SHADOWLINE SAGA!

Post by Col_Fury »

The Shadowline Saga books were published by Marvel’s Epic imprint, starting with Doctor Zero, then Power Line a month later, then St. George a month after that. All were bi-monthly and lasted only eight issues, cancelled due to poor sales. A Shadowline Saga: Critical Mass (a seven issue prestige format mini, originally intended to be a crossover between the three books) took everything’s place on the schedule and wrapped it all up.

About two years later, Shreck popped up in the Marvel Universe as Terror, and even got his own book (remember Terror Inc.?). D.G. Chichester (Shreck’s co-creator and Terror Inc. writer) and the handbooks confirm this is the same character and not alternate versions of each other.

More recently, alternate versions of Doctor Zero and some St. George knights appeared in the Secret Wars mini Squadron Sinister. Neat!

I haven’t read any Shadowline stuff yet, but I’m looking forward to it!

Some random stuff first:

MARVEL AGE ANNUAL #4 (4ᵗʰ story) (1988)
By Margaret Clark, D.G. Chichester & Denys Cowan

APPEARANCES:
Doctor Zero, an assassin, a dictator, Victor & Lenore (Power Line), Michael Devlin (becomes a St. George knight)

SYNOPSIS:
Doctor Zero secretly arranges for a foreign dictator to be assassinated. Afterward, he calms people down and stops rioting; the news reports that free elections will hopefully begin soon. Elsewhere, Power Line helps people trapped by a rockslide. Elsewhere, Michael Devlin is introduced to the order of St. George and puts on some armor.

NOTE:
Published the same month as Doctor Zero #3, between Power Line #2-3 and the same month as St. George #2. Doctor Zero is already a known hero and Power Line doesn’t seem to have met him yet. This seems to be the first time Devlin is a St. George knight. We’ll see how all this lines up…

TERROR INC. #13 (July 1993)
By D.G. Chichester & Richard Pace

APPEARANCES:
Shreck (in fb), a monster (in fb), a lady (in fb), others (already in MCP)

FLASHBACK (pages 18&19, panels 5-6 (of 10)):
Centuries ago, Shreck battles a monster with spikes on his face. The monster somehow gave Shreck the ability to replace his body parts with others’ (whether they’re human or animal), and the spikes ended up on his face. At some point he began wearing armor to disguise his appearance, and met a lady who fought things alongside him.

Up next (soon-ish): Doctor Zero #1-8!

ST. GEORGE #1 (June 1988)
By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark & Klaus Janson

Priest Michael Devlin feels oppressed by the church’s bureaucracy, and struggles to deal with feelings of wanting to punish evildoers. He’s approached by Father Barnabbas, who offers him a chance to be the new knight of the order of St. George, and he accepts. He’s trained by Father Abbot in Greece, but when he overhears Abbot saying Devlin’s not the right choice, he steals the knight armor and leaves to rescue his friend Tony, who’s been captured by terrorists.

NOTE:
The recent fire in Chicago is mentioned here, so this is after Doctor Zero #2, so it’s looking like M/AGE@ 4/4 has to be during Doctor Zero #2 (during page 4 of 28, between panels 1-2), instead of before it.

Devlin is introduced to the order of St. George here and puts on the armor, so M/AGE@ 4/4 happens during this issue (between pages 21-22 of 28).

Barnabbas appears here for the appointment he said he had in Power Line #3, so this is after Power Line #3. And since M/AGE@ 4/4 happens during this issue after Barnabbas meets Devlin, then M/AGE@ 4/4 has to be after Power Line #3 as well. We’ll have to ignore the damaged suits thing, and just assume they’re working on new outfits.

By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark & Klaus Janson

Knight (former Father Michael Devlin), Shreck (hey!), Dirk Ravenscore (bts), Tony Figaoro, Father Barnabbas, Doctor Zero (before he was Doctor Zero, in fb), a Knight (in fb)

NOTE:
Shreck uses Ripley’s severed hand here, so this is after Power Line #1 (where Ripley loses his hand).

ST. GEORGE #3 (October 1988)
By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark & Klaus Janson

Brother Angus, Abbot, Barnabbas, Knight (Michael Patrick Devlin, also in fb), Patty Richardson, Mike Devlin (in fb), Mary Devlin (also in fb), Lorri Nimyeur, Mr. Lenard, Mr. Skigger

He finds his home town has fallen on hard times and tries to convince a land developer to re-pen a factory instead of turning the place into a shopping mall. The developer has been influenced by Shadows, who send assassins after Michael. When he reveals he’s the new Knight of St. George, the Shadows are scared. After a fight the developer is killed.

