Amazing Spider-Man Family #5

Story #1: Who is Gwen Reilly? [MC-2]
Script, Plot and Pencils: Tom DeFalco & Ron Frenz
Finished Art: Sal Buscema

Characters Appearing:
Arana, Black Tarantula, Chesbro, Philippe DeJunae, Simone DeSantos, Courtney Duran, Fury (BTS), Davida Kirby, Moose Mansfield, Man Mountain Marko, Heather Noble, Benjamin Parker, Gwen Reilly, Rene, Silverback/Silvio Barraca, Mr. Slattery, Spider-Girl, Spider-Girl II, Spider-Man, Gene Thompson, Mary Jane Watson-Parker, Wes Westin, Jimmy Yama

Synopsis:
1-4p2: May and the symbiote-clone search the abandoned headquarters of the Order of the Goblin. It is booby-trapped, and they escape just before a bomb blows it up.

4p3-4p6: Rene informs Philippe DeJunae by phone that the headquarters has been destroyed and that Philippe's daughter Elan is recovering in a sanitarium.

5-6: May and the hybrid-clone work together to stop a truck hijacking.

7: The Black Tarantula, with Arana, learns that someone new is challenging his control over the New York underworld.

8: Silverback tells Man Mountain Marko that he is disappointed to see the New York bosses following the Black Tarantula. He tells Marko that he intends to take over New York crime.

9-10: At the Parker household, everyone discusses the situation with the new May. The clone-symbiote May plans to adopt a new name and appearance in order to be able to attend school at Midtown.

11-14p3: May returns to school after being gone for a few days. Davida sets May up on a date with Wes. The other May shows up at school, calling herself April Parker, surprising May and Mary Jane.

14p4-14p6: Rene learns that Elan has regained consciousness and escaped from the sanitarium.

15-18: Peter and MJ are discussing what to do about April when the doorbell rings. It's a girl calling herself Gwen Reilly, who claims to be the daughter of Ben, Peter's clone. Peter and May are suspicious of her and May slips a Spider-tracer into her coat. After Gwen leaves, Peter plans to run the fingerprints she left on a mug.

19-22: May and April swing off to track Gwen. They hear gunshots. May goes to break up a gang shoot out while April continues tracking Gwen. May hears a scream and arrives to find April standing over Gwen Reilly's apparently dead body.

Flashbacks:
(2:1) Norman Osborn with baby May and clone.

(2:2) Peter and MJ holding baby May.

(2:3) May and Davida playing basketball for Midtown High.

(2:4) May battling the Dragon King; May battling Crazy Eight.

(2:5) The May clone in a stasis chamber.

Continuity Notes:
This story happens relatively soon after the end of the previous story arc. MJ is still wearing a cast from when her arm was broken. May has been out of school for "the last few days".

The flashbacks are all fairly generic scenes illustrating May's life. They don't really provide any new information, and I don't think they need to be placed in character chronologies.

------------------------------

Story #2: Relevant Experience
Writer: Marc Sumerak
Artist: Todd Nauck

Characters Appearing:
Carlie Cooper, Harry Osborn, Spider-Man

Synopsis:
1-3: Peter is at the Coffee Bean, looking for a job in the classifieds. Carlie gets Peter an interview for a position as a photographer on her forensics team. The police chief isn't impressed by his Spider-Man photo portfolio, but hires him on Carlie's recommendation.

4-8: Peter and Carlie visit a number of crime scenes. Peter keeps connecting crime scene evidence to super-criminals, annoying Carlie. She eventually gets fed up with him at a crime site and snaps at him.

9-10: Peter and Carlie both apologize for the way they acted. Carlie reveals that forensic evidence connected the crime scene to mobsters rather than super criminals, and tells Peter that the job didn't work out.

Continuity Notes:
Brand New Day: Harry is running the Coffee Bean, Peter is unemployed. Peter makes references to both Freak and Menace, which places this story sometime after his first encounter with Freak, and presumably before Menace's capture.

Pages 4-8 happen "soon" after 1-3. Pages 9-10 happen "That night". It seems like the story is intended to take place in a single day.

------------------------------

Story #3: Treasure Hunted
Writer: Tony Lee
Pencils: Mark Robinson
Inks: Walden Wong

Characters Appearing:
Mad Hacker, Screwball, Spider-Man

Synopsis:
1-10: Screwball's live webcast is hijacked by the "Mad Hacker" who reveals that a small child is being suspended from a building and will be dropped unless she can get there in time. She encounters Spider-Man on the way. He initially tries to stop her, but then helps her once he learns what's happening. Spider-Man saves the boy, but when Screwball disappears leaving a note behind, he realizes the whole thing was a set up.

Continuity Notes:
Not much to go on here.

------------------------------

Amazing Spider-Man Family #6

Story #1: Exit Interview
Writer: Brian Reed
Pencils: Tim Levins
Inks: Victor Olazaba & Walden Wong

Characters Appearing:
Jackpot I/Sarah Ehret, Jackpot II/Alana Jobson, Councilwoman Parfey, Spider-Man
Afterlife Bartender

Synopsis:
1: Jackpot dies in Spider-Man's arms

FB(2-3): Young Alana watches as her father is robbed at gunpoint. Spider-Man swings in to save the day.

FB(4-6): Alana obsessed over Spider-Man. She graduated from college and became a social worker and eventually an alcoholic.

FB(7-14): Alana meets Sara Ehret and starts to come out of her slump. Alana is romantically attracted to Sara, but doesn't tell her. Alana sees the hero Jackpot in the street and recognizes her as Sara. When she confronts Sara about it, Sara reveals that she doesn't want to be a hero. Alana lies and says that she has powers but never registered, so Sara agrees to sell her the Jackpot identity. Alana buys MGH to give her powers and starts her hero career.

