Captain America: Patriot 1-4

Post by Leoparis »

Apparently the writer starts Patriot's career in July 41, the cover date when his feature started in Marvel Mystery Comics #21. The writer wanted to take advantage of the July 41 and July 46 dates in the character's history (start and end of his feature in Marvel Mystery Comics). Except that the Patriot started in Human Torch #4 Spring 41, i.e. six months before the month of July (a comic sporting Spring 41 would have been in the stands 2 or three months before, i.e. Winter 1940). In other words, while Patriot started at the same time as Captain America, he now debuts later. Although we could conceive that the narration on pages 1-3 is a flashback and refers to a much earlier meeting.

July 1941: pp 1-3 Jeff Mace meets Captain America
pp 4-8 Mace's editor, Goodman, tells him to not get involved in his stories. Mary suggests a new costumed character to Jeff to stop strike-breakers.
Cast: Captain America, Jeff Mace, Mary Morgan (next in Human Torch Comics 5a), Jack Casey.
The strike angle is also present in his origin appearance, in Human Torch Comics #4

p 9 Early career and headlines:
Aug 41: Patriot ("Tank Factory" is a reference to Marvel Mystery Comics #22 Aug 41 "Tank Production Menaced")
Sep 41: Patriot, Mary, Casey, reference to Swastika over Europe in Marvel Mystery Comics #23 Sep 41

Nov 41: Patriot, Mary, Casey, reference to Marvel Mystery Comics #28 Feb 42
p10: 8 Dec 41: Jeff Mace, Mary, Casey listen about Pearl Harbor
p 11 Jan 42: Jack Casey has enrolled into the navy
p 12 Feb 42 Mary, Patriot; April 42 Mary, Patriot; May 42 Mary, Patriot

p 12 June 42 and beyond: Liberty Legion [Thin Man, Red Raven, Miss America, Patriot, Jack Frost, Blue Diamond, Whizzer]
Many headlines which are possible references to Liberty Legion's members individual or group adventures:
"Thin Man Big Man on Campus"
"Red Skull routed with help of home front heroes" refers to Invaders #5-6 Marvel Premiere #29-30
"Jack Frost Nips at Nip's Nose"
"Miss America at ballpark"
"Legion Licks Lady Luftwaffe"
"Legion foils Fuhrer's face on Rushmore"
p13 Liberty Legion "Assassin Nation" Thin Man Takes Bullet for FDR

pp14-15 Dec 43 Patriot, Mary as Miss Patriot, direct reference to Marvel Mystery Comics #50 Dec 43 "Introducing Miss Patriot"

pp16-17 April 1945 Patriot, Miss America, Blue Diamond, Thin Man, Whizzer, Ms. America, Jack Frost, Princess Volcana of the Lava Men (maybe first chronological appearance for the Lava Men). Liberty Legion disbands and Patriot is assigned to the northeast US (but is in Europe in The Twelve: Spearhead and Captain America Annual 13)

pp18-23 Jul 46 Jeff Mace, Agent Skinner. Mace recounts the preceding events to two agents who ask him to continue as Captain America.
This recounts (in a debriefing flashback) the events from WI? 4 (1-30), CA 215-FB, WI? 4 (31-34) which occur just after the end of Patriot's feature in Marvel Mystery Comics #74 Jul 46. The debriefing occurs after the story told in flashback and probably before Captain America Comics 59.

