaam was an insignificant student at the Shadow People’s temple, spending his time sweeping the floors of the temple.

3p2:FB- We see he was left behind to care for the temple while the elders leave to go to Crown City for the inauguration of Hulk as the new Green King.

3p3:FB- Crown City explodes, (as shown in H3 #104 and 105). Nothing new shown here.

3p4-3p6:FB- Back at the temple, mere moments later, Koaam is suddenly infused with the “Old Power”, (the elders have transferred it to him). He accidently blows up part of the temple.

4p1-4p3:FB- Koaam leaves the temple behind and goes on a training retreat.

4p4-4p6:FB- He eventually runs into refugees on the run from Axeman Bone, and defends the refugees. They proclaim him their new savior.

Pg. 5: FB- This is a retread of the events shown in Issue #1, (no new material here). Koaam is killed by the Axeman Bone and the refugees are rounded up, (only for Skaar to later on free them).

Note: This flashback sequence involving Koaam is a revision to Issue #1: we were led to believe the Shadow Boy that the Axeman attacked in Issue #1 was Skaar, (in a “non-Gamma Muscle” form, like Banner). Here we learn that wasn’t Skaar after all, (it’s only later, during “Planet Skaar Prologue” that Skaar has a different “transformed” look). The figure we saw in Issue #1 was this new character “Koaam”, whom the Axeman did indeed kill.

Skaar #6
“Heroes and Monsters”
Written by Greg Pak
Art by Ron Garney and Butch Guise

Appearances:
Skaar, Princess Omaka, Old Sam, Kram, Yenrag, The Red King, Axeman Bone, Hiro-Kala, and the Silver Surfer. In flashback, we see: Old Sam, Emperor Angmo, The Red King.

Synopsis: This is probably the next day after the end of last issue. Skaar leads the refugees through the desert, (now much of it reduced to a lava field, thanks to the Hiro-Amin’s unleashing the Old Power last issue). As they travel, Old Sam reveals in flashback how he created the legend of the Sakaarson, (details below). They are soon attacked again by Axeman Bone and his army.

The refugees and Skaar seek shelter in the nearby fortress city of Okini, only to be greeted at the front door by the Red King, (who is now cyborg robot, with only his original head intact). He states that after the Hulk defeated him, Wildebots came along and finished the job, killing him, yet also integrating his battle armor, transforming him into a cyborg. He proclaims he’s more of a compliant robot now, no longer showing any of the insane anger of his former life. He says other Wildebots have told him of what Skaar seeks, and they have used their technology to construct a device that’ll give Skaar the full “Old Power”.

Princess Omaka distrusts the Red King and flees to join Axeman Bone’s side. Only one of her soldiers, (Kram) joins her, the others stay behind. Skaar turns and touches the device, and starts to feel the Old Power surge within him..

Meanwhile, somewhere else in the Wastelands, the Silver Surfer arrives amidst another group of refugees, and asks how he can help them, (this is the 2nd time the Surfer visited this world, the last time was before the Annihilation Wave, back in H3 95. This time, the Surfer’s now back in the role of Herald for Galactus).

References: These flashbacks occur well before Fantastic Four #1, but I’m going to explain in full the events of these flashbacks:

5p1-5p2:FB- Old Sam narrates “Two hundred years ago” about how the majority of Shadow people “descended into backward mysticism”, while his own tribe of Shadow people held onto preserving the technology of their race. We see Old Sam’s tribe living in a “Vanishing Tower”, where they preserve their cultures technology.

5p3:FB- Old Sam and his tribe see the Spikes arriving on their world, and attacking everyone else, (I guess their tower is cloaked from the Spikes). Old Sam wants to help the other people in the world, but his tribe refuse. The first “Spike War” happened 40 to 50 years ago, (or maybe longer).

5p4-6:FB-Old Sam disobeys his elders and travels to a nearby Shadow temple, housed inside of which is an old Shadow people spaceship. Old Sam messes with some aspects of the old engine to the spaceship, and blasts a wormhole into opening above the planet, in the hopes that heroic figures would come through and save their world, (through the memory banks of his tribe, he knows of heroic figures that roam the universe). This is, of course, the same wormhole that would eventually bring the Hulk to their world.

Page 7:FB-Old Sam builds statues in front of the temple, telling the superstitious people that they must be on the lookout for the “Sakaarson” to arrive, and that he may come in many forms, (one of the statues looks like a Nova Centurion, the other like an Asgardian(?), and the last one looks like the Silver Surfer. This explains back in H3 #94 and 95, why everyone thought the Silver Surfer looked like the legendary Sakaarson.

Random comment: The Surfer back then was a Herald of Galactus, why would Old Sam want the Surfer to come aid their world, (at least at this point in history)?

8p1:FB- The “Death’s Head” warriors were the first spaceship to come through the wormhole. This panel shows the Death’s Head robots stepping out of their downed spaceship.

8p2:FB- This panel shows the first Emperor Angmo using the Death’s Head guards to help battle the Spikes in the first Spike War.

8p3:FB- This panel shows year later how Emperor Angmo’s son, the Red King, uses the Death’s Head guards to wipe out dissenting rebels.

8p4:FB- This panel shows Old Sam walking amidst the ruins of the Shadow temple where he had created the legend of the Sakaarson, (the place was destroyed by the Red King).

Re: Skaar: Son of Hulk #2-6 + "Savage World of Sakaar" one-shot

Notes:
I analysed Hulk Family: Green Genes #1/1, #1/2 and #1/4 before. The Skaar story was the second story from the one-shot, not the first.