15-20: Jackpot talks to a bartender in a bar representing the afterlife. A TV in the bar shows Sara Ehret picking up the Jackpot costume. Alana takes off her Jackpot wig and mask and walks through the door to the next phase of the afterlife as Alana Jobson.

Continuity Notes:
In the flashback on pages 2-3, Alana is twelve years old. She remarks that Spider-Man doesn't look much older than she is. His costume has the underarm webs.

There are four flashback panels that may depict previously shown information:
(8:4) - Spider-Man:"Jackpot, Huh?", Jackpot:"Yep! And that makes this your lucky day!"
(9:1) - Shortly following this, Spider-Man and Jackpot talk to police officer
(14:3) - Jackpot battles a super skrull
(14:4) - Jackpot kneels near the dead body of councilwoman Parfrey as Spidey looks on

The afterlife bartender tells Jackpot that he looks different to different people.

Note: according to this story, Spider-Man's initial meeting(s?) with Jackpot was with the original Sara Ehret Jackpot. Alana took over at some later point.

13-16: Spider-Girl intervenes in a gang war. Her spider-sense alerts her to something and she swings off. She is grabbed by Tombstone who beats her up.

Continuity Notes:
Pages 1-5 take place in one night, continue directly from the previous issue.
Pages 6-16 take place the next day.

Rene drops off an unknown person at Midtown high. There is no indication who it is, but the dialogue strongly suggests that it is not Fury.

------------------------------

Edna Blackquill, Spider-Ma'am, Spider-Man

Continuity Notes:
This is after May's first run in with Edna Blackquill.

Inks: Sal Buscema

Characters Appearing:
Spider-Man

Synopsis:
1-10: Peter Parker is in an elevator on his way to a job interview. The elevator gets stuck between floors with Peter and two young boys aboard. The boys recognize Peter as Spider-Man's photographer, and he ends up comforting them with fictional stories about Spider-Man. After they get out of the elevator, Peter meets the mother of one of the boys, who is headed for an interview for the same position. Peter leaves rather than going to the interview.

Continuity Notes:
Presumably happens during BND in the period when Peter was out of work.

Story #3: Walking the Talk
Writer: Joe Casey
Pencils: Chad Hardin
Inks: Mark Irwin

Characters Appearing:
J. Jonah Jameson (& FB), Marla Jameson (FB only), Shocker, Spider-Man

Synopsis:
1-11: Jonah is walking down the street when the mayor's passing motorcade is attacked by the Shocker. Spider-Man swings in and battles the Shocker, defeating him. Afterward, Jonah bumps into Peter Parker, who nags him about his heart problem.

Flashback:
(1:4) In bed, Marla warns Jonah that he can't start smoking again because of his heart.

Continuity Notes:
An editorial note places this story sometime prior to ASM 590.
I'm not sure where this is supposed to fit. There are multiple references to Jonah's heart, which would place this after his heart attack, but it is also strongly implied that he is still the publisher of the Bugle.

Story #4: Why Not have Spider-Man Lose Control of his Spider-Sense? [Alternate Universe]
Writer: Tom Peyer
Art: Stephanie Buscema

Characters Appearing:
Ant-Man, Assistant Watcher, J. Jonah Jameson, May Parker, Mister Fantastic, Spider-Man, Thing

Synopsis:
1-10: The "Assistant Watcher" narrates an alternate universe tale in which Spider-Man's Spider-Sense is out of control, causing him all sorts of problems. He eventually learns that it was Ant-Man's helmet that was triggering his Spider-Sense, but Ant-Man refuses to stop using it. Spider-Man resolves to ignore his Spider-Sense, and the story ends as he is about to get crushed by a giant Bugle.

Continuity Notes:
Explicitly described as an alternate reality.

Some follow-up questions.

First, a few of the FBs in ASMF 7. Is any of this new material? I suspect 8:3 is but perhaps not the others.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #7 – FB (17:1-17:3)
Peter is bit by the spider. Spider-Man lets the robber get away. May holds a dying (or dead) Ben.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #7 – FB (18:3)
One day during the first year after AAF 15. May lies in bed with Ben's robe beside her.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #7 – FB (11:3)
Spider-Man holds a dead Gwen Stacy.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #7 – FB (8:5)
One day. Black Cat is hugging Spider-Man. BC:"Please don't be mad at me!" SM:"Cat...!" BC:"I never stole from anyone who couldn't afford it. C'mon... Roll up that mask and give me a kiss."

Now parts of ASMF 8:

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #8 (5:2)
Civil War -- any specific scene from Civil War? Anything new?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #8 (5:3)
Skrull invasion -- any specific scene from the invasion? Anything new?

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #8 (5:4-6:2)
Sharon is pregnant. Osborn unveils his new Avengers. -- is this all the same day? Are Osborn and the Dark Avengers on TV? Same scene as shown in DARK AVENGERS #1, NEW AVENGERS #49, SECRET WARRIORS #10, etc.?

It's a battle between the heroes in the city. In the center of the panel are Captain America and Iron Man, with Iron Man firing his repulsors into Cap's shield. Also visible are Spider-Man, Hercules, Venom, the Vision, and a few others that I can't immediately identify.
Paul Bourcier wrote:AMAZING SPIDER-MAN FAMILY #8 (5:3)

Some super-skrulls terrorize the populace in the city.

(5:4) The protagonist is with his girlfriend in a doctor's office where she is getting an ultrasound.
(6:1) The protagonist and his pregnant girlfriend are standing in a crowd of people. The girlfriend looks considerably more pregnant -- probably several months after the previous panel.
(6:2) The crowd is looking at a large jumbotron screen. The caption on the screen says "Osborn Introduces the Avengers". Iron Patriot, Wolverine, Hawkeye, and Spider-Man are visible on the screen.
