Ultimate Power #1-9

Post by Col_Fury »

ULTIMATE POWER #1 (December, 2006)
By Brian Michael Bendis & Greg Land

APPEARANCES:
Ultimate universe: Fantastic Four: Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, Thing; Serpent Squad: Anaconda, Asp, Black Mamba (Janis), Death Adder, Princess Python; Capt. Carol Danvers, Gen. Nick Fury, SHIELD agent Wendell Vaughn
Supreme Power universe: Squadron Supreme: Amphibian, Arcanna, Blur, Dr. Spectrum, Hyperion, Inertia, Nighthawk, Nuke, Power Princess, Shape, Tom Thumb

FLASHBACK:
Reed promises to cure Ben.
SYNOPSIS:
The Serpent Squad attacks Project PEGASUS searching for their lost Serpent Crown. The Fantastic Four defeat them, but everyone is concerned when one of Thing’s rocks chips off. Mr. Fantastic promises again to cure Thing. Later, Mr. Fantastic proposes to SHIELD that he can sends probes into other universes to search for new energy sources; Nick Fury accuses Mr. Fantastic of only wanting to send the probes out to find a cure for Thing and denies the request. Later, Mr. Fantastic sends probes into other universes, anyway. Later, the Squadron Supreme arrives in the Baxter Building, and attacks.

NOTE:
This Serpent Squad is all-female and Black Mamba’s real name is given as “Janis.”

I’m assuming the flashback is a repeat from somewhere in Ultimate Fantastic Four.

ULTIMATE POWER #2 (January, 2007)
By Brian Michael Bendis & Greg Land

APPEARANCES:
Ultimate universe: Fantastic Four: Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, Thing; Ultimates: Ant-Man, Captain America, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Wasp; X-Men: Cyclops, Iceman, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Kitty Pryde; Spider-Man, Gen. Nick Fury

NOTE:
For some reason, the Squadron Supreme can’t talk for most of the issue. They blame it on the effects of dimensional travel or somesuch, but it doesn’t happen again when they travel back in a later issue, or when other characters travel between universes, and it’s never fully explained.

Kitty Pryde is trying to decide what her codename should be and suggests Shadowcat, the Cat and the Shroud.

ULTIMATE POWER #9 (February, 2008)
By Jeph Loeb & Greg Land

APPEARANCES:
Ultimate universe: Fantastic Four: Human Torch, Invisible Woman, Mr. Fantastic, Thing; Ultimates: Captain America, Iron Man, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Thor, Wasp; X-Men: Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Kitty Pryde; Spider-Man, Hulk, Capt. Carol Danvers (bts, being promoted to replace Fury in SHIELD), Gen. Nick Fury, Dr. Franklin Storm (bts, repairing Baxter Building)
Supreme Power universe: Squadron Supreme: Amphibian, Arcanna, Blur, Dr. Spectrum, Hyperion, Nighthawk, Power Princess, Tom Thumb; Dr. Emil Burbank
Squadron Supreme universe: Amphibian, Arcanna, Dr. Spectrum, Hyperion, Nighthawk, Power Princess, Shape, Skymax, Whizzer

SYNOPSIS:
Thing defeats Hulk with Invisible Woman’s help. Scarlet Witch sends the original Squadron Supreme back to their universe. Spider-Man tells the Supreme Power heroes that Nick Fury and Dr. Doom altered Mr. Fantastic’s probe, and Mr. Fantastic reveals that Dr. Burbank created the bacteria and framed him for it. Fury and Burbank are arrested and Power Princess says she’s travelling to the Ultimate universe… for some reason. Later, Thing tells Mr. Fantastic that his missing rock chip grew back, so this whole mess was for nothing.

NOTE:
Ultimate Power was published after the Squadron Supreme’s appearances in the Exiles series, so that makes it fairly easy to place. Since this is Linda Lewis as Skylark and not Lady Lark, that means this has to be at least after the Squadron’s appearances in Quasar, which is after Nigthhawk (Kyle) died. That (plus publication order) means this is the second Nighthawk (Neal) and not the first (Kyle), because Kyle died before those Quasar issues. The odd thing is, it’s Nighthawk (Neal) who recognizes Captain America (mistaking Ultimate Cap for 616 Cap). But maybe that’s why he made the mistake?

Ultimate Power #1-9 was published the same months as Ultimate Fantastic Four #35-49, Ultimate Spider-Man #101-118, Ultimate X-Men #75-89 and between Ultimates 2 #13 and Ultimates 3 #1. None of these are in the MCP yet, but hey, future reference and all that.

NOTE:
Next issue confirms that this new Squadron are the originals. When they arrive this issue they say their world has been destroyed, but this is never followed up on. Who knows what they were talking about.
The 712 Squadron Supreme mention that they are effectively lip-synched to their Supreme Power counterparts, repeating what they are saying word for word. 712 Dr. Spectrum says "the probe which destroyed our world came from here" - but they are in the SP universe, and the probes didn't come from there, they came from Ultimate/1610. They talk like they've deliberately travelled to SP looking for the culprit, but later it's revealed they were dragged there by Scarlet Witch's magic - they weren't trying to go anywhere. And they also note that being brought to SP by SW has resulted in them finding it hard to have an independent thought. As such, when the handbooks were working on the last Squadron Supreme entry we suspected that their world wasn't damaged by a probe, they were just saying it and acting like it because they had the SP team's thoughts and memories messing with their own own. Supporting this, the 712 guys showed no inclination of hanging round to get redemption against whoever did the theoretical damage to 712 once they got their independence back.

Right. On top of that, the probe didn't do anything to the Supreme Power Earth, Dr. Burbank (under Gen. Alexander's orders) created the giant bacteria and blamed it on the probe in an attempt to kill Hyperion. There's no reason for Dr. Burbank to send the bacteria to a universe he has no means of getting to and no way of knowing existed in the first place. (Arcanna's the one who took them to the Ultimate Earth, and she didn't know what Burbank and Gen. Alexander were up to)

So yeah, I agree with the handbooks suspicion that the Squadron Supreme Earth is just fine.
