Re: Ultimate Marvel Team-Up #6-16

Post by loki »

Ultimate Man-Thing has another appearance. He's in UFF #7. When we flashback to the accident that empowered the FF and Doom, we see a panel showing all those affected...plus Man-Thing. Somehow, in a way that's not been explained (or maybe just plain forgotten with changes in writers) he's connected to their empowering. Possibly, and this is pure speculation, if UMT is like MT-616, and tied to a Nexus of Realities, then Reed's teleporter intersected with that; it might be that UMT's empowering is partially down to the Nexus (we do know it is also serum related, as in 616), and so are the FF and Doom. Given the nature of the FF's powers, linked to Western culture's four traditional elements (air, fire, water, earth), possibly Man-Thing and Doom's powers are a nod to the Chinese five elements, which drop air and instead include wood (Man-Thing) and metal (Doom).

Regardless of the reason, and the hows and whys, Man-Thing is present in that fb in some form. You might argue that it was purely symbolic, but it seemed to me that if Doom saw him in his mind, just as he saw the FF, then somehow their minds were linked briefly (Japanese and Hinduism include spirit/consciousness as a fifth element) during the teleport, making it a legit appearance.