The Surfer's also appearing in Beta Ray Bill: Godhunter right now. Given the events of SKR 7-10 and 12/2, that may well also take place before this (I believe Galactus also appeared in Millar's F4, but have no idea how that fits in).

All of Caiera's appearances in these issues of Skaar (plus #1 after the reprise of H3 105) should be -VO. She doesn't reappear as a physical being until #8.

Good catch. But for one-shots like that, should the MCP listings look like "HF:GG 1/2" or "HF:GG/2"?

Haven't had a chance to pick up "Godhunter", so I've got no idea how that fits in. And wasn't that a dead husk, (shell) of Galactus in Millar's FF, (like a snake's shed skin)? Does Galactus shed his skin??

I know you mentioned that in the analysis thread for Issue #1, but have we ever used "-VO" before? It's true that "BTS" isn't quite appropriate for her appearances, but I'm just wondering if there's been precedent for using "-VO" before now...

Also, I want your opinion: Do you agree that since it isn't clear she's narrating in Issue #4 and Issue #6, she shouldn't get a listing in the MCP for those issues? (even though we know her "spirit" is always lurking around Skaar)...

Yes, we're using it. It's in the Key.

Depends entirely on whether they stick a redundant "No. 1" in or not, I suppose. I'd prefer they didn't, for myself - but since both the cover and indicia of the Hulk Family issue include the #1, I included it.

No idea, I've not been following it - hence the "I believe".

If anyone HAS been putting themselves through it and so knows the actual details, don't hesitate to let us know :)

Well, Russ answered that one :). Same way we're meant to page-range -FBs if there's more than one in a story, AIUI.

And, having looked back at #1, I'd put the Caiera chronology around that issue as:

CAIERA THE OLDSTRONG
[...]
H3 105
SKR 1 (3:6-4:5)-OP [the scenes where she disintegrated are repeats from up to H3 105, but she then forms the egg around Skaar, which is new and why I give her an -OP. The page range is for the "new material only" stuff, where we see the egg being formed]
WWH 5 [as ghostly figure, representing her "whispering in Skaar's ear" role]
SKR 1 (5-7)-VO [page 7 is the end of the scene. The next scene is "one month later", and the scene following that is "one year later", and she's not heard from again until the next issue. If you'd rather do 5-end of issue, that's (5-22)]
SKR 2-VO
[...]

Absolutely - for the Skaar series, that caption style/narrative voice represents her, so since there's at least SOME of that narration in those issues (however minimal) that means it's her VO until proven otherwise for as long as she "lives".

Thanks, Kevin, for this analysis. I'll work on incorporating it into my revised Calendar notes this weekend and let you know if I have any questions. :)

I've updated some of the MCP listings to reflect Somebody's excellent observations. I'll go home tonight and check on adding page-ranges to the listings for some of the other flashbacks, (I've been hesitant to do page-ranges on flashbacks until now). It used to be that if the MCP listing mentions there's a flashback, we assumed the reader should be able to self-discover it without us pointing out page ranges...but when books like this keep referencing the same events over and over, (the explosion of Crown City, for instance) I can see the benefit of page/panel ranges...

One more thing for now, having flicked back through the comics - Caiera should be -OP rather than -VO in #5, yes? [That is, since she's actively protecting Skaar, she's "doing stuff" - albeit without a physical body, so still off-panel - thus upgrading her from the -VO.]

I don't know if her giving advice to Skaar counts as "actively protecting" him. She doesn't do anything in a physical form until Issue #8, (it's also in that issue that Skaar notes that he always hears her voice). If we go the "-OP" route, since she's always giving advice, (not just on how to finish off Hiro-Amin, as in Issue #5, but also "save the innocents, Skaar, don't just kill the bad guys" - the motherly equivalent to "eat your vegetables, young man!!") it could be noted that all appearances should be "-OP", not "-VO"...

Not just advice. Here's the dialogue from the relevant section of SKR 5:
Skaar, Son of Hulk #5 wrote:(7:3)
SKAAR: "Always talking... --just talk talk talk"
CAIERA: "Today I'll do more than that. The Old Power draws its strength from the planet itself."

(8)
CAIERA (cont): "When the priest attacks... keep your hands on the ground. And I will protect you."
SKAAR: "I don't need your help. I don't need anyone's--" [Hiro-Amin proceeds to wreck him]

(9&10)
CAIERA: "Of course. You didn't need me when...
  • . But hear me my son..."

    (11)
CAIERA (cont): "...you need me today."

[SKAAR is now lying with his hands on the ground]

HIRO-AMIN: "Wait... ah. Ha Ha. Your mother, eh? Caiera the Oldstrong. Even in death, protecting her child with her Old Power. So that's what I've smelled on you all this time. Your mother's touch."

I updated several more flashbacks in the MCP listings above.

I'm still not sure how she uses her powers to "help" him though. Following the text you provided above, Hiro-Amin just stands over him gloating, and begins to allow himself to loose control of the "Old Power". From there, Skaar takes the chains from an ancient "Shadow People" ship, and uses them to finish off Hiro-Amin.

Does Skaar's placing hands on the ground prevent Hiro-Amin from striking him? Hiro-Amin doesn't act like he's thwarted by this...(though the scene is a bit unclear).

I suppose just the fact that Hiro-Amin senses her presence on Skaar is a point in your favor...I could go either way with the "-VO" versus "-OP".
