Spidey

Post by Clive_Reston »

If anyone else was hoping that Robbie Thompson and Nick Bradshaw's new Spidey series about high-school-era Peter Parker was going to fit into established continuity--at least as much as Untold Tales of Spider-Man or "Learning to Crawl," say--the first issue, which came out today, involves him fighting the White Rabbit. And Peter Parker hanging out with Gwen Stacy in high school. Oh well. (There's also a classmate of theirs named Sajani, who appears to be Sajani Jaffrey. Midtown High seems to be giving DeWitt Clinton a run for its money in the "significant alumni" category.)

In today's Axel in Charge column, the question was asked:
CBR wrote:This might be more of a Nick Lowe question, but "Spidey" presents a bit of a different take on the history of Spider-Man -- with, say, Gwen Stacy attending the same high school as Peter Parker. Is this meant to be outside of the mainline continuity?
And answered:
Axel Alonso wrote:Decide for yourself. We're looking to tell fun stories that will hopefully connect with new readers or inspire old fans to look at Spider-Man in a new way.

Seeing as it is a post secret wars series, you could take the view that it is part of a retconned continuity. Isn't the star Lord series contradictive to previous stories (i got this from cbr)?

Hold up. Is Marvel contending anywhere that past events have been retconned?
I can't promise you that things will improve, if we make changes;
I can promise you that they won't improve, if we don't.

Just out of curiosity. The Marvel Universe as we know it ended in Secret Wars.

Would it not be wise to make that the end point for the current MCP listings, except for the characters that escaped to Battleworld.

Do a page for the Secret Wars listings, followed by starting fresh with the current issues, that take place in the now altered Marvel Universe. It does not mean that what came before did not happen, but also take into account that somethings may be altered without our understanding.

Probably better to wait for the end of Secret Wars, just some food for thought.

Found the forum thread I was talking about...

Excerpt (http://community.comicbookresources.com ... tar-Lord-1):
'Didn't we just get a (somewhat retconned) origin story of him not too long ago?'

'This explores what happened after that. It also retcons him completely by adding in movie Yondu. This Peter Quill is like a brand new character. Sigh.'
Also, from the Spidey #1 thread (http://community.comicbookresources.com ... 8-Spidey-1):
'Is Spidey a way to show how much reality and history has changed after secret wars?'

'Again with the smartphone selfie even though smartphones were not around 13-14 years ago.' (Longer in MCP's case)'

'I get the feeling that Peter's past will be revised into a hybrid 616/1610 storyline.'
That Star-Lord thread is where I got the idea from, just thought it would be interesting to discuss here.

While DnA were apparently working on the basis that the original (pre-2000s) Star-Lord stories were canon (they mention Spartoi more than once in their run, and once brought up the Sinjin Quarrel Starlord unprompted in an interview, implying plans), Bendis... isn't. As a result, according to the Appendix, the earlier stories have been punted to "Earth-791" (see: http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix6/shakatik791.htm ).

That brings back up the old question of Jason of Spartoi's appearance in the 2000 Inhumans mini (the one drawn by Ladronn), and the flashforward to Classic Star-Lord at the end....

At any rate, everything added in this thread ("Star-Lord") and Fury's analysis of the Sinjin Quarrel Starlord mini (Archive 93, Thread 41) should probably be moved to alternate reality versions.

As you point out, all of those Star-Lord inconsistencies were introduced years ago, and has nothing to do with Secret Wars.

I’ve talked about this elsewhere but basically...we should never presume temporal/reality alterations without A LOT of clear cut evidence ala something like Crisis on Infinite Earths, Infinite Crisis, One More Day/One Moment in Time, Flashpoint/the New 52, etc. Apologies for all the DC references but this is more of a DC trick than a Marvel one so there you go.

Under the radar stuff like Spidey or the inconsistencies with Peter Quill should simply be looked at the same way we’d have looked at them sans Secret Wars or other cosmic events. Which is to say we’d simply dismiss them or attempt to reconcile them as much as possible.

Otherwise in a sense why not explain all such inconsistencies or changes as a result of the various time travel/reality warping stories occurring in the MU over the years. E.g. Gwen Stacy was very obviously not pregnant and could not have been pregnant in the Silver Age the way she was depicted in Sins Past. So is this a regular inconsistency or is it the result of the Scarlet Witch sneezing or else a by-product of when Spidey changed time in ASM #500 a dozen or so issues before hand? The answer is the former, we’ve never presumed temporal interference to explain this stuff.

Another example, why were so many people out of character during Civil War in 2006? Well, it either was regular inconsistencies...or Scarlet Witch when she recreated the MU at the end of House of M changed their personalities a bit. Meaning the Post-House of M Marvel Universe was in effect a different place to the pre-House of M universe.

You get the picture.

Secret Wars is basically House of M or Age of Apocalypse on a grander scale. Everything happened thanks to the help of the Molecule Man which basically heavily implies he simply reorganized everyone’s molecule’s to resurrect them, the same way Dr. Doom did in the first Secret Wars when he brought back Kang the Conqueror.

What I am trying to say is, without much clearer cut evidence we should neither presume all changes are the result of Secret Wars nor that in effect the Marvel Universe is not basically the same place, or a different universe. It’s the exact same universe it just got blown up and then put back together.

With Spidey, until stuff from this is clearly acknowledged in main modern continuity we should similarly just treat it as being out of continuity like Marvel Adventures and then re-evaluate when and if that bridge is crossed.
