Re: Update

Post by Col_Fury »

We've also reorganized how we abbreviate comic titles. Since the search was also updated today, the key and the search now agree with each other again, so all the new abbreviation codes are reflected in the search.

Some examples of changes made:

She-Hulk's ongoing series' used to be abbreviated like so:

Savage She-Hulk (1980-1982) - S-H
Sensational She-Hulk (1989-1994) - S-H2
She-Hulk (2004-1005) - S-H3
She-Hulk v2 (2005-2009) - S-H4

Now, they're abbreviated like this:

Savage She-Hulk (1980-1982) - SAVSH
Sensational She-Hulk (1989-1994) - SENSH
She-Hulk (2004-1005) - SH
She-Hulk v2 (2005-2009) - SH2

Fun!

When "Spider-Man" showed up in a title, it used to be abbreviated inconsistently. Sometimes it was "SM," sometimes "S-M" and sometimes just "S." Now, it's always "SM." Amazing Spider-Man is (still) ASM, adjectiveless Spider-Man was S-M and is now SM, Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man was PPTSS and is now PPSSM (until it dropped the Peter Parker, then it switches to SSM), etc.

Inhumans used to be abbreviated INH, but with the new "Inhuman" book, that took the INH abbreviation, and now Inhumans is INHS. Similarly, Winter Soldier used to be abbreviated "WS," but with the new Wolverines book, Winter Soldier was changed to WSOL so Wolverines could take WS. Hercules used to be HERC, but with the new Herc book, Hercules was changed to HRC so Herc could use HERC. Incredible Hercules is now IHRC to accommodate the adjective and various volumes have been adjusted (similar to the She-Hulk example above).

"C" used to mean both Cable and Conan. Now, "C" just means Cable and "CO" means Conan.

There were A LOT of changes made in the abbreviations. Look over the key and screw around with the search for a bit, and you'll see what we're talking about.

A big thanks to Russ for making all the web changes (it took a while and was a lot of work!)! And of course, for hosting the MCP!

Popping out of lurkdom to say thanks so much for all the hard work!

After a quick review, it looks like this update includes everything from the "Recent Chronologies" Utopia to Siege; Siege; and about half of Siege to Fear Itself (down to Chaos War) with tentative (boxed) entries of some books/characters up to around AvX. Does that sound right?

I think I've found a part of the system which you have forgotten to change in line with your new series abbreviations - the drop down menu for issues in the search page.

For instance with the new She-Hulk series codes
Savage She-Hulk (1980-1982) - SAVSH
Sensational She-Hulk (1989-1994) - SENSH
She-Hulk (2004-2005) - SH
She-Hulk v2 (2005-2009) - SH2
the search for a comic works if you know the code and number you want.
But the new codes don't offer a drop down list of issue numbers when you just type the code.

On the other hand for the old series codes
Savage She-Hulk (1980-1982) - S-H
She-Hulk (2004-2005) - S-H3
She-Hulk v2 (2005-2009) - S-H4
the search *does* offer a drop down box with possible issue numbers,
but then obviously can't find the defined issues.

Strangely
Sensational She-Hulk (1989-1994) - S-H2
*doesn't* offer a drop down box, but this may have been a problem with the old version.

Unchanged codes like WCA still successfully offer a drop down list and the options locate the correct issues.

It works for me. Those codes are stored in your browser's cache. Go to the Search page and do a hard refresh of your browser (i.e., Ctrl-F5 in Internet Explorer). Then try the search.

I can promise you that they won't improve, if we don't.

I don't think it's the browser in this case. It's the browser that suggests things in the character search box, but it can only suggest things I've searched for before. But the spiel about 'go to comic functionality' suggests that the page will do its own auto-completion stuff for that. It will list all issues for a comic whether I've looked at them before or not. (With a caveat about how many issues it can cope with.)

And that's what I find has stopped working properly in the way I described.

The thread 'Development of the Search Feature' by jimmyppi suggested that this auto-completion would only work on Firefox browser and not Internet Explorer. (To do with differences in javascript.) But I find it also works on Chrome. I don't have Internet Explorer to check that.

It works fine with Firefox and Internet Explorer. I can't speak for Chrome.

Your joint insistences that the issue lookup *should* work properly made me look up possible solutions and decide which one should do the job with minimal side effects.

Doing a hard refresh of the browser to empty the cache is widely recommended, but it seems like overkill. And more importantly I found conflicting statements as to whether Ctrl-f5 was the right command for Firefox on Linux. And that it didn't always solve problems because it doesn't *really* empty the cache (I think).

I found a Refresh Firefox option but this seems to reset everything *but* the cache. It specifically says it doesn't delete the stuff used in the drop down prompt lists.

I switched off Search And Form History. This stopped the character search from prompting me with possibilities. But the comic search still listed all the issues of a title.
This confirmed that it wasn't the browser's Form History that was supplying the issue numbers. It was jimmyppi's javascript in the webpage.

I know that the browser just loads frequently/recently used web pages from the cache. But there are only a few pages that I have to refresh in order to get changes since the last time I went there. Most pages I don't have to refresh, either because there's (usually) nothing new to see or because they've been written to auto-refresh on load.

I had without thinking assumed that the MCP search page was in the 1st of those 2 categories - it was fixed data, including the javascript that looks up the issues.
But my subconscious prompted me to try, and a simple page refresh made everything work! Presumably by loading a new version of the javascript, along with everything else on the page.

This leads me to 1 of 3 conclusions.
1) The javascript has all the titles and issue numbers embedded in it.
2) The javascript locates the data on your website, but your new data is in a different file from the old data (a wise move when implementing a large change) and I needed a new copy of the javascript to find it.
3) Something else I haven't thought of.

I 1) is correct then I'll have to refresh the page whenever you make any additions to the issues in the database.

I recommended a hard refresh because a simple refresh works in some browsers, but not all. Without knowing the specifics of your browser, the hard refresh was the simpler solution to suggest. I'm glad to hear that a soft-refresh was sufficient for you.

I noticed that Fred Hembeck's Petey stories have been removed from 616 character chronologies and placed within new "Hembeck Universe" character chronologies. The Petey stories were confirmed as 616 in the Thor index.

How so?

M/TALES 252/2 is referenced in the "Thor's pre-JIM #83 chronology" sidebar at the start of the book.

I apologize in advance for the seeming nebulousness of our reasoning, but for the time being, I can only tell you that we remain confident in the decision to split the Hembeck stories off into their own universe.

As for the Thor Index, our long-standing policy is that reference books published by Marvel (the Index, the Handbook, the various "Saga's") are what we call "secondary sources":

They are absolutely right...unless they're wrong. These books are written by humans, and as such, mistakes can creep in. And even in cases where there is no mistake, perceptions (hell, even facts) can change, after the reference books are published. We therefore likewise remain confident that if we should ever be granted the opportunity to produce future editions of the Thor Index, they will not reference the Hembeck stories.
I can't promise you that things will improve, if we make changes;
