Iron Man Legacy #6-11

IRON MAN LEGACY #6 (November 2010)
By Fred Van Lente & Steve Kurth

APPEARANCES:
Tony Stark (also in fb), Obadiah Stane (in fb), Dr. Strange, Wong, Mr. Fantastic, Namor, Black Bolt, Professor X, Lilandra (bts, Xavier left her asleep in bed), Hangman, Tiboro (bts), Geoffrey Wilder, Stacey Yorkes, Leslie Dean, Victor Stein, Gene Hayes, Tina Minoru

FLASHBACK:
Tony Stark chats with Obadiah Stane and gets a set of golf clubs from his old office.
SYNOPSIS:
Dr. Strange returns home after defeating Tiboro to find the Illuminati waiting for him. They discuss Tony Stark’s current situation (his alcoholism, losing his company and possibly being homeless) but decide not to do anything to help him, because he has to help himself to be of any use to them. Meanwhile on the West coast, Tony meets a crazy homeless person. Later, Tony notices the Hangman trying to kill the crazy homeless person he just met. Tony gets a suit of Iron Man armor out of the golf clubs he’ hauling around and defeats Hangman. He learns the crazy guy’s name (Tyree Robinson) and address and brings him home where Tony meets Tyree’s sister Tamara, who tells Tony that Tyree is an engineer who has a hard time taking his medication. Tony leaves and comes across two guys trying to steal his golf clubs; they taser him and run off. Tony puts on his chest plate to restart his artificial heart and passes out. The two guys report to the Pride that both Iron Man and Tony Stark are in town. The Pride kill the two guys.

NOTE:
Lilandra was off in space with the Starjammers at the time this story is set, and yet Xavier says he left her in bed to attend this Illuminati meeting. He could have been visiting her.

Namor mentions through this arc that he’s King of Atlantis. Since this story is set before the Sub-Mariner mini, that’s fine.

IRON MAN LEGACY #7 (December 2010)
By Fred Van Lente & Steve Kurth

APPEARANCES:
Tony Stark (also in fb), Hangman, Sidewinder, Cobra, Puff Adder, Diamondback, Anaconda, Rattler, Alex Wilder, Geoffrey Wilder, Catherine Wilder, Janet Stein, Alice Hayes

FLASHBACK:
Tamara finds Tony unconscious outside and brings him inside where Tyree plugs Tony into the wall for his chest plate to work.
SYNOPSIS:
The Pride interrogate the Hangman in jail, then command him to hang himself. Meanwhile, Tony wakes up and is amazed at how much medication Tyree has to take. Tony gets an idea for how he can get his fortune back. Elsewhere, the Pride hire the Serpent Society to kill Tony Stark. Tony goes to the junk yard to get parts for his prototype and the Serpent Society attack him.

NOTE:
Puff Adder is a member of the Serpent Society, but this is set before the Serpent Society’s first appearance. Puff Adder wouldn’t join for a few more years. The Cap Index places these Legacy issues for the Society members, so this must have been a dry run for the Society and Puff adder just didn’t stay with the group for whatever reason. There was a Serpent Squad before this (seen in at least IM 160), of course.

IRON MAN LEGACY #8 (January 2011)
By Fred Van Lente & Steve Kurth

APPEARANCES:
Tony Stark, Iron Man (Jim Rhodes), Diamondback, Puff Adder, Sidewinder, Cobra, Anaconda, Rattler, Alex Wilder, Geoffrey Wilder, Catherine Wilder, Frank Dean, Leslie Dean, Alice Hayes, Gene Hayes, Robert Minoru, Tina Minoru, Janet Stein, Victor Stein, Dale Yorkes, Stacey Yorkes, Old Lace

SYNOPSIS:
Tony jury-rigs some weapons in the junk yard and fights off the Serpent Society. Later, the Pride are convinced that Tony Stark knows about their group and is here to destroy them. Tony tells Tamara what he’s working on: a mechanized pillbox. Tony goes to various banks dor a loan to mass-produce his new invention, but they all turn him down (under instruction from the Pride). Tony arranges for a neighborhood meeting and asks the community for the money; if everyone donates twenty dollars they can have enough, and he’ll give them all jobs once things get rolling. The meeting is interrupted when the Pride’s goons show up, but they’re driven off by Iron Man. Iron Man tells Tony they need to talk.

IRON MAN LEGACY #9 (February 2011)
By Fred Van Lente & Steve Kurth

APPEARANCES:
Tony Stark, Iron Man (Jim Rhodes), HERBIE, Mr. Fantastic, Human Torch, Invisible Girl, She-Hulk, Tim Boo Ba, Grottu, Geoffrey Wilder, Catherine Wilder, Alice Hayes, Janet Stein, Morley & Clytemnestra Erwin (both bts, thought Tony ended up in a ditch)

FLASHBACK:
Tony stark chats with Obadiah Stane (repeats IM:LEG 6-FB).
SYNOPSIS:
Tony apologizes for disappearing on Iron Man and the Erwins and laments that he can’t get any purchase orders for his new invention. Iron Man says he might be able to help with that. Later, Mr. Fantastic (via a HERBIE) gives Tony Stark a gift of a few hundred thousand dollars. Tony is denied access to an empty factory, so he just breaks in and starts using it. In Japan, Iron Man stops Tim Boo Ba and Grottu from destroying Tokyo. The neighborhood has agreed to work for Tony for free until orders start coming in. The police surround the factory, but they give him thirty hours to vacate the premises (the Pride only wanted to give thirty minutes) because they want to avoid bad PR. Later, Tyree forgot to take his medicine again and attacks his sister. He chases her out of the building and they’re captured by the Pride, who then prepare to sacrifice Tamara to the Gibborim.

