End of the golden age?
The start of the Golden Age of Marvel Comics is generally considered to be the first appearance of Namor the Sub-Mariner in 1939. There does not seem to be a general concensus as to when the Golden Age ended, but for my purposes I will place it during the final appearance of a "super hero" during the 1940s or 1950s. Does anyone know of the last time a costumed "super hero" (ie. not a romance comic, horror, humor, mystery, etc.) appeared prior to Fantastic Four #1 (1961)? Or has there ever been another earlier period between the late 1940s and 1961 when there was a period when no "super heroes" appeared?

Re: End of the golden age?
For Marvel, the end of the Golden Age is often pegged to when Captain America Comics became the non-superhero horror series Captain America's Weird Tales. Cap and the Red Skull appeared in the lead story of CAWT 74 (1949), and AFAIK no superhero characters (not even Cap) appeared in CAWT 75 (1950). Issue #76, which came out several years later during the brief mid-50s superhero revival, reverted the title back to Captain America Comics.