#2
Sept 46 pp1-2 Miss Patriot.
pp3-8 panels 1-2 In England the All-Winners Squad [Captain America, Bucky, Human Torch, Toro, Sub-Mariner, Whizzer, Miss America] fights Red Guardian, Iron Comrade, Night Witch, Proletariat, Sunbird who try to rescue Klaus Fuchs.
panels 3-4 Miss Patriot recognizes Patriot's voice when she hears Captain America on the radio.
pp 9-15:1-3 That evening: Times Square: Betsy Ross is assigned as liaison to Captain America. Miss Patriot congratulates Jeff but gets angry at her when she hints she might replace Bucky. She walks away before she could tell her of Jack Casey's death. Betsy, Whizzer and Human Torch tell him. He wants to go to his burial as Cap but they try to dissuade him because of Casey's dishonorable discharge.
pp 15:4-16 Jeff goes as Patriot to the funeral where he joins Mary and gives a speech.
pp 17-18 Captain America, Miss America, Bucky, Human Torch, Betsy Ross learn Patriot is blackballed.
p 19 panel 1 Feb 47 Captain America, Bucky, Protector.
panel 2 Aug 47 All-Winners Squad [Captain America, Miss America, Sub-Mariner], "Little Green Men"
panel 3 Dec 47 Captain America, Bucky, Dr. Satan.
panel 4-page 21 Apr 48 All-Winners Squad [Captain America, Bucky, Human Torch, Toro, Sub-Mariner, Whizzer, Miss America] and Betsy Ross meet on the Baxter Building, their new HQ, where they celebrate Jeff's birthday. Mary Morgan overhears.
pp 22-23 That night. While they are on patrol Bucky is shot by Lavender = Captain America Comics 66

#3
April 1948 pp 1-3 Captain America, Betsy Ross, Namor, Whizzer, Miss America, Human Torch.
pp 4-8 Cap visits Mary Morgan; she leaves town.
pp 9-17 Cap confronts Lavender with help from Golden Girl.
pp 18 Cap informs Bucky he has a new partner.
pp 19-20 Namor, Human Torch, Toro, Whizzer, Miss America congratulate Cap who informs them he's leaving the team.
pp 21-23 Jeff walks with Betsy to her home where agent Skinner is waiting for her.

This story is concurrent with Captain America Comics 66 and follows it.

#4
p1 June 30, 1950 Skinner interrogates Jeff Mace
p2-7 4 months earlier Cap, Golden Girl tell their love to each other but Ross is reassigned
p8-9 Fred Davis and Agent Skinner meet Mace.
p10-15 Mace investigates a boy's disappearance and steps onto project Vanguard.
p16-19 (June 30, 1950) Davis joins Skinner as he interrogates Mace. Mace evades the trap set by Skinner to send him to Korea and dictates his conditions.
p20 Mace proposes to Ross.
p21 They settle in Glendale where Betsy's nephew Thaddeus Ross visits and plays with Franklin Storm.
p22-24 16 Dec 53 Jeff and Betsy talk about the new Captain America.

The other two members of Red Guardian's team are Proletariat (his "Bucky") and Sunbird, per the series' writer, and revealed in Red Guardian's A-Z Update #4 handbook entry a couple of months back.

And you might want to add to the chronologies (info not already there bolded)

CA@ 13-FB
N@ 1/3
CA:P 2

and Klaus Fuchs has also turned up previously, though we never saw him - he was mentioned in CA @13 as the spy who discovered the Red Skull was holding Hitler's strongbox.

For the parts that are concurrent with Captain America Comics #66... don't they contradict it (and supersede it)? I don't have them in front of me right now, but I think they play out very differently. For instance, I think Cap reveals his identity to Betty Ross in #66, while in Patriot, she's known it from the start.

Well, in all the post-war Captain America Comics, it was still Steve Rogers and the original Bucky. The policy used to be that Golden Age stories are integrated in the continuity when they're referenced in a post FF #1 issue. So CA 66 is the Marvel Comic version or whatever. Englehart and Thomas have superseded all the post-war Cap stories already. I'm just playing the game of trying to figure a chronology for these post-war stories since Kesel is referencing a number of them.

Regarding Jack Casey; as I recall, in Human Torch Comics#3, they introduced a journalist associate of the Human Torch called Casey. Later in the Handbooks and elsewhere, they have taken to identifying him with Jack Casey, the photographer in prose stories by George Harmon Coxe, as well as an Atlas series. As I recall, one of the Handbooks even refers to him as "Flash Gun" or "Flashgun" Casey, the nickname from George Harmon Coxe's stories.

I doubt that "Flashgun" Casey has fallen into the public domain.