NOTE:
Um, didn’t Mr. Fantastic agree in issue #6 not to help Tony? How is giving Tony half a million dollars not helping?

IRON MAN LEGACY #10 (March 2011)
By Fred Van Lente & Philippe Briones

APPEARANCES:
Tony Stark, Iron Man (Jim Rhodes), Tim Boo Ba, Grottu, Namor, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Professor X, Dr. Strange, Alex Wilder, Geoffrey Wilder, Catherine Wilder, Robert Minoru, Tina Minoru, Victor Stein, Janet Stein, Frank Dean, Leslie Dean, Dale Yorkes, Stacey Yorkes, Gene Hayes, Alice Hayes, Old Lace

SYNOPSIS:
In Tokyo, Iron Man defeats Tim Boo Ba and Grottu, then offers the citizens of Tokyo an opportunity to place orders for Tony Stark’s new invention. Meanwhile, Tony searches for Tyree and Tamara until a hologram of the Pride leader says he has them, and tells Tony to meet him without Iron Man or they’ll be killed. Tony arrives as Iron Man and is attacked by a dionosaur (Old Lace). Tony defeats the dinosaur and then battles the Pride. The Pride overpower him, but they’re interrupted when the other Illuminati members arrive.

IRON MAN LEGACY #11 (April 2011)
By Fred Van Lente & Philippe Briones

APPEARANCES:
Tony Stark (also in fb), Iron Man (Jim Rhodes), Dr. Strange, Professor X, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Namor, Alex Wilder, Geoffrey Wilder, Catherine Wilder, Dales Yorkes, Stacey Yorkes, Frank dean, Leslie Dean, Victor Stein, Janet Stein, Gene Hayes, Alice Hayes, Robert Minoru, Tina Minoru

FLASHBACK:
Tony leaves a recorded message for the Pride, explaining he’s leaving his new company and that the Pride should leave it alone as well. OR ELSE!
SYNOPSIS:
The Illuminati defeat the Pride and Tony frees Tyree and Tamara. Later, Tony tells Tamara he’s leaving and that she’s in charge of the company now, and that she’ll be rich. The next day, the Pride decide to leave the factory alone. Weeks later, Iron Man (Rhodes) checks in on Tyree, who’s stopped taking his medicine again and is homeless again. He doesn’t want to take his medicine even though he’s now super rich.

Or vice versa. In "New Mutants" #19, the Starjammers discover that Warlock and Magus are heading for the Earth and are worried about their loved ones there. Perhaps she took time to check up on her lover?

This is a bit odd. In his early appearances, Puff Adder is one of the new recruits who infiltrate the Society under the command of Viper. He does not seem particularly familiar with the teammates who he is betraying,

In "Captain America" #338, Sidewinder feels the need to explain to the prospective recruits: "My name is Sidewinder, I am the Leader of the Serpent Society". And the Adder introduces himself to the stranger, "Whatever you say, pal. The name's Puff Adder, by the way!" The assumption being that this is the first time the two meet in person.

In #341, the new recruits get the basic information on the Society, their function as a trade union, etc. Sidewinder reminds the newbies that they will be treated as rookies: "Yet it remains to be seen if you truly have what it takes to be one of us. Over your next three months of probation, you will have ample opportunities to prove yourselves!"
Col_Fury wrote:There was a Serpent Squad before this (seen in at least IM 160), of course.
Not particularly relevant. That version of the Squad was created by Roxxon and had only four members: Anaconda, Black Mamba, Death Adder, and Sidewinder. They debuted in "Marvel Two-In-One" #64-66 (June-August, 1980). Sidewinder left his teammates for dead in #65.

The supposedly dead members returned in "Iron Man" #160 (July, 1982). Then they attempted to attack Sidewinder for betraying them in "Captain America" #307-308 (July-August, 1985). He ended up recruiting them for his new organization, the Society.

#308 is treated as the first time Sidewinder sees his former teammates since their supposed deaths. They also find that he has kept files on other serpent people, realizing he was searching for recruits.
Col_Fury wrote: Later, Mr. Fantastic (via a HERBIE) gives Tony Stark a gift of a few hundred thousand dollars.
That is somewhat interesting. The original HERBIE debuted in "Fantastic Four" #209 (August, 1979) and sacrificed itself in battle in #217 (April, 1980). There were copies of him seen in "Rom" #23 (October, 1981) and "Marvel Fanfare" #15 (July, 1984), but otherwise the robot(s) would make no regular appearances until Fantastic Four vol. 3.

Sure, that could work.

As for the Serpent Society stuff, we've discussed it here before:
Illuminati & Industrial Revolution arc from Iron Man: Legacy
Illuminati (Especially Professor X) in Iron Man Legacy 6

This HERBIE really seemed like a remote control robot, not something that had its own personality. It was still nice to see the little guy, though.