ST. GEORGE #4 (December 1988)
By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark, Klaus Janson & John Beatty

APPEARANCES:
Shreck, Dirk Ravenscore, Knight (Michael Devlin), Mary Devlin, Patty Richardson (also in fb), Knight (Kara Janisery, in fb), townspeople, Wikka

Patty and Kara research a story in Belfast, but tensions run too high and people start shooting each other. Kara reveals she’s the Knight of St. George and gets them out of there.
SYNOPSIS:
Shreck tells Dirk Ravenscore his business is on hold with the Ravenscores until he’s had a chance to settle things with the Knight of St. George. Michael and Patty go to another town that’s supposed to be dying, but they learnt he townspeople have made a deal with Wikka (a Shadow), where they sacrifice a family every so often to him for the town’s assured prosperity.

NOTE:
Tyler Ravenscore is already dead by the time this issue starts, so this is after Power Line #2.

ST. GEORGE #5 (February 1989)
By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark & Klaus Janson

APPEARANCES:
Knight (Michael Devlin), Wikka (also in fb), townspeople (also in fb), Patty Richardson, Abbot, Gen. Retler (bts)

FLASHBACK:
The townspeople agree to sacrifice a family once a year to Wikka.
SYNOPSIS:
The Knight eventually defeats and kills Wikka. Meanwhile, Abbot contacts Gen. Retler to tell him Doctor Zero is weak after his ordeal in the arctic. Micheal decides to meet with Barnabbas in South America to find out why he was made the new Knight.

NOTE:
Doctor Zero’s arctic adventure ended in Doctor Zero #3, and Gen. Retler started going after Doctor Zero in Doctor Zero #5. So, this is sometime between Doctor Zero #3-5.

ST. GEORGE #6 (April 1989)
By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark & Klaus Janson

APPEARANCES:
Shade, Mr. Lenard, Mr. Skigger, Fachan, Shreck, Patty Richardson, Henry Clark, Adam Neushuk, Ben Welles, Knight (Michael Devlin), Skinwalker (John Nighthunter), Sharkey, Nickels

SYNOPSIS:
Shreck asks Lenard and Skigger about their encounter with the Knight. Meanwhile, Patty learns from Neushuk that Kara was last seen in Venezuela; Devlin says that can’t be a coincidence, because he was supposed to meet Barnabbas there. They hire John Nighthunter to fly them there, but are delayed by gangsters that are after Nighthunter. They make it most of the way, then start the rest of the journey on foot.

NOTE:
Skigger & Lenard are looking for a replacement for Nagas here, this is after Power Line #4.

Henry Clark appears working at the convenience store here, so this is after Doctor Zero #3.

Neushuk & Welles appear here on their way to Greece, so this is before Doctor Zero #7.

ST. GEORGE #7 (June 1989)
By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark & Dan Spiegle

APPEARANCES:
Father Carew, Shreck, Knight (Devlin, also in fb), Patty Richardson, Skinwalker (John Nighthunter), Contras (also in fb), Merchants agents (in fb), Father Abbot, Sandinistas, Barnabbas

SYNOPSIS:
As the Knight and his pals make their way to Venezuela they come across a town that he used to do missionary work in. They’ve been overrun by Contras, so the Knight beats them all up. Sandinistas arrive and attack, so the Knight beats them all up, too. They take the Sandinistas’ helicopter and continue on to Venezuela. Meanwhile, Barnabbas hears that the Knight is coming.

ST. GEORGE #8 (August 1989)
By Dwayne McDuffie, Jim Lee & Don Hudson

APPEARANCES:
Knight (Jeong Lee), Doctor Zero (also in repeat scene), Father Abbot, Barnabbas, Egri, Merkin, Toomer, Knight (Kara Janisery, also in repeat scene), Power Line (in repeat scene)

SYNOPSIS:
After an encounter with (the future) Doctor Zero, Jeong Lee retires himself as the Knight of St. George. Two years later, Shadows confront Father Abbot about (the future) Doctor Zero, saying he’s only being so public because there’s no current active Knight. Abbot tries to get Jeong out of retirement, but he refuses. Abbot recruits Kara Janisery to be the new Knight. Jeong contacts Kara and tells her that if her faith wavers, so do her Knight powers. She thinks Jeong is working with Doctor Zero, so she kills him. Kara attacks Doctor Zero, Doctor Zero defeats her (repeat from Doctor Zero #1), then looks at her corpse. Elsewhere, Abbot decides to recruit Michael Devlin.

Re: SHADOWLINE SAGA!

