Tales of the Marvels: Wonder Years #1-2

TALES OF THE MARVELS: WONDER YEARS #1 (August 1995)
By Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning & Igor Kordey

APPEARANCES:
Black Widow, Red Ronin (in fb), Scarlet Witch, Vision, Wonder Man (also in fb), Ginger Beach, Elaine Bosco, Cindy Knutz (also in fb), Neal Saroyan (bts), Bernadette Sedaka, Renaldo

FLASHBACKS:
College girl Cindy Knutz is walked home by her creepy tutor until Red Ronin almost steps on them. Her tutor runs off and Wonder Man saves Cindy. After the battle ends, Cindy finds Wonder Man passed out in a parking lot. She wakes him up and he leaves, but he forgot his sunglasses and now she’s infatuated with him. Later, she decides to move to Los Angeles to be closer to Wonder Man.
SYNOPSIS:
In Los Angeles for three months, Cindy Knutz joins the Wonder Man Fan Club. Later she works at her job at Star Signs, is jealous of Ginger Beach (Wonder Man’s girlfriend) and tries to work up the courage to say hello to Wonder Man. Later still, Cindy and her friend Bernadette are excited that Wonder Man is going to meet with their fan club but are heartbroken when they hear on the news that the West Coast Avengers have disbanded. Two days later, they sneak onto the Palos Verdes compound hoping to find some memorabilia. They’re surprised to see Vision, Black Widow, Scarlet Witch and Wonder Man arrive and they’re knocked out when Kree soldiers attack. Later in her apartment, Cindy listens to the news reporting that Wonder Man has died.

NOTE:
The Red Ronin scene is an expansion of A 198, and the Palos Verde/Kree attack is an expansion of FW 1. The Ginger Beach/working up courage to talk to Wonder Man scene is new (not an expansion of anything).

Bob Lefler is Cindy’s creepy tutor. He currently has a MCP listing, but this is his only appearance and I doubt he’ll ever appear again.

Renaldo is Cindy’s boss at Star Signs, but I can’t find a listing for him anywhere, or a surname.

Who’s Earl Cowan? He’s listed as appearing in this issue (his only appearance in the MCP) but I can’t find him anywhere. The only other named character in this issue I can find is Cindy’s dad, Eddie Knutz.

TALES OF THE MARVELS: WONDER YEARS #2 (September 1995)
By Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning & Igor Kordey

APPEARANCES:
Beast (also in fb), Black Widow, Captain America, Crystal, Cyclops, Falcon, Hercules, Hulk, Iron Man, Living Lightning, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch (also in fb), Spider-Man, Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter), Thing, Thor, Thunderstrike, USAgent, Vision, Wasp, Wonder Man (bts in fb), Ginger Beach (also in fb), Elaine Bosco (also in fb), Amanda Chaney, Nick Fury, Agatha Harkness, Edwin Jarvis, Cindy Knutz, David Letterman (op in fb), Neal Saroyan, Bernadette Sedaka, Waylon Wilkie (in fb)

FLASHBACK:
Various people give interviews about Wonder Man’s death. Also, Wonder Man’s ion cloud disperses (seen on the news).
SYNOPSIS:
Cindy ignores phone calls from her friend Bernadette, daydreams about Wonder Man and attends Wonder Man Fan Club meetings, all while refusing to believe that Wonder Man is actually dead. Shortly afterwards, Cindy visits Bernadette and finds she’s not taking Wonder Man’s death very well; Bernadette’s apartment is a mess, she’s not cleaning herself and she’s making vague references to suicide. Cindy tells her they’ve been invited to Wonder Man’s funeral (as representatives of the fan club), tries to cheer her up by telling her Wonder Man will return at his own funeral and makes plans to meet her there. A few days later at the funeral, Cindy notices that Bernadette didn’t show up. She leaves the funeral and rushes to Bernadette’s place and finds her dying from an overdose. Later, Bernadette wakes up in the hospital and is greeted by Cindy. Later, Cindy visits Wonder Man’s grave and returns his sunglasses, finally accepting that he’s really dead.

NOTE:
It’s nice to see that Wonder Man got a funeral. Iron Man tells Cindy that Wonder Man loved his fan club and Nick Fury keeps Cindy company at the funeral (until she runs off, that is).

Since Cyclops is present at the funeral, this has to happen after he returns from the future in X 35.

Waylon Wilkie was an actor and played “Uncle Elmer” alongside Simon Williams’ “Mr. Muscles.”

Beast appears on David Letterman’s show, talking about Wonder Man’s death.

Cowan is Red Ronin's pilot as seen in A 197-199 (all of which he also appeared in).

Awesome! :D

It looks like Waylon's appearance in Avengers #194 is on TV, alongside Simon. In Avengers #201, they're filming the show (the last espisode, actually). So, Avengers #194 is a flashback appearance:

WILKE, WAYLON
*A 194-FB
*A 201
TM:WY 2-FB

Where should this flashback go for Simon?

WONDER MAN/SIMON WILLIAMS

A 189
M/PRM 55
*<here, maybe?>
A 192
A 193
ALIAS 26-FB
A 194

Hey Col. Fury,
Wasn't the first time Jean and Scott were reunited with any X-Men after they return from the future during the Phalanx Covenant cross-over?
Shouldn't Cyclops and Beast appear here after that? (It's been many of years, I could be wrong)

Oh, Daron, just for completeness on Cowan's chronology, Cowan's first chronological appearance was a flashback in A 198, per both the Appendix and the Avengers Index. Thus...

COWAN, DR. EARL
A 198-FB <--add
{A 197} <--add first-published-appearance brackets
A 198 (1-10)

Well, Cyclops gives the X-Men a phone call in Uncanny #316 and they return to being full time X-Men during the Phalanx Covenant crossover, but placing this appearance after that crossover would push Wonder Man's funeral to over five months (publication time) after his death. I'd like to avoid that if possible.

I don't see anything preventing Cyclops going to Wonder Man's funeral after his return from the future and before he rejoins the X-Men. It's not like they're on an adventure; Cyclops is there as emotional support for Beast.

Good question, Jason. Thanks!
