X-MEN FANS: What's missing from the recent Index?

Post by JephYork »

Looking specifically at the X-Men section of the recent Official Index run -- what issues were left out of the chronologies by accident? Either flashbacks, or full issues?

Bonus points if you point out flashbacks in later issues that should have been inserted into the early issues' chronologies, but weren't. (Yes, even goofy little stuff like XU2 #9/2-FB and its three pool parties/snowball fights from various points in the X-Men's lives.)

I'd like to start a list here. I'm already aware of:

X-Men Origins: Jean Grey
Nightcrawler vol. 2 miniseries
most X-Men Unlimited issues from #30-45 or so

But I'm sure there's a ton more. Hit me, X-fans! What did we skip?

Emma Frost 1-18 (The X-Men appear v1 39ish in one issue)
X-Men Origins: (Iceman, Cyclops, Beast, Emma Frost, Sabretooth, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, Gambit)
Star Trek/X-Men (universe to universe)
Star Trek: The Next Generation/X-Men (universe to universe)
Devil's Reign Cross-Over from Top Cow (universe to universe)
Wolverine 102.5 (Wizard 1/2 type thing, during Onslaught)
First Class Series (at least one was referenced in X-Men vs. Agents of Atlas and the X-Men appeared in those costumes in a f/b in New Warriors v3)
Captain Universe/X-Men: Sleeping Giants (this was referenced in Handbook)
X-Women (European X-Men issue, this just came out though)
Numerous giveaways (Not sure how Marvel treats those)

This is just off the top of my head, I'll look through the boxes later and see.

But some of the Origins books might not be canon- the Cyclops one, for example, has Scott being 22 at the time of UX 7, establishes that Xavier first gave Scott the ruby quartz glasses (other stories made it clear that Scott had them for weeks before he met Xavier) and has an account of how Scott and Xavier first met that is impossible to reconcile with every previous depiction of how Scott and Xavier met.

Iceman Origins also has problems of completely retelling his origin between going on his date through his battle with Cyclops up to being enrolled in Xavier's.

Is the X-Men/Wild C.A.T.S. Silver Age temporary universe fusion included? It most likely takes place between UX 63 & 64.

On the X-Men/Wildcats note. I know that the Heroes Reborn no.13's are included because they have to be, but does the story explain how the universes were merged or are all the Wildstorm/Marvel Cross-overs dependant on the events depicted in the X-Men/Wildcats story. If so, the fact that the Heroes Reborn are included whould give grounds to include them all (Deathblow/Wolverine, Gen 13/Generation X, Spider-Man/Backlash, Gen 13/Fantastic Four, X-Men/Wildcats, Gen 13/Spider-Man, not sure if there are any others.)

The issue 13s do have an in-issue explanation for those particular issues.

I don't have the comics in front of me at the moment, but from memory the two worlds, Wildstorm & the franklin-verse, merged and created a shared world with a merged history where some members of Storm watch were on the Fantastic Four, some members of the Avengers were in WildCATS, etc etc. Then at the end of the four issue arc, the worlds un-merged and their respective histories went back to normal.

However, that doesn't apply to the OTHER crossover books from Wildstorm. They were treated as if the Wildstorm characters and the Marvel characters always existed in the same universe. So yeah, one doesn't give the other a pass.

Also, as long as I'm here, there was the Electro issue of Web of Spider-Man where Magneto and the Brotherhood appeared. #2?

Hey, Jeph. Are you working the flashbacks from the second stories of the recent
World War Hulks: Spider-Man vs. Thor #1-2 into character chronologies?

These flashbacks seem to occur very early in the X-Men's history. Young Bobby
Drake is trying to adjust to living at Xavier's School and finds Scott Summers
to be a drip. Scott does spend a lot of social time with Jean in issue #2, so I
don't know if that means the flashbacks can or can't go soon after UXM #308 FB
following UXM #1. My notes also have Jean Grey bts in the fifth flashback of
X-Men: The Wedding Album right after UXM #308 fb.

Oh! And there's also Web of Spider-Man v2 #9 with a flashback of young Scott Summers & Professor Xavier turning down Tyler Smithson's application at Xavier's school.

Scott is wearing a bowtie & sweater-vest. Stylish!

Am I overlooking it, or did the "X-Men vs. Hulk" one-shot from late 2008/early 2009 not make it into the Index?