Post by Col_Fury »

This mini was originally intended to be regular issues of the three ongoing series, but they were altered at least a bit when they were published in this form; forward and interlude segments were added (and an epilogue in there somewhere) to bridge the issues to make them read more like one issue instead of a collection of two issues.

#1 – Doctor Zero #9 & Power Line #9
#2 – St. George #9 & Doctor Zero #10
#3 – Power Line #10 & St. George #10
#4 – Doctor Zero #11 & Power Line #11
#5 – St. George #11 & Doctor Zero #12
#6 – Power Line #12 & St. George #12
#7 – Doctor Zero #13, Power Line #13 & St. George #13

A SHADOWLINE SAGA: CRITICAL MASS #1 (January 1990)
By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark, Klaus Janson, Kevin O’Niell, Bill Sienkiewicz & Gray Morrow

APPEARANCES:
Donald Gaffney, Gen. Retler, George Bush, Dan Quayle, Dirk Ravenscore, Orb, Doctor Zero, Sheila Willis, Henry Clerk, Atropos, Father Abbot, Brother Nikos, Brother Lei-Kung, Adam Neushuk, Ben Welles, Lenard, Skigger, Skinwalker (John Nighthunter), Patty Richardson, Knight (Michael Devlin), Gordon Castle (also in fb), Lenore Castle (also in fb), Victor Guillermos (also in fb), Ripley Weaver (also in f), Shreck (in fb), Tyler Ravenscore (in fb), Eric Ravenscore (in fb), Father Barnabbas

FLASHBACK:
Gordon Castle meets with Tyler Ravenscore to talk about unifying their families, but Lenore thinks Eric is a disgusting jerk. Ripley Weaver arrives and makes a pitch for someone to be the counterbalance to Doctor Zero. A fight breaks out, Ripley loses a hand and Shreck picks it up.
SYNOPSIS:
The Merchants brief the US President and Vice President on Doctor Zero. Doctor Zero goes back to being a public hero. The Ravenscores, hearing that Henry Clerk beat Doctor Zero once, finds him at the convenience store and repairs his mind. The two reporters sneak into the order of St. George and steal some of their records. Clerk begins to work as an enforcer for the Ravenscores, replacing Shreck, but he secretly still wants to destroy the planet. In South America, Lenard and Skigger see Michael Devlin wandering around. In Venezuela, Lenore, Victor and Ripley meet with Barnabbas, then attack and slaughter the Ravenscores. They discover Lenore’s dad is still alive but Dirk Ravenscore escapes.

NOTE:
It’s been around a year since Power Line #1. Also, Gordon’s not dead, but he has spent a year nailed to the ceiling.

I only just now realized that Lenard & Skigger, when said out loud, sounds like “Lynyrd Skynyrd.”

A SHADOWLINE SAGA: CRITICAL MASS #2 (February 1990)
By D.G. Chichester, Margaret Clark, Kevin O’Niell, Kyle Baker, Mark Texiera & Mike Manley

APPEARANCES:
Henry Clerk, Shreck, Knight (Michael Devlin), Patty Richardon, Skinwalker (John Nighthunter), Ripley Weaver, Father Barnabbas, Victor Guillermos, Lenore Castle, Gordon Castle, Knight (Kara, corpse), Father Abbot, Sheila Willis, Doctor Zero (also in fb), Gen. FLASHBACK:

SYNOPSIS:
Henry Clerk travels to Washington DC and starts setting up in a nuclear facility. In Nicaragua, Shreck scavenges for body parts while he looks for the Knight of St. George. Narnabbas reveals that Kara is dead, so Patty calls the reporters and leaves them a message so they know. Meanwhile, Abbot worries about Michael Devlin. Sheila is sad that she doesn’t spend as much time with Doctor Zero as she would like, then goes back to studying dolphins. Meanwhile, Doctor Zero chills out on a beach and thinks about Sheila. Clerk meets with Gen. Retler, revealing he’s still alive. He’s welcomed back into the Merchants and begins his plans to destroy the planet by enlisting Sgt. Frederick Gramon to kill various security personnel and make it look like suicide, which Doctor Zero investigates. The Russians are blamed for “suicides” in England, so Col. Gerasimov investigates. He and Doctor Zero team up and catch Gramon killing another person. Meanwhile, the reporters read the St. George records they stole, but they’re attacked by Brother Lei-Kung, who kills one of them, Ben.

NOTE:
Since this last issue was originally intended to be three separate issues, there’s a lot of back-and-forth flashback overlapping. I’ll just deal with that in the chronologies.

Up next: chronologies!
